Ugh, I'm gonna have to believe that they purposely threw actual HIPAA laws out the window for the sake of TV drama. 1:41 - Being a spouse does not automatically waive the medical privacy of the other spouse. Same with parents and their adult children and vice versa. On the other hand, all the husband had to do was say "it's ok" and the medical staff would be released from that obligation (at least, for that moment). That permission may be entered into the patient's chart for the protection of the staff. 2:34 - I think Dr. Masters was going to say "depends on whether the info you give is considered medical in nature or if it's considered personally identifiable information or some other category of HIPAA protected information." Umm...I can't say for sure if his true job would fall under the protected info umbrella...but if it did then there would be no need to get promises from the Dr.s.
