You'd be surprised. There are ways to make sure that structures won't fail, even to very low likelihoods. Essentially, you can add factors of safety to absolutely everything until your computed probability of failure is as low as you want it to be, and it works, because contrary to popular belief, mankind knows physics pretty well.

Very well. They're not subject to guessing and being victim to illusions. They know that some of the funny structures they build are much more likely to remain standing than the building you are currently sitting in, lol. They know how the world around them is constructed, they know the tolerances and limits, YOU do not, lol. Everyone has seen shopping malls that look solid just collapse in on themselves and yet there are ancient bridges that are the original 'gravity defying' structures still stand today. Puts things in context when you think about it properly, doesn't it?!?!?

OCUBOX It’s hardly even much of a building tbh - 1.6 billion for a tower holding a roof and some offices - I imagine that something much, much bigger or more practical could be built and designed for that cost

The Montréal Olympic Stadium is absolutely impressive to see in real life. It really is one of the greatest modern building I've seen.

I love this channel. I just wish the US would switch over to the metric system for our units of measurement.
Why did you think it necessary to bring up this canard on this video? They actually quoted distances in meters. You want to use metric? You got your wish, so shut up already. It's a free country and I for one, don't appreciate you trying to force your preferences down other people's throats.
@@alanrhyason calling it archaic is really stupid because sure it was made using old practices, but it is just a different kind of measurement, that's all. It's not innacurate, or archaic and nonfunctional, its just a different form of measurement. I personally would like the switch but, it really is impractical and would take a while
I don't really know why we don't change? I believe most Americans know both. I learned the metric system around age ten in a small rural community school, So I can't imagine it not being applied in larger city schools,and this was back in the mid 70's
Anyway this channel uses the metric system...so I'm just wondering; is the fact that America still uses the imperial measuring system something that bothers you often? An while you're upset about America not using the metric system; don't forget Liberia,and Myanmar also do not use it. So now you have three reason to be annoyed all the time... Oh Snap! I bet you get aggravated when someone writes out the word of a number instead of just writing the number itself. 🤣

Arbaaz Patwari the uk still has all of the road signs in imperial, but everyone also knows metric, and that’s what’s taught at school. Using both is not difficult, in only 20-30 years most people have become accustomed to both.

This was very interesting. It looks so weird to see the futuristic green skyscrapers rise next to low residential districts. Hope the future goes later also in smaller low residential zones and not only in skyscrapers. Cool video :)

I remember being at Montreal olympic stadium observatory with my dad, what a view there was! I personally always enjoyed seeing it each time it was in my eyesight.

Have seen the cantilevered building in Beijing 3 times over the past decade. It never gets old or comfortable and simply appears like it's going to collapse at any moment. Such a gutsy engineering project!!! The comment about erecting steel members in the morning is of particular brilliance. Good thing I'm not an engineer wouldn't have ever thought of that.
I'd like to see more reviews about technology beyond sky gardens & indoor waterfall

I recommend you look at The House on the Rock. It defies all of these structures, and is very impressive. I have walked out on it myself.

You should have done the Guthrie theaters “never ending bridge”. It is two floors and extends 178 Feet out giving great views of the Mississippi River and the city of Minneapolis from its observation deck. It is a must see if you visit the city Minneapolis MN.

I spent some of my early years in Beijing and I remember going past the cmg headquarters while it's under construction every once in a while and seeing the progress. The locals nicknamed something similar to the 'big trousers'. Lol brings back memories... And now I live in Sydney... I go past the one central park building every once in a while too. They are truly amazing structures tho.

I attended an event in Montreal which utilized the aging plaza surrounding the stadium and tower over 7 days in August 2017. The imposing tower must've reopened the following year after renovations as it wasn't open at the time.
What I can say about it is that it creates a highly visible and distinctive landmark on that side of the island. Depending on one's location, it may be possible to orient oneself in relation to the Montreal Tower, Mount Royal itself, the commercial high-rises and skyscrapers of downtown, or St. Joseph's Oratory, roughly on the opposite side of the mountain from the Olympic Stadium.
Why this only has 545K subscribers is beyond me.

Hi from Montreal! the main feature the tower was supposed to provide - retracting the roof of the olympic stadium - has *never* worked. as others have pointed out, the project went massively overbudget. the city didn't finish paying off the debt they owed on it until 2006 - *30 years* after the games. during this period the city had significant financial problems and there was rampant corruption, especially in the construction sector (it's still there). the stadium itself has been largely unused since then, as both sports franchises that played there regularly went bust and/or left town. one of them (the canadian football team called the Alouettes) came back in the late 90's, but has only ever used the olympic stadium for a handful of playoff games.
Im pretty sure my secondary school geography teacher now shows his students this channel on an almost daily basis.
