A big shout out to Dreadbox for giving us mechanically sound MIDI connectors and 1/4" audio jacks on a small synth. Rather than the crappy, toy, short lifespan 3.5mm connectors plus added dongle for us to lose, that many cost cutting competitors dump on us musicians to increase their profit margin. Good to see a manufacturer not taking the p out of us.
Dreadbox Typhon - first impression. I’ve to admit that I’ve already been a Dreadbox fanboy so this first contact has been a bit biased upfront. In a few words - Dreadbox did a fantastic job with Typhon and the effect section powered by Sinevibes pairs excellent with the internal sound engine. Don’t judge this synth on his size (at least I’ve underestimated it) - inside there is a vast sound engine that’s way more flexible one would expect at fist sight delivering melancholic leads, heavy basses, effect sounds, obscure textures and much more. This would definitely be a keeper for me.
My wallet hates all you people. This one of the best effects integrations i have ever seen. Most of my synths have effects, but they are mostly "the last section add-on" and i mostly dont do much with them because they are meh
hahaha - please tell your wallet I'm really sorry. You're right - effects are usually not more than an add on. dreadbox and sinevibes managed to melt both worlds together in the best possible way. Currently I can only think of Novation Peak / Summit where this has been done equally well.
@@NatLifeSounds I've tried it but imo the integration doesn't go far enough for creative sound design. Within Peak, Typhon and Elektron (amongst others) you can access a lot of the parameters via the mod matrix and thus make it a part of the sound design process. Something the Minilogue XD is simply missing because of the lack of enough mod sources. Sound wise you're right. There are lots of good sounding add on effects out there.
@@HotStrange Absolutely! Elektron is great, too. XD has nice sounding effects but nothing special in terms of in depth sound design with complex effect modulation
That sound at 2:21 is enough to sell you on this box... Next instrument I am getting after the Harmonicon (which technically I have ordered). It will be wonderful next to my Erebus.

The sound @6:16 is stunning!!! Great box for a nice price. They did an awesome job to put fx in the box. Let's face it, synths are nice and all, but really come alive with the right fx...! Nice video too! How user friendly is this box?
I might wanna pick this up mostly for the FX. I'd route my (Moog) Grandmother into it, which is often wired up with my eurorack. I'm wondering how the ext in work for the effects. Do you have to hold down a note or something or does it just work? Anybody have experiences doing something like that?
Very nice demonstration of an amazing-sounding little synthesizer. I particularly like how the effects are finally really doing the sound justice whereas the ones built into earlier Dreadbox offerings have been a bit underwhelming to me. If I hadn't had any hardware synths yet, this might have been the one to make me take the leap. At the moment I am still exploring the Kilpatrick Phenol, which is another synth that is a lot of instrument for the money and a potential gateway synth into patchable and modular synthesis.
@@limbicbits Well, if you don't like the sound, that's always a non-starter with a synth. It has to be both a sound you like and that inspires you to create music, and a user interface that doesn't get in the way.
me neither! And I really liked the way how they introduced the product. A short teaser and then releasing a product immediately available - not like some other companies that won't stop teasing without really delivering (or shipping a product that's still beta).

These patches have been created for the purpose of this demo video only (well, I had to return the loaner and didn't make a backup...). But I will release a patch bank for Typhon in the near future. (this June or July)
Some lovely sounds coming from their latest offering. What's the workflow like for doing your own patches? It looks like it has the potential to be very fiddly. I'd love to see how quickly you can dial a complex patch in.
The layout of all parameters is quite intuitive once you've internalised the shift functions. The eight pots on the left side give you access to the most important parameters in live situations and to go deeper into sound design you have to do some menu diving. I'd only wish for two things: 1. a more intuitive sequencer programming (motion recording and direct note in using an external keyboard) 2. Assigning the faders on the right side for performances. I'd love to have access to effect D/W and Attack / Release at the same time.
Thanks iv been having problems with all my old korg electrons midi wasnt working with digitkt or cycels so i was thinking of making cycels the controller to run the digitkt and key step with that tyhon seems like it has endless sound capabilities. And really diffrent then what im using .sadly i had to sell my analog four to get my telecaster. Really like the lines you were demoing sound like you have great feel awsome stuff . Thanks - afaik you can only program note sequences directly via the synth menu. Hopefully they implement a record feature in future that allows you to program it using an external keyboard, too.
It has a lot of the standard mod destinations, but nicely it lets you modulate some of the effects parameters as well. Watch the 3 Typhon presets that Dreadbox analyses in their video.
Watched this video twice and for some reason I want to know more about that notebook than how the sequencer works. I mean, the pen is right there, might be the next plans for world domination in there or a recipe for a meal that could cure global warming or plans for a time machine? Whats in there!
In this case, it makes totally sense. Also, the footprint is quite small - and having tried it out I'd rather sell another unit to make space for this one. It's been a while since a synth has impressed me that much like typhon did.

How flexible is the effects routing? Can you stick the flanger before the distortion? Or is it fixed as dirt>mod>time?
I've to check that again but as far as I remember it was fixed as Distortion/Bitcrusher > Mod > Time

Whatever dreadbox do it's seems at the core is a killer osc and filter, like it should be. Worth it for the effects alone on this one.

It's good but maybe you didn't tryed Minilogue XD, it's still the best Analog synth with effects integration .
This, the Peak/Summit, and Prologue/XD all have amazing effects. Elektron is really no slouch there either.

Thanks. Phenol is cool but I just didn't like its sound character. But I agree - If you like its sound it offers a lot of possibilities for the money.

When you bypass the FX, the stereo out turns in to mono?With my DSI mopho you can achieve stereo sounds with out fx

It has a lot of the standard mod destinations, but nicely it lets you modulate some of the effects parameters as well. Watch the 3 Typhon presets that Dreadbox analyses in their video.
