A gem! That’s what this video is. Thank you for doing all the research and for preparing this well-made video for your subscribers. All excellent wine and vintage recommendations; reputable and renowned producers that we know and love. You make wine-shopping even more fun that it already is, and a lot easier, too. As always, your YT content is a testament to the breadth and depth of your experience, education, and expertise. Santé, John!
Another excellent video. Love your approach of mixing affordable with more exclusive wines, exactly as the wines in my cellar. Keep the videos coming 🎥🍷
Love the choices…. The Oddity is amazing. I’m a dry furmint fan. The Pio is delicious…had an 04 last night that was corked…😢. But had a second bottle that was just fine! If you ever get up here Century Liquor and Wine should be a stop….bigger than a football field….and the only place I know anywhere near here where I can get pre 2000 Yquem (and all the first growths) by the case.
John, I enjoyed this so much because I recognize so many wines that I appreciate such as the Furmint, the Barolo, the Greco di Tufo and the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. I also met the wine producers for Donnachiara and Renieri, and visited Pio Cesare in Piedmont. This is a phenomenal recommendation list, and I am taking notes on the other wines. Thank you for your time and expertise. I always get a free education on here. Cheers!
That St Cosme CdR sounds great. Just checked over here, and the Wine Society have the 2022 in stock for £12.50 (around $15.80) a bottle. Definitely going to have to take a look at that one!
Excellent recommendations for the quality of the wines. I still remember that I paid less than $30 for Le Petit Lion 2015 at Costco, and less than $50 for Langoa future 2018 & 2019.
@@AttorneySomm For some reason, Costco wine section has shrunk quite significantly for the last year or so, especially the premium wines, in northern Dallas area. Their Bordeaux price has been very competitive. I found recently HEB was aggressive on wines. The wine director at HEB told me that they feel more confident about the wine market and would carry more premium European wines in the future.
@@williamhuang2976 Thank you. That is disappointing re: Costco, but explains why my local store had such a miserable selection last week. That is great re: HEB. Sounds promising! I heard the new store had very long lines to get in.
@@AttorneySomm when HEB opened the 1st store in Frisco, the line was horrible for a week, now the 2nd store opened last week in Plano, still crowded, but there is no line anymore.
I have a bottle of the 2014 Chateau Margux’s third label wine. I can’t wait to try it. That Pinot seems to get some buzz in the wine community on Instagram. I don’t normally go to Total Wine for my wine, this will be an exception.
Marques de Murrieta is such a good wine. It's crept a bit in price recently but it's still a good buy and excellent value. Great with all manor of rich Mediterranean food. Trimbach often turn up in good wine retailers and are worth a try as well. Store picks really depend on where you live but there's usually something worth getting even when the pickings are slim. This selection is obviously from a good neighbourhood. I'm weighing in John. WT
Some goodies here. Trimbach is very reliable and I enjoy their style. Love pinot blanc - much underrated. One you might consider for value is my go-to: Caves de Turckheim, a highly regarded co-op. Pio Cesare is another reliable pick and I have recently enjoyed its grignolino. This weekend I have been drinking a bottle brought by a house guest during the summer. It is a SA pinot noir from Franschoek - Chamonix. It is outstanding: Burgundy Premier Cru standard. I am just finishing the last few sips now. My knowledge of the new world is fairly limited but I am beginning to appreciate South African wines: I have bought a couple of vintages of Meerlust Rubicon and have put in a bid for Warwick Trilogy, 2018, en primeur. Are you familiar with the Chamonix, Meerlust or Warwick? Bad hair day?
Ha! Yes bad hair day. 😂 I’m familiar with Meerlust. Definitely need to try more SA wines. Sadly the selection here in Dallas is very limited. Think I need to visit.
Great selection, a few of my favourites in there and some I’ve never tried. I think I would keep the Pio Cesare in the cellar for a couple more years though - even with decanting and food I think it would be better with a bit more time to soften.
Great selection! Can I dare to make a suggestion to a future content ? What American wines would you recommend that have the European profile ? By that , I mean with less American oak , more fresh and elegant , and are cellar worthy ? I usually travel do the US and shop around , and the market is - like the world I guess - more and more divided by the low acidity crowd pleasers and the natural wild connaisseurs…. Thanks again !
Thanks very much! I have definitely noticed that recently many Napa producers have cut back on the new oak. Last fall when I visited the 2018 and 2019s, in particular, were much more European in style. But I will certainly give that some thought and see what I can do! Cheers!
I have gone heavy on the Lilian and Les Haut de Larrivet but our Total Wine here has a shameful selection of Spanish, Greek and South African wines. There’s a HUGE selection of California Cabs ranging from pretty good to dish water
Why do you never mention any South African wines? There are literally 100's of magnificent South African wines at bargain prices but it seems as though none of these wines find their way to the USA or that you're not interested in trying them? PS - I would love to help out and send you a large selection of whatever SA wines you would like to try! 😉
I discuss them in this recent video from a few weeks ago. th-cam.com/video/n5yjElOTSxE/w-d-xo.html Yes the selection in Dallas is quite limited, unfortunately. It is a region I would like to explore in more detail.
My all time favorite wine videos are when experts go into a store and walk around looking at the various labels and talking about them. Such as the wine king video where they are in Costco. This is the second time I am highly disappointed by your video claiming to be such a video but ends up being just you talking over some pictures. I hope that you make a true wine store video soon.
Here is one where I record at the store. This is the same concept except I recorded at home because the music was blasting and I would have copyright issues with the music being audible. th-cam.com/video/TKA0QN-wNbY/w-d-xo.html
Here is another video with wine store picks if you would like additional recommendations: th-cam.com/video/PDWX3G_s5FA/w-d-xo.html
