I have both. Bought my GFX 50r with 63, but than Fuji had crazy deal when they sold 50 3.5 for 550 brand new. Was not able to withstand, and, I really love 50. I would choose it over 63 every day, no question here! The both sharp, both have very good rendering, but what makes me love 50 more is far better autofocus and, I am huge fan of 40mm FOV! My favourite normal lenses for systems I used: Ultron 40 2.0, Lumix 20 1.7 Canon 40 2.8, Fujifilm 27 2.8... so, you got the idea, I guess. I am in love with this lens. And I think 40 mm is much more interesting lense to use for every day shooting. I can share some nice pictures with GFX and 50, if u like it.
I have the 50mm, but just found a good deal on a used 63mm and decided to buy it. I plan to use the 50mm for street and travel (post COVID...), and the 63 for portraits and stills. It’s hard not to like the 63. And the 50 is just so practical... Both are amazing lenses. The GFX system is very special indeed.
Ah, yes! Been waiting patiently for more GFX related content! I love the 50mm more and more each time I use it. I think the lens hood is perfect for it as well! That shot at 0:13 is incredible!
Probably choose the 50. Seems to be the best lens to walk around with and to take with me daily. Then again, the 50r isn’t exactly the smallest of cameras. However, I know myself and would be more willing to lug around the 50r with a smaller lens than the bigger 63. Love the videos!
Call me crazy but I really own both: the 50 AND the 63... I've planned to replace the 63 with the 50 but then I looked at all the pictures i've shot with the 63 and I've kept it ;)
I chose the 50mm f/3.5 because a.) it's much smaller, making it easier to fit into smaller bags with my GFX 50R, b.) as Mattias mentioned, the classic "50mm equivalent" looks different on the 4:3 aspect ratio medium format sensor, almost long enough to be a short telephoto lens, c.) the 2/3 stop difference in aperture wasn't enough to persuade me to buy the 63mm, d.) the 50mm f/3.5 went on sale for US$500 earlier this year, which is an unbelievable steal for *any* medium format lens.
Hi! I’ve used a 50mm lens as my go-to on full frame 3:2 cameras for years. Would you say that the GF 50mm 3.5 is the closest thing to it for my GFX 50R setup given the change in apsect ratio you mentioned?
I went for the 50 due to its smaller size. Size helps a great deal in being “invisible” on the streets, and wider angle allows me to set focus to a fix setting and with a f stop above 8 shoot without looking in the view finder or focusing at each shot. So yeah, the 50 is perfect for street photography with a midium format. ;-)
I only have one GF lens. I bought the 50mm primarily because it was heavily reduced new to £500. I wanted at least one GF native lens so I could get a feel for the AF performance. The size & weight of the 50mm also appealed more. What may make an interesting comparison would be the 50 vs the 45.
i had the 63mm , the focus motor broke 3 times. i sold it and now i am using the 45 and 110, occasionally the 58 voigt. if i would not have the 45, i would give the 50 a try
As a first lens for the GFX I would probably be tempted to get the Mitakon 63mm f/1.4. I wouldn't mind manual focus on a camera with such slow AF, and Fujifilm also has great focus peaking imo. The Mitakon 63mm is pretty heavy though. Jonas Rask has a nice review on his website.
If you justify it by thinking the AF is slow I'm afraid I have to disappoint you. It's not slow at all. I'm sure you can think of other reasons to get the Mitakon, I'm looking into it myself, but slow AF is not one of them :)
I’d go for the 50 f/3.5 I believe. The 110 f/2.0 and a 28mm equivalent would be also what I’d have . Those pictures from the 110 looked so nice . I would love to have this whole setup of that body and those lenses. I am very invested into Nikon DSLRs and now video cameras. So not enough money for all this
I have had all of the gf lenses except the 50mm. I loved the 45mm but it is too wide and not wide enough. I love the 23 for "wide" needs. The 63mm is underwhelming to me as its not long enough compared to my 110mm. The 45-100 covers them all but the 50mm is a great walk around lens on the 100s or other gfx bodies. Th 50 was my last inline desire. It helps to reduce the overall size of the system if I want to be less conspicuous.. Thank you for your video. I will follow you on Instagram.
