Made all the worse cuz it was merely one moment of hesitation that allowed Shirou to get the jump on him. And worse still since the reason Gil hesitated at all is because his pride prevented him from going all out in the first place.
The hesitation only happened in the anime. It was a way to demonstrate how prideful gil really is, thus gil did not lose because he hesitated, he lose because he his pride would not allow him to use EA against someone as weak as Shirou. Once he try to grab EA Shirou won because it shows that he needed his strongest weapon to kill Shirou of all people.

@@BloodyMaryV In the original novel, Once he realized Gil realized he was losing, *he didn't hesitate to pull out Ea at all.* During the fight, Shirou knew ahead of time Gilgamesh's Ace in the hole and was waiting for the moment where he could shut it down and claim victory. In the novel, this scene shows off Shirou's strategy in battle prowess. In the anime his victory is because Gilgamesh got cocky. And while that is a total Gilgamesh way to go out, it underminds Shirou's victory. It's something minor that I wish was illustrated in the anime proper

Tsukishima Kei him using Ea would be him admitting that he needs to use his most powerful weapon against someone he considers a worm, that's why he said that Shirou was the winner after this fight even though Shirou was about to be killed before grail ex machina. In the VN however, Shirou was about to kill Gilgamesh but the grail interrupted that.
From all fate Stay night series, this battle give me the most goosebump out of them all. Not even Rider Vs Alter Saber can beat this one (except for animation).

This scene actually has some pretty deep hidden lore. See that red and black sword Gilgamesh was about to use on Shirou? That's Ea. An Anti-World level noble phantasm that can pretty much blow up anything in its way. But that's not it's ultimate strength; Ea actually stands for EA, Electronic Arts. The company famed for abusing its player base in order to extort as much money as they can, way more than is normally really needed for producing their games and turning profit. So why would EA try to exploit people for such an absurd amount of money? Simple, to fund this very moment.

I do love…that the main flaw of Ea, the sword that can literally scour the earth down to the bedrock at the least generous interpretation of its power…is that it’s like, actually a weapon that has to be held and swung. In a fight decided by who was better at pulling weapons out of thin air and using them as missiles, it was the one weapon that couldn’t be used that way that was just an instant too slow. Whether from pride making him hesitate here or Shirou seeing it coming in the VN, for all it’s power, Ea was the exact wrong weapon to use just then.
@@RomulusQuironius The thing is that using EAa is something that Gilgamesh dislikes as a King. For him be king is never face someone as equal. He lose in his own terms, never treat Shiriou as equal until he was able to land a real hit.
Ea is the best weapon in this case scenario for Gil. Ea is a weapon well suited to nuke entire reality marbles like Iskandar’s NP. It’s just that in this route (all routes actually) he is extremely arrogant than usual and is losing his composure. FSF showed us that he is indeed arrogant but he is not naive and stupid like in this interpretation. Shirou like he himself stated was just 1 step ahead compared to Gil who had every cards in his arsenal to stop shirou from eliminating the variables. It was simply too late to use Ea but if he had done sooner, its a guaranteed wrap unless Shirou has Avalon (basically plot armor)
I love the sound design of this scene, each time a noble phantasm impacts one of Shirou's swords or they crash to the ground or they explode, it's a tremendous sound, as if cannons were shooting, like it's a warzone. Because I imagine such a battle would feel like a warzone were you be in it.
The sound design in UBW is amazing. I love how missed hits sound like cannon shots impacting the ground, or how sharp and metallic every clash of weapons sounds, or even the way particularly strong or fierce clashes use some very sexy gunshot sounds during the impact. Gunshot sounds used for things that aren't gunshots are some of my favorite examples of sound design: they absolutely sell you on the power behind Saber and Lancer's fight early on, and they do it just as well in this fight.

But no wait he hesitated when pulling Ea out so does that mean that Shirou was worthy enough that he had to pull out Ea? So it was like a last resort? Hmm but I guess it was good that Shirou did cut his arm off and sliced him before he could do anythin.
Klein Azzel In the VN he goes for EA and don't hesitate but shirou notices him goinf for that sword and cuts his arm before he can get EA other difference is that in the VN Shirou doesn't run out of mana in the end. But i like the modifications that ufotable made to this fight, it became even more hype than before. If you watch this fight in the studio deen version it's closer to the VN but not as epic as the ufotable version.
"How df did a mortal beat a demi-god? In close combat? PLOT ARMOR!" It really all comes down to Gil refusing to take Shirou seriously until it was far too late. Unlimited Blade Works is the absolute perfect counter to Gate of Babylon. Practically tailor made, assuming Gil doesn't use Ea, his most powerful weapon, which he only reserves for the mightiest foes. Anything else Gate of Babylon can throw out becomes ammunition for Shirou using the tracing ability of UBW. In the reality marble, Shirou’s tracing speed is higher than the speed at which Gilgamesh can withdraw and deploy a weapon from Gate of Babylon. So Shirou can counter faster than Gilgamesh can attack. What's worse for Gil, the more Noble Phantasms Shirou is able to trace, the more his ability grows, as UBW tracing also confers proficiency with the weapon traced, while Gil is only able to use them at best as long range projectiles. Gil was giving Shirou infinite ammunition while also holding himself back. He refused to use Ea, which UBW can't trace. The fight became a runaway problem for Gil while he struggled with his ego. The Ufotable version depicts this perfectly, with Gil hesitating for just a second to seize Ea, a wasted second that would have had Shirou atomized in front of him. But winning against Shirou in that way, and going against his own principals would have itself been a massive wound to Gilgamesh's pride.
Honestly tho, shirou would be toast if gil pulled out ea early, but he wont cause he believes no one from the 5th war is worthy enough to see it except for saber. Sad that they changed the bit where shirou actually beats gil in VN but the anime changed it so shirou ran out of magic first.

