Loved the MartyT reference, good old Kiwi ingenuity. He actually needs help building a raft for his little tractor. Might be time for a colab hahaha. Wind noise is something I’ve come to appreciate with your videos Dominic. I think his budget priorities are to have the boat functioning first. Maybe we could have a gofundme for a new camera and microphone.
Thank you! Youll certainly find a lot of soft shackles on my boat! There is the fancy way with spliced dyneema with a diamond knot but i dont have any trouble with my simpler faster way coming undone, and you can make it with ordinary braid
Great video Dominic, apart from the wind noise, you need to catch a rabbit by the tail and make one of those furry things for the mic. Ocean sailing without leaving the country, nice one, Cheers from MS Matakana
Good to see you're safe and have a better rudder now. Great tips on sailing to the Chattams. You're going to need to start a book soon to rival Annie Hill's book (which is very hard to find!).
Heh hmm that book is a classic, still a lot of good advice in it. But in some ways dated. Such as now solar is really cheap and led lights dont use much power and everything has a gps in it already. And that old production boats are now insanely cheap... not really ideally designed for low income voyaging... but they where still pretty new when she was writing
That desolation is hard to convey on video. I bet it was much more empty-feeling in person. It's not as easy to find solitude nowadays, but obviously there is plenty out there.
What a cool island. If I ever sail to NZ I'll definitely stop by. The proa must be pretty stable to be towed in the open ocean. I wonder if they make a folding model that I could put on my foredeck?
oh no, I don't tow it. I only tow it short distances between anchorages. when going a long way it's on deck, behind the cabin, under the tillers, the outrigger parts packed inside. "they" = me! I designed and built the proa to fit on this catamaran! (there are several videos on the proa also)
I actually know someone that used a small proa as their tender on a monohull, they kept it assembled, ready to go, over the cabin. They had a junk rig so very little need to go forward, i think.
You can get something called liquid electrical tape, great for sealing joints in cables etc. If that’s a reasonably permanent joint, I would solder together. Wrap cables, then wrap in solder wire, heat with cigarette lighter. Slide down shrink fit cover…if you remembered to put it on first
Thanks for putting in the effort of sailing over and making a vid, but there are many periods when it's impossible to determine what you're saying with the wind noise so strong. Perhaps re-edit and overdub when you can. The requirement to have cleaned boat bottom within previous six months is a requirement when entering all NZ ports. DOC and the harbour authorities are trying to prevent the transfer of marine pests. And it's easy for you and free of cost if you choose, given you can beach your boat. Photos would suffice for proof with most Harbour Masters.
it looks like the smalltown New Zealand version of Small town NZ, everybody is suspicious of you , everybody is wary of you until they know which clique you fit into .
Oh i didnt feel very cliquy to me. Everyone wears gumboots (and takes them off inside the store) and every *single* car waves when it goes past. I would say very friendly
You must sort out your microphone system Even wear a mask with small mic inside would help kill thy wind nose. Whole video is wrecked by wind nose, sorry. Great otherwise ! Andrew
Loving the adventure Dominic but please get yourself one of those dead rabbit things for your microphone! The wind noise is excruciating to listen to!
Things breaking are the bits you remember forever. Best parts of the journey.
So So true !!.... I enjoy the quiet days, but the one's that are an adventure are the one's you remember.👍

Haha i will start collecting washed up mussle floats
Crazy world you find yourself in bro!!! Mad and so interesting....sailing on the edge...but surviving beautifully!
Thanks dennis!
Good on ya Dom! So stoked to see some footage of Chatham Is. Wild place
Thanks matt! Yes certainly very wild!
Looks like the Falklands. So happy to see another video!!!
Great show! Feels realistic & adventurous but you make it look pretty easygoing too. Crackn this yt thing! Can’t wait for the next episode 👍
Really enjoying your journey and your "keep it simple" attitude. Plus I learned a cool way to tie a soft shackle.
Thank you! Youll certainly find a lot of soft shackles on my boat! There is the fancy way with spliced dyneema with a diamond knot but i dont have any trouble with my simpler faster way coming undone, and you can make it with ordinary braid
Nice stuff. It looks very remote there.
Awesome Dominic, Hearty!
I'm starting to appreciate the occasional interruption of wind noise by your in-cabin commentary snippets 😜
Looking forward to the return journey!
Cant help thinking you were the first catamaran that had been there for a while. Awesome stuff man
Funny you should say that because the only other sailing to chatham video on youtube is a waka! th-cam.com/video/QXbhHjWYitc/w-d-xo.html
@@dominictarrsailing ah they made it look easy.
@@ecclesheat they came from napier and not right at the end of the summer!

Can’t wait to watch this Dominic!

Balkan Shipyards
thanks Rael! It didn't make it into the cut but I did get the sail up on the proa and so some shunting happened too!
Livin the dream mate! Keeping it simple and u always a smilin 🤙
I lived at port hut loved seeing me old shack cheers dude

Dominic, you're an inspiration
Damn those rudders really give you grief! Maybe they need to swing up like a Hobie cat 😅
Im considering that. Will keep these ones as a backup though!

I think I mentioned this at the time of welding.
Good thing it didn't happen at a dangerous time.
Yes you were right. I should have redone it. But by the time the video was up i had already sailed away using the bad welds!

I actually just found and brought some liquid electrical tape yesterday! I've had pretty good results with the petroleum jelly so far also
Does Kevin Clarke still own port hut?I sailed over there 6 years ago
Yes i met kevin. The house right on the warf

hmm, I have been unable to find any specific information on that, except for arriving international vessels. and some places like fiordland.
You need to get one of those fluffy things for your Mike. If not it would be better to do a voice over later.

Is Rob still in Port Hutt
I didnt meet a Rob, but i didnt meet everyone there either
5.05…..new rudder pintle
You need a wind sock for your microphone…..Wyoming USA
wind noise is much better in the next episode! unfortunately can't travel back in time and fix old recordings... !
Noise
Eating an apple while talking and filming, lost it for me. Good luck with your channel.
thanks glad you enjoyed it
Cabage tree.
correct!
technically not actually a plam tree but I hear there are nikau plam in some of the (now sadly rare) forrested parts of the island
You must sort out your microphone system
