Sakela Khambu is one of the main festivals of the Rai people, an ethnic group native to the Sikkim, Kalimpong and Darjeeling regions of eastern Nepal and India. It is celebrated twice in a year and is known by two names Ubhauli and Udhauli. Sakela Ubhauli is celebrated during the Baisakh Purnima (full moon of Baisakh month), and Sakela Udhauli is celebrated on the full moon day of Mangsir month.
The Kirats believe in exorcism and are nature worshippers. The Sakela Utsav is a prayer to Mother Nature for healthy crops and protection from natural calamities. The festival begins on the full moon of Baisakh, marking the beginning of the completed two-year agricultural year and is celebrated for fifteen days in Baisakh (April-May). Similarly, the festival of Udhauli during Mangseer (November-December), which is the harvest season, is to thank nature for providing a good harvest. In this festival, the Rai people honor the Earth Goddess Bhumi Dev.