In terms of sheer raw power and ability, Gilgamesh trounces Shirou. But that ignores Gilgamesh as a character for Gilgamesh as a vessel of power. He didn't use Ea, simply because he wouldn't waste Ea on a mere mortal he looks down on. He barely accepted that his life was in danger at the end. Yes, Ea would have deleted Shirou. But gilgamesh as a character is too prideful to have used it
Watching it is one thing but understanding it is another thing entirely. It may be daunting with all the different routes but you can watch some "fate explained" videos to have better understanding
I really appreciate the whole meaning behind the unlimited bladeworks world. Shirou's father told him to never miss a day of practicing magic. As Archer went forward in his life being removed from time as he lost himself and turned his back on his ideals, this one gesture showed that he never fully gave up looking up to his father. It was a the last connection he had with himself and showed that he never fully abandoned his idealism towards his father. Maybe the VN explains it differently but thats how it looked to me
Well, the VN did explain it differently Kiritsugu sabotaged Shirou's attempt to use Magecraft out of his own safety, but Shirou went ahead and create his own Magic Circuit out of nerves end which, in turn, cause him great pain every time he use Magecraft
@Luchamasterfit Maybe that's a thematic thing but I don't think it was ever said with words. Shirou resonates with Swords. Like in practicing magecraft everyday he's super inconsistent with his reinforcement and can never project anything but once his life is he line or he's fighting to defend someone he can do it. A proper sword is created to be used in combat, to hurt or kill people. That is who Shirou is despite desiring with every figure of his being to help people.
They were actually able to do 2 major things in this fight, let the hero win, and give the antagonist who is nigh unbeatable a believable, in character reason to lose. Don't get me wrong, Gil is one of my favorite anime characters in general, so I'm bitter he lost, but I'm happy it makes sense. Yes he could have overwhelmed Shirou with the sheer amount of portals he could open before he ramps up. Yes, he could use Ea. Hell, he didn't even summon his armor. But that would break his mindset of "If I try, that means this enemy was worth my effort, which is basically losing", so I can still rationalise him winning out of it. It's not as big of an ass pull as people think. The grail expressly let Gil get summoned because it knew he could be beaten because of his arrogance

Ratundra Vi Archer is the future self of Emiya which blindly followed his resolve and got killed from that same reason. Being to save any all he could. And Emits does see his error in this and does change. But Archer will still be part of the wars. If they were to continue as it even grants Fictional heroes life as shown in the form of Assasin
But Gilgamesh never knew how to fight, he always just had such superior firepower nobody could get close enough. Thats why Shirou was the only one who could beat him if Saber didnt have Avalon
Maybe I'm reading to deep into this but a few things line up too perfectly. I quite like the idea of Shirou's Crest being a fish. Specifically a Carp. He's no dragon incarnate like Saber is but the Carp/Koi is the next best and most fitting fantastic creature for Shirou. In chinese mythology the carp swims upstream to leap the Yellow River at Dragon Gate, transforming into a Dragon. As for the things that line up: Chinese (Kansho and Bakuya, Chinese swords) Swimming upstream (The hardships of Shirou.) Leaping (The repeatedly failed high jumps.) Yellow River and Dragon Gate (In this case Shirou literally past Gate of Babylon.) Also doesn't help that his opponents are either taller than him(Berserker, Archer, Kuzuki) or standing on higher ground (Rin, Caster, Archer, Gilgamesh).
This is one of the interpretations of Shirou's symbol during his time with Rin. But another one is also the lewdest Intepretation, I mean that Shirou's "Fish" is actually a dolphin of sort, which means it signifies Shirou and Rin's very lewd Mana Transfer.

