Too many animation students go straight into animating their shots without really knowing what the shot is about! It's okay to take a day or two and just plan out your shot!
hello Jean i get lots and lots confused about timing I've heared a lot from Richard Williams to any pro guys say filming is the best tools to calculate how many frame/time an act for instance like a punching need. vimeo.com/425262876/ed06b4f29c in this video of Jason he did a filming of himself and then animate that i know the animate can be very different than live action we can pushing more poses but my question is the timing of live action and animate shot is very very different and this a lot different can't effect his character a lot and get bad timing?i mean is the character moves get very slow or very fast?
th-cam.com/video/loCiTO8qEMI/w-d-xo.html i mean exactly this Richard Williams says about Ben Washam first timing and then he filming and found the correct timing that his Yawning needs 2 second
hadi najafpour I’d primarily look at reference as a guide for mechanics, how do things move, test out ideas, etc. and build on top of that. You can’t copy the timing exactly unless you’re rotoscoping first live-action but even then you’ll end up tweaking the timing.
Very helpful information! You animating the sit down and up reference would make a great body mechanics tutorial. I realise thats ALOT of work so totally understand if you didn't. (But just in case you were thinking of it!)
Great video JD. I usually plan all the shot first with draws and with the timing for every action, so later I can build upon it. And I think reference is great to learn about weight, acting, timing and to push the poses.
Hi Mr. Hass, I have continued to see your videos. Do you have any tips when you are trying to animate something that you can't do? For instance, I can't do backflips but I want to animate my character doing a backflip. I try looking for references from other people doing but it can sometimes be a bit tricky, what's your opinion on this. Aside from that very good analysis keep up the good work!
Paolo Acero Thank you very much! And it’s basically what you said, look at reference of people who can do it. Maybe find someone who does it and talk to them so they can walk you through the process?
Eric Thompson You’re welcome! Beats studying other work or breaking things up into beats for your own shots? What do you have in mind? (and the answer is yes 😁)
Jean-Denis Haas thanks for getting back to me. I would say, breaking up beats in your shots. Or how a student should approach beats before animating. Both ways will be awesome to see.
Sometimes when I find my self at a situation where I don’t have time to find or shoot a reference, I can only imagine my GOLDEN poses, but breaking them down is very hard. It is difficult for me to imagine how the body will look like when moving from a pose to another. And I think this is a primary skill to be an animator. I know that using references is super important but how to deal with such situations where you have to animate without one? Side note, I can’t draw :( Thanks in advance!
Yeah I can’t draw either. You try to act it out yourself if you’re able to, which will at least give you some idea of how things move from pose to pose and might even give you other ideas. But imagination is key, at least for me, and for sure comes with practice, experience and lots of observations over time. I don’t really start a shot until I see everything clearly in my head but I also experiment and improvise once I’m animating.
@@jeandenishaas Firstly , thanks a lot for replying Jean this means a lot for me 👏🏼 Secondly, I wanna ask you, do you find it helpful to practice animating from imagination and thinking about poses and their breakdowns rather than practicing animating from reference or that will be a waste of time and energy? Will that even add to me as an animator?
Nice vid! Im new to 3d animation!! your videos help a lot for newbies like me, big fan!! pls make videos on key poses in reference video and in-between breakdowns. Thank you! 😊
At first no matter who tell I would never shot reference caz am that lazy to put the cam and act but now am doing my reference but still some days I don't shoot caz old habits never dies lol
Awesome video! Is there like a limit to the number of golden poses we should identify? Or does it depend on the action happening in the reference video? I usually import the reference to Maya. Is that the right approach or is there a better way to do it? PS: Your office is so amazing! :D
Harshal Ashar Hahah thanks! It’s definitely a nerdy office! I would put a limit on it otherwise you’re getting into breakdowns and in betweens. Look for the main story telling poses. You can always do another pass with a different color for crucial body mechanic poses. And importing into Maya (or not) is totally fine. I prefer Maya so that when I scrub through the animation the reference scrubs as well.
@@jeandenishaas Makes a lot of sense. In my previous semester, we were asked to start off with 5 main poses, which I felt were too little, most of the time. Also, when swiveling the chair, what should the constraint relationship be? Chair-hand-parent constrain or hand-chair-parent constrain?
@@jeandenishaas Hi! One more question. I was using the Grease Pencil tool to draw out some shapes. When I tumbled a bit in the persp view, they vanished. Is there a way to fix that? Thank you!

Nice one thanks fellah

Thanks JD. appreciate all the helpful videos. Just wondering, any chances on having a video on studying animation beats?

Could you make one video about timing and spacing in detail and also graph editor (in maya)
