I have to skip the music, can't explain why but ot drives me nuts. But i enjoy the rest of his content.
i can't stand the music he picks!!! its so awful..!!! soooooo bad,, and yet i really like Dale., love this channel,, but he uses literally thee most cringe music i've ever heard in my entire life.. it makes me sad and angry at the same time. idk why he doesn't just have some acoustic guitar.. or piano.. something with a real instrument maybe.. that nasty techno, i can stomach for like 5-10 seconds.., but anything longer than that, it just drives me insane.. its incredibly annoying and repetitive... long way of saying, ' i agree..' lol

Dubbin as it's called in the UK was the standard treatment for sports footwear to waterproof and condition the shoes or boots during the second half of the 20th century and is still used today . Sometimes we used to heat it over a stove which would turn it liquid and it would be absorbed quite easily into the leather.
Even Saphir still produce an expensive version of Dubbin.

Is it alright to use Saphir Graisse Dubbin on natural Chromexcel roughout? Everything I have found indicates that it is meant for calfskin and not for suedes or roughouts. Historically, these roughout service boots were always coated with dubbin and never worn in their light tan natural state. These boots aren't cheap, and I know applying dubbin will be irreversible and completely change the look, so I was curious if you have ever applied it to CXL roughout with good results (or prefer something else).
@@Kretikos I haven't applied dubbin to any split suede or roughout (reverse or full grain suede) but you're right it would create a sort of waxed suede finish. It can be used to top up or renew waxy suede boots for example and has a lower melting point than alternatives like Otter Wax.
If you have suede boots of any description that you wish to make water resistant but wish to maintain the normal suede nap then you have to use one of the proofing sprays. I prefer the Tarrago nano spray which seems to be a little cheaper than the Saphir equivalent and works at least as well if not a little better. The Tarrago spray also smells less toxic. Saphir now owns Tarrago but seems to use a different formulation.
Regarding conditioning, there's no real need to condition roughout boots under normal circumstances , especially CXL roughout, as CXL is very oily naturally though Saphir does sell spray for this. I have doubts about how effective this is. You could condition the inside of your roughout boots with any smooth leather conditioner if they're not lined at the risk of stained socks for a little while but generally wouldn't bother.
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd Thanks for the reply. I'll probably go ahead and apply the Saphir graisse dubbin to my vibergs to make the most highfalutin WW2 replica boots imaginable. I'll let you know if it ends up being a disaster...
@@Kretikos You'll probably be able to recover them to some degree if you don't like the waxy suede look. The wax on waxy suede tends to wear off with use which is why it has to be reapplied. Dubbin with its relatively low melting temperature in the range 105F to 115 F may be easier to remove than other waxes by heating the leather gently with a hair dryer. That and some saddle soap will probably clean them up to some degree though I'm sure they'll look a bit more worn than their pristine condition but patina is the in thing now anyway.

Roughout’s delicate looks are misleading
Truman has their own stock version of the “boondocker” in its line up as well. 79 last, 270” storm welt, all eyelets, brown Eugene sole, Seidel dark coyote fought out.
$140 less as well.

Those look like they will outlast a human lifetime.
I wore this same pair, purchased at the 30% discount, for the patina thunderdome that just completed. They darkened and showed some rolls with the wear, but were completely impervious to stains and scuffs that one sees on the smooth side of leathers. They would not show wear-and-tear even when worn every day for six months. For sizing, the maker told me to buy Brannock size. I wish I had gone half size down. Used a Nicks insole to make the fit more snug. Overall a great boot, though the edge finish on my pair was messily done. For the current N1 I believe they improved on the finishing and added the extras. I purchased another field boot with natural CXL with the smooth side out, and it is excellent also, but I believe it is 360 degree Goodyear.
Yeah, the fit is odd - very wide. I had to sell mine.
The half down is what I recommend! True to size I’m finding is relative from brand to brand

After buying lots of other boots, I find the Oak St. lasts to be a little...uninspired. Just nothing grabs me about the look. But that leather looks great.
The Elston last is meant to be comfortable and utilitarian. Not sleek and European.

differance between the army and the marines rough out was type of soles and the marines uses rivets on them to army didn't

The elston last is super wide I thought too. Nice to hear some feedback on that because I wasn’t sure if I just got an unusual pair. I got my first OSB’s recently. The cap toe trench in natty CXL and leather sole. Plenty of toe box room for sure but I can deal with that. It’s actually quite comfortable despite it in my mind technically “not fitting” right. I’d much rather have extra room than the other way around.

It's meant to be wide, kinda like the Munson. You can always take away excess volume, you can never add it.

I wonder did they mean Corcoran rather than cordovan. Maybe they ment munson last jump boots that had pigment finish. There was same makeup in 6inch and shoe version in same last and leather
It is sad Oak Street don't have the ability to produce anything on wide or EE lasts. Trying to find one that fits width ends up being clownish in length.
Yeah, their lasts seem to be D+ width or possibly even E width.

John Lofgren does insanely good reproductions from the war era… I can’t recommend them enough. This is such a large topic I should have included them

Oak Street makes nice boots, but I think they are overpriced and unfortunately their last does not fit me at all - super wide.

@@louisshirk5027 Who said anything about made in China boots Louise? I own nearly a dozen pairs of high end boots, none of which are made in the third world and I’ve owned a pair of Oak Streets. They’ve raised their prices by 30% in the last year alone and the quality does not justify the price.