Speaking of DEEN and ufotable. I like the intensity of the fight and their emotional shout in DEEN version, but how the fight play out and the quality no doubt ufo is better.
The underlying character of Deen's Shirou and Ufo's Shirou are completely different in that regard. Deen's Shirou is just your average Battle Shounen protagonist. Meanwhile, VN/Ufo Shirou _KNOWS_ he's got that fight. This is why he's not shouting. His is a posture of confidence and strength. So he just calmly asks. _You think you've already won, King of Heroes. But tell me - Do you have enough swords?_ The fact that he says this to Gil of all people, the hero renowned for his bottomless treasury, is just the ultimate power projection. _Cause, you know. Maybe you have an unlimited number of swords - but are you sure that "unlimited" is enough to defeat me, though?_

Ya know, I once stumbled upon this before actually watching anything fate related. But now, I have watched all 3 routes of SN, Zero, Aprophyca, Umu!, am currently playing FGO, Fell in love with many servants and non servants, experienced the memes and understand them to a degree, and got to say…time was well invested. I have no regrets, this series has broke into my top 5. Well fuckin done. 👏👏👏
Unlimited blade works is my favorite out of the whole series. It has the best story and fights out of the whole series. 10/10 would watch 1000 more times

It's funny because both Shirou and Gil are men who practiced 1000 kicks once, since they never took a single NP to its full potential unlike other servants who practice their own 1 weapon many many times. But Shirou fears other servants because of this, but Gil doesn't.

You guys forget that Gil is still one of the strongest servants available for summoning, but Shirou won because he could match Gil sword for sword with the exception of EA
A neat little detail is that throughout the fight shirou was breaking gilgamesh's swords using his copies and also disarmed gilgamesh proving his point that his projections can surpass the original
Every time I watch this fight, I realized that Gilgamesh hasn’t fought for ten years and has been spending those years drinking, leaving his skills to become quite rusty and still able to use his abilities to such a degree
That’s not how it works. Servants can’t become rusty. Their bodies are spiritual and constantly kept at their peak as long as they aren’t injured. He can’t gain or lose weight, become rusty or anything like that in the event that servants are needed over an extended period of time. It’s why Saber never gains weight even though she spends most of UBW eating and sleeping.
He drank a youth potion so he never grew older after 10 years, even if he obtained a human body. Also to add, Gil is still an Archer class, and he has almost few-to-none in skills in regards to swordsmanship, so he didn't exactly go rusty. He is just really arrogant.
@@mistake1197 he is still a servant and requires a master/anchor and a steady flow of mana to sustain him which is what Kirei does. All he has now is a physical body in the same way Saber has one which is more of a detriment than it is anything else.

The hesitation only happened in the anime. It was a way to demonstrate how prideful gil really is, thus gil did not lose because he hesitated, he lose because he his pride would not allow him to use EA against someone as weak as Shirou. Once he try to grab EA Shirou won because it shows that he needed his strongest weapon to kill Shirou of all people.

In the anime his victory is because Gilgamesh got cocky. And while that is a total Gilgamesh way to go out, it underminds Shirou's victory.

An Anti-World level noble phantasm that can pretty much blow up anything in its way. But that's not it's ultimate strength; Ea actually stands for EA, Electronic Arts. The company famed for abusing its player base in order to extort as much money as they can, way more than is normally really needed for producing their games and turning profit. So why would EA try to exploit people for such an absurd amount of money?

I do love…that the main flaw of Ea, the sword that can literally scour the earth down to the bedrock at the least generous interpretation of its power…is that it’s like, actually a weapon that has to be held and swung. In a fight decided by who was better at pulling weapons out of thin air and using them as missiles, it was the one weapon that couldn’t be used that way that was just an instant too slow. Whether from pride making him hesitate here or Shirou seeing it coming in the VN, for all it’s power, Ea was the exact wrong weapon to use just then.

Shirou like he himself stated was just 1 step ahead compared to Gil who had every cards in his arsenal to stop shirou from eliminating the variables.
It was simply too late to use Ea but if he had done sooner, its a guaranteed wrap unless Shirou has Avalon (basically plot armor)
I love the sound design of this scene, each time a noble phantasm impacts one of Shirou's swords or they crash to the ground or they explode, it's a tremendous sound, as if cannons were shooting, like it's a warzone. Because I imagine such a battle would feel like a warzone were you be in it.

The sound design in UBW is amazing. I love how missed hits sound like cannon shots impacting the ground, or how sharp and metallic every clash of weapons sounds, or even the way particularly strong or fierce clashes use some very sexy gunshot sounds during the impact.
Gunshot sounds used for things that aren't gunshots are some of my favorite examples of sound design: they absolutely sell you on the power behind Saber and Lancer's fight early on, and they do it just as well in this fight.

If you watch this fight in the studio deen version it's closer to the VN but not as epic as the ufotable version.