I'm glad we came to the same conclusion. Your pictures make me miss my GFX50R and 50mm f3.5 (which you can buy for 600 CHF/US$ here these days) but I'm happy with the X-pro3 & X100V instead. Thanks for sharing and have fun!
Interesting. I have both the 45 and the 63. I will be selling both and getting the 50. Something about the 63 has never appealed to me snd I stopped using it. Going back to it I had the same ever so slightly negative experience. Not sure why the 45 on the other hand is to me wonderful and I hate to part with it. But I’m trying to simplify and also to have a Lens for what I call walk around. In the comments I saw someone saying they were going to get the 50 and then the 45. This does not make sense to me. The 30mm on the other hand....! For prime shooters: 23, 30, 50, 80 seems like the way to go to me. Then the 100-200. I have the 110. And it is the best lens for portraits I have used since the 1950s. I’d love to see you do a long serious thoughtful comparison between the 80 and the 110. My understanding is that Fuji “softened” the 80 due to reports from portrait pros that the 110 was “too sharp”. Maybe you have already done this. But if not it would be welcome. The only problem from my point of view with the 110 is that it is quite heavy...
Im looking to buy gfx 50s ii for street/nature scape hoby, for social media posting and personal portfolio collection, not planing printing tho and cant decide between gf 50mm and gf 45mm lenses, i love having short compact lenses but i in the same time i dont want to compromise of iq dramatically. What lenses would you recommend me to buy
Now I feel like a little hungry kid, standing in front of a restaurant window. Looking at the people eating those succulent dishes. I put on my cutest little frown. Hope someone will bring me a chicken breast or a stale bread.
Saving up to buy the (discounted still!) GFX 100S and started looking for second hand lenses. I found the 63mm at 50% off of new price and am going for it. I do want to get the GF 110 eventually, and something on the wider end too. 35-70 perhaps?
Hmm... I prefer everything about the 50mm, but the 63mm has more of that special look to it in side-by side shots. But that said, it would have to be the 50, you got some gorgeous shots with it like the one of Gunpowder sunning herself at 3:00, the 2% bokeh difference is not worth the other tradeoffs IMO.
Thanks for the video. I've been mildly obsessing about getting the GFX system sometime in the future and was planning on getting the 63mm as my first lens. Your review, however, is making me rethink it. The focus movement you mentioned is the same issue I have with the 35mm 1.4 on the X system and it drives me a little crazy and slows things down. The 50 seems suited for walking around and travel etc but the 63mm would be better for portraits. Who knows it's basically fantasyland for me at this point anyway!
Great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts ! I would love to have a 50R and the 50 3.5 for documenting my adventures while hiking.. seems like the dream combo for a compact medium format setup. But i'm afraid of the price tag for it..
I have the 50r with 50mm. Great combo that could be had a great price when they were on sale. Normally on FF and 135, I prefer more compact lenses around the 35mm and 40mm focal length. I'm thinking contax T2 38mm, Contax 45mm, Minolta/Leica 40mm, Voigtlander 40mm, etc.. If you have to have just one lens, 50mm can sometimes feel a little tight and 35mm a little wide. The GF50 is basically that compact 40mm for the GF bodies. HOWEVER I rented a 63mm and found it to be a much better fit for me. I preferred the way the lens balanced on the camera and I don't know if it's 4:3 crop or something about the way I shoot with MF but I preferred the slightly tighter FOV as well. I kind of wish I had the 63mm instead but then I remind myself of the killer deal I got on the combo. As a general walk around lens, that noisy motor on the 63mm is borderline a deal breaker as I find it pretty annoying. I don't mind it on a vintage point and shoot but not on a slick new $5k digital rig.
When living in Alaska I learned one thing about camera lenses, always buy the fastest lens you can afford. The pictures I could have gotten if I had a Zeiss 50mm f1.4 to go onto my Nikon is disheartening to even think about.
