If you like eating Uhu, may I suggest not to shoot the blue and green ones. Those are the males. Uhu live in groups, 1 male to x number of females. When you shoot a big blue Uhu, a female from the group then has to change her sex to male to be the new male for the group. This process can take up to a year. Meanwhile no new Uhus are being laid and fertilized. The red females are not as wonderful a trophy, but you can feel better you malama i ka pono 'ed the ocean and the Uhu populations.
I understand the whole system of uhus and how they reproduce. The footage of this videos is over a span of 2 years. And in this video I shot 2 blue uhus which I needed desperately for family. To shoot 2 blue uhus over 2 years is definitely not a problem. I have a ton of footage of where I could have shot a blue uhu but didn't because I didn't need it. But no one wants to see that footage so it's not included in the video. Spearfishing is the most selective way of fishing. If you have a problem with over fishing and sustainability, talk to the people who are laying net for days and raping the reef by catching tons of fish regardless of size and species or sex as you commented. To shoot 2 blue uhus in 2 years is not something to get triggered by.
@@funsizechad I'm grateful for your in-depth reply. I'm also grateful it was over 2 years. Perhaps that was said somewhere, and I missed it. If so mea culpa. I'm also grateful that you do know about uhu's reproductive cycle. Hopefully this conversation will help others understand that as well. Another bonus. Aloha no.