It really all comes down to Gil refusing to take Shirou seriously until it was far too late. Unlimited Blade Works is the absolute perfect counter to Gate of Babylon. Practically tailor made, assuming Gil doesn't use Ea, his most powerful weapon, which he only reserves for the mightiest foes.
Anything else Gate of Babylon can throw out becomes ammunition for Shirou using the tracing ability of UBW. In the reality marble, Shirou’s tracing speed is higher than the speed at which Gilgamesh can withdraw and deploy a weapon from Gate of Babylon. So Shirou can counter faster than Gilgamesh can attack. What's worse for Gil, the more Noble Phantasms Shirou is able to trace, the more his ability grows, as UBW tracing also confers proficiency with the weapon traced, while Gil is only able to use them at best as long range projectiles.
Gil was giving Shirou infinite ammunition while also holding himself back. He refused to use Ea, which UBW can't trace. The fight became a runaway problem for Gil while he struggled with his ego. The Ufotable version depicts this perfectly, with Gil hesitating for just a second to seize Ea, a wasted second that would have had Shirou atomized in front of him. But winning against Shirou in that way, and going against his own principals would have itself been a massive wound to Gilgamesh's pride.

I really appreciate the whole meaning behind the unlimited bladeworks world. Shirou's father told him to never miss a day of practicing magic. As Archer went forward in his life being removed from time as he lost himself and turned his back on his ideals, this one gesture showed that he never fully gave up looking up to his father. It was a the last connection he had with himself and showed that he never fully abandoned his idealism towards his father. Maybe the VN explains it differently but thats how it looked to me

Kiritsugu sabotaged Shirou's attempt to use Magecraft out of his own safety, but Shirou went ahead and create his own Magic Circuit out of nerves end which, in turn, cause him great pain every time he use Magecraft
@Luchamasterfit Maybe that's a thematic thing but I don't think it was ever said with words. Shirou resonates with Swords. Like in practicing magecraft everyday he's super inconsistent with his reinforcement and can never project anything but once his life is he line or he's fighting to defend someone he can do it. A proper sword is created to be used in combat, to hurt or kill people. That is who Shirou is despite desiring with every figure of his being to help people.
They were actually able to do 2 major things in this fight, let the hero win, and give the antagonist who is nigh unbeatable a believable, in character reason to lose.
Don't get me wrong, Gil is one of my favorite anime characters in general, so I'm bitter he lost, but I'm happy it makes sense.
Yes he could have overwhelmed Shirou with the sheer amount of portals he could open before he ramps up. Yes, he could use Ea. Hell, he didn't even summon his armor. But that would break his mindset of "If I try, that means this enemy was worth my effort, which is basically losing", so I can still rationalise him winning out of it. It's not as big of an ass pull as people think. The grail expressly let Gil get summoned because it knew he could be beaten because of his arrogance

I love the sound design of the Gates once Gil starts summoning them rapid-fire. It legit sounds like an artillery salvo firing.
Maybe I'm reading to deep into this but a few things line up too perfectly.
I quite like the idea of Shirou's Crest being a fish. Specifically a Carp.
He's no dragon incarnate like Saber is but the Carp/Koi is the next best and most fitting fantastic creature for Shirou.
In chinese mythology the carp swims upstream to leap the Yellow River at Dragon Gate, transforming into a Dragon.
As for the things that line up:
Chinese (Kansho and Bakuya, Chinese swords)
Swimming upstream (The hardships of Shirou.)
Leaping (The repeatedly failed high jumps.)
Yellow River and Dragon Gate (In this case Shirou literally past Gate of Babylon.)
Also doesn't help that his opponents are either taller than him(Berserker, Archer, Kuzuki) or standing on higher ground (Rin, Caster, Archer, Gilgamesh).

It's funny because both Shirou and Gil are men who practiced 1000 kicks once, since they never took a single NP to its full potential unlike other servants who practice their own 1 weapon many many times. But Shirou fears other servants because of this, but Gil doesn't.

A neat little detail is that throughout the fight shirou was breaking gilgamesh's swords using his copies and also disarmed gilgamesh proving his point that his projections can surpass the original
Every time I watch this fight, I realized that Gilgamesh hasn’t fought for ten years and has been spending those years drinking, leaving his skills to become quite rusty and still able to use his abilities to such a degree
Even if he did he's arrogance and pride wouldn't let him since he's a arrogant king yet to the be the wisdom king of Urk so....
That’s not how it works. Servants can’t become rusty. Their bodies are spiritual and constantly kept at their peak as long as they aren’t injured. He can’t gain or lose weight, become rusty or anything like that in the event that servants are needed over an extended period of time. It’s why Saber never gains weight even though she spends most of UBW eating and sleeping.
He drank a youth potion so he never grew older after 10 years, even if he obtained a human body. Also to add, Gil is still an Archer class, and he has almost few-to-none in skills in regards to swordsmanship, so he didn't exactly go rusty. He is just really arrogant.