What are the aspects of the gfx that interest you most and make you want to own it over another camera? It’s hard for us to compare looking at images on TH-cam. I know you have used many different lenses and camera, and appreciate your insight. Thank you
Great comparison but I would go for Neither! You may as well get the 32-63mm f4 zoom it’s basically almost the same speed as the pancake but with a much versatility you can go from landscape architecture to half body portraits.
Mattias Burling Ideally I prefer primes as well, but Its not always practical, especially in a fast pace professional shooting situation. With my run and gun weddings. Sometimes you only get 20-30mins for the main group shots portraits, changing lenses constantly will slow you down a lot. Customer wont see the difference from a prime or zoom, you will probably struggle to see the difference yourself.
For my pro work its all primes. And I can definitely see the difference between getting the shot and missing it, which Im much more likely to do with a zoom. Use what works best for you, for me zooms aren't worth the hassle.
Mattias Burling agree! It all depends on the type of shoot your on, for studio work i also prefer primes, but for my wedding photojournalism sometimes you miss more shots because you are stuck on a prime lens, where a zoom can give you more freedom to more spontaneous. Each for there own.
I rock the 50mm (and the 35-70) on my 50Sii... it's a fantastic "almost pancake" lens... about as small as you can get on medium format, and pretty much turns the GFX into a big X100.
I don't like the 50mm focal length, so for me it's between the 45 and the 50... My idea was 45mm an 110mm. That would cover 90% of my needs. But... I have to save up first ;-)
I am yet to realize full potential of my Fuji XT3 ..... so GFX will have to wait till at-least next year. Your review is delight to watch as usual .. and it gravitates towards GFX-R body and 50mm lens
Mattias Burling at the moment if I want a wide photo, I take multiple photos with the 50mm and do panorama stitch and then crop to the aspect ratio I want. Not perfect but hope I can get the 23 soon. My friend’s GFX100 died after hiking in the rain with the laowa 17 attached in his backpack. Water got in. Have to be aware of the weather.
I have both. once you start walking around you will realize how much slower the 63mm is. speed is actually not close in real-world scenarios. The 50mm is also sharper and with the f3.5 ap it makes for a lens brings more life to a frame.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Try kids. Moving subjects on the street tend to be predictable to a degree. Kids, on the other hand, are not. Regardless, the 50mm is not doubt faster with AF. personally, I use the 63mm when I know I will have a little extra time. You are right about the speed of the 63mm. people reading reviews on the 63mm mostly take away the speed. The 63mm is not a turtle. In terms of what the lens can produce, it is fast. if you have both, you are in good shape!
@@gearreallydoesntmatter you have not met my kids! Seriously, I would love to see you adapt some 645 and 67 lenses to the GFX. I had a Kipon P645 GFX focal reducer fall into my lap, with only one 645 lens, I am impressed! I wonder if 67 would be magical!
Sorry, dont have access to any of them and my goal is first and foremost set on the 110/2 and 35/3.5. So unless I get to borrow one of those it wont happen for a long time.
Sometimes I think it would be fun to go on a road trip on Route 66, and photograph America's Southwest with just a GFX50S II and a GF50mm. Or maybe just throw a GF110mm in the bag too, to have options. Then again, a GF45-100mm would cover this range by itself too. Hmm.
3.5K is still the standard retail price here. After the sale the stores here simply announced that it's the new price and they kept it. Used in stores with warranty it's sub 3K.
There are no "fair" comparisons, nor are there unfair once, it doesn't even make sense :) With that said, the 45mm is probably nice but I don't like 35mm equivalent. It's not wide, it's not normal, it's not tele. I try to stay away from compromises. All just imo of course.
Anyone else kind of chuckle at the idea of the 50mm being a pancake lens because it's still so huge, comparatively to say a Fuji X 27mm? (I know different systems entirely.) But an absolutely stellar camera, I had been interested in the system as a kind of holy grail (0 chance I'm affording it right now) and I'm really glad you are testing out the system (even if you are increasing the chance I'll be poorer in the future).
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I definitely get that sort of vibe from your video though. Especially the talk about the focus motor reminding me a lot of discussion on the 35mm f1.4 (aperture also being a statement) I guess that would make the GF 110 kind of a XF 56 equivalent (though I've never used any of those lenses). Admittedly I would have loved a side by side image of the two pancakes.
50mm and 110mm and then wait for the 28mm then on. a medium format camera I think those three lenses would satisfy me for quite some time, but alas this camera is between $7000 - $10.000 AUD and that's just the body so I do not see me purchasing this camera anytime soon unfortunately.😩
i have not tested canon on my gfx but Nikon Carl zeiss sigma and voigtlander they dont mach the reselution of the gfx lenses but they renders Nice but dosent have the reselution the big sensor have the gfx lenses is rated for over 100MP reselution .
Spännande Mattias. Jag går och funderar på att byta till Fuji från fullformat. Är du nöjd med kameran? Några problem? Hur är fujiservice? Hälsningar @ivarsony
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i understand.. Since you're considering the 50mm, it's only 5mm difference, i think it's one of gfx's best lens.. Looking forward for your next gfx video sir.. Thanks
I was looking at the fuji medium format kit thinking, man, I wish it had a leaf shutter for mad flash sync But then I saw your edits and realised... I don't think flash is really needed on these. Then I had a play on my (ancient) Canon 6D and it's not terribly far off. Makes me wonder how these files are! Must be so much scope for editing.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i know, thank s for taking the time, but i was wondering of the result of going with bigger than fullframe with 645... as always, very noce to see you vids, good day!
The GF 50mm is really compact and a tad quicker in AF. I had it for a few weeks but returned it because I had an opportunity to purchase a used GF 110mm f2. I also have the 45mm f2.8 so my midrange focal length is covered.
If the difference isn’t visible in normal everyday image, why do you need medium format camera? Is it really difference to other format (example: APSC or Full frame)?
I'll go for the 50mm, plus the 90mm f1. 25 from TTartisan, and I also got me a Nikon 135mm f2. 0 DC plus adapter... Now I need to sell all my Sony gear that I can afford the 100s. Hello from NZ
Mattias Burling I know the 50 is f3.5 but for me money is a big thing so I would only buy the 50 mm and because this camera has a lot of quality you can easily crop it to 63 mm without losing a lot of quality.
Yes you can. I was just pointing out for others that might be reading that a 50mm cropped to 63mm will not be the same as a 63mm. Even when using the same aperture.
I always loved Fuji. Have a few and still use them. Size matters for me as I tend to use only primes. So the 50mm would be the pic .. although this medium format looks significantly like a BIG 🎥. And I’m not sure if the image quality is that much better than a Sony A9 . Love the comparison as always 😊
I always carry a camera. My interchangeable system is always only for when Im out with the intent of shooting. But currently the GR is on leave since Im using the Coolpix A.
I've used both as well as the 45 and would choose the 45 all day. The best image quality, the tonal detail blows the other 2 away. It is more expensive but for good reason. You mentioned other lenses for a kit earlier, mine are 45, 110, and my Nikon 20mm f1.8g. Waiting to try the 45-100 for the OIS. The 32-64 was nice but the 45 has such incredible image quality that I decided to go primes. I mean, isn't ultimate image quality the reason why you go medium format?
It really comes down to which focal length people prefer. Differences in size, price and aperture are all secondary. A few years I might have gone with the slightly wider lens, now I'm not so sure. But yeah that 110mm f2 along with the 50mm f3.5, would be nicely spaced. But why not go with the 45mm f2.8 for a truly normal wide instead? Then just add the 63, the 23 for the extra wide, the aforementioned 110 and you have have a four lens kit that covers the most standard equivalent focal lengths. 🤑
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Anything could be a potential deal breaker. But the those potential breakers won't be looked at unless the focal length is wanted. 35 use to be my "safe" walk around prime FL. Now I cover it with my one zoom (16-35) and save room in the bag for longer primes.
Thank you for the Video. I love your work and voice. I have both lenses. The 50 is for everything (private stuff) or when im traveling, and the slow 63 for portrait work. But of course, the 110 is a better choice for that. I think the 50 is the perfect starter lens. You don't need the 45 and 63 and save money for the 110.
Hi! Thanks for the enjoyable review. In all honesty, I consider GFX for... adapting my Canon 200 f/2, the one lens I use most often. It shall make it easier to use thanks to a wider field of view, add even more smooth bokeh and increase its sharpness (with respect to a whole image). I know, 200 f/2 isn't everybody's cup of tea, but in this case we're already talking about going big and expensive. Even 300/2.8 might become OK for portraits, given it does cover larger sensor as well. Both are stabilized and incredible lenses, btw. -All The Best, Mikhail
For me definitely the 50mm for sure! Don’t forget the cropping power a 50 megapixel medium format sensor gives means u can always crop in to 63mm and still get great quality.
thank you for doing this video. personally would choose the 50mm as well for it's size and now more reason because its faster. the "dream" medium format outdoor shooting street and even though its not 2.8 capturing low light, thats just half of the 24 hour cycle that could compensate with a little bit more ISO that any medium format can handle im sure.
Fuji GF110mm, Fuji GF64mm and Fuji GF23mm - this is covering all my needs. By the way: it is worthwhile to try the Nikkor 200mm 2.0 VR II as adapted lens on the GFX100. It is from Bokeh basically an f/1.6 lens with absolutely stellar results - at 160mm (Full Frame).
i actually have both. I'm not boasting but when they did the promotion for the 50/3.5 at half price I felt it would be irresponsible not to take it up :-). I am having a difficult time deciding which one to keep and there is no immediate reason to make the decision anyway. I can fit the 50R+50/3.5 into such a small bag it is ridiculous for a MF system. I may keep both the lenses just for the convenience. However, later this year the lens I most want, which is the 30/3.5 (a 24mm equivalent lens, and not 28mm as you state) is being introduced. I may have to trade in one of the lenses just to knock some cash off the 30/3.5. Still, if I can get away with not doing that...

I’m waiting for a refresh on the 50r...unless I can get a used one for a great price.
I have the 50mm and have been using it on a GFX50S-II. It's an incredible lens for portraits and landscape.
A few decades ago my first Leica was a CL with a 40 and a 90. With a GFX it will be a .. 50 and a 110!
One minute gang represent
Hello, Matthias. Have you ever compared Fuji GFX 50R / S with Hasselblad X1D-II? What is your opinion about it?
Never used the Hasselblad. Would love to try it, very jealous of the leaf shutter.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Buy one ....... But what do you mean, emotionally and the facts?
@@j204ever5 not sure I understand the question?
Great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts ! I would love to have a 50R and the 50 3.5 for documenting my adventures while hiking.. seems like the dream combo for a compact medium format setup. But i'm afraid of the price tag for it..
Have you decided to keep/purchase the 50r?
Bought a 50mm yesterday. Been out shooting with it all day. Happy with my decision but I’ll definitely save up for a 45mm and 110 as well.
What are the aspects of the gfx that interest you most and make you want to own it over another camera? It’s hard for us to compare looking at images on TH-cam. I know you have used many different lenses and camera, and appreciate your insight. Thank you
It has a lot of the things I like in cameras built in to one package.
The Nifty 50 is my jam!
How about 45mm? Did you compare it?
The 50 looks more contrasty, but I still prefer the look of the 63 2.8
Great comparison but I would go for Neither! You may as well get the 32-63mm f4 zoom it’s basically almost the same speed as the pancake but with a much versatility you can go from landscape architecture to half body portraits.
If you like zooms it seems like a great option. I only use primes.
Yup, for me it's primes for quick run-n-gun and journalism. In the studio I could probably get by with a zoom.
The is or a Leica m11?
I own the 50R and the 50 is my first lens. It’s small & compact. The 2nd lens I bought is the 110. I’ll probably get the 23 next.
Sounds like my plan, only difference is I'm waiting for the 30mm before choosing a wide. For really wide I always have the 9mm :)
Well, that's easy: I started with the 50, then added the 110 :-) Good comparison video.
I have both. once you start walking around you will realize how much slower the 63mm is. speed is actually not close in real-world scenarios. The 50mm is also sharper and with the f3.5 ap it makes for a lens brings more life to a frame.
I have never felt the 63 to be too slow on the street or for other moving subjects.
@@finder2267 even kids would be fine imo. For me it's the size and extending barrel that are the real deal breakers.
It’s hard to choose if you haven’t held one or used one. But i guess the 50 f3.5 wins for me.
I guess if I was getting the 110, I'd get the 50. Just to spread the difference and enjoy the range
Yeah the 110 is where it starts for me.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter so you're selling the Alfa? 😅
@@DamianBrown Used Alfas är cheap in my country :)
What about the 4/23mm, 4/32-64mm, 4/35-100mm, and the 2.8/45mm? Some comparings?
Sorry, dont have access to any of them and my goal is first and foremost set on the 110/2 and 35/3.5. So unless I get to borrow one of those it wont happen for a long time.
Why Gf lenses are so big?
Because they have prioritized image quality over everything else.
Please tell me Mattias, what camera did you end up buying after sellling all of your other gear apart from the ricoh ?
Leica MD 262.
external focus would lead to another issue -- dust in the lens , so i would go with 50 aswell
You can still get dust in the lens.
Sometimes I think it would be fun to go on a road trip on Route 66, and photograph America's Southwest with just a GFX50S II and a GF50mm. Or maybe just throw a GF110mm in the bag too, to have options. Then again, a GF45-100mm would cover this range by itself too. Hmm.
I woul go for the primes.
I love the 50 3.5 too.. the 63 was is probably the slowest lens in the GFX line up.
But probably give the 45 2.8 a try if AF isn’t a a priority.
The size of the 50 on that body just can't be beat.
With this year's winter - spring promotion it was hard to pass on a GFX for 3.5K and a 50mm for 550 EUR
3.5K is still the standard retail price here. After the sale the stores here simply announced that it's the new price and they kept it. Used in stores with warranty it's sub 3K.
You really need to check out the 45mm. It’s a good lens and a more fair comparison to the 50mm.
There are no "fair" comparisons, nor are there unfair once, it doesn't even make sense :)
With that said, the 45mm is probably nice but I don't like 35mm equivalent. It's not wide, it's not normal, it's not tele. I try to stay away from compromises. All just imo of course.
But don't forget the superb 45mm f2.8
Anyone else kind of chuckle at the idea of the 50mm being a pancake lens because it's still so huge, comparatively to say a Fuji X 27mm? (I know different systems entirely.) But an absolutely stellar camera, I had been interested in the system as a kind of holy grail (0 chance I'm affording it right now) and I'm really glad you are testing out the system (even if you are increasing the chance I'll be poorer in the future).
I actually cut out a part where I talked about these two basically being the GF equivalents of the XF 35mm f1.4 and the 27mm f2.8.
@@SiverJohn it's more like the 90mm imo :)
How much bigger is the GFX 50r than X-Pro 3?
It's substantially bigger :)
50mm and 110mm and then wait for the 28mm then on. a medium format camera I think those three lenses would satisfy me for quite some time, but alas this camera is between $7000 - $10.000 AUD and that's just the body so I do not see me purchasing this camera anytime soon unfortunately.😩
Wow, it retails for less than $5500 AUD here and used is of course even lower.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I might have to look into that taking exchange rate into account it could be couple thousand dollars saving.
How do canon lenses perform on gfx 50r
i have not tested canon on my gfx but Nikon Carl zeiss sigma and voigtlander they dont mach the reselution of the gfx lenses but they renders Nice but dosent have the reselution the big sensor have the gfx lenses is rated for over 100MP reselution .
Spännande Mattias. Jag går och funderar på att byta till Fuji från fullformat. Är du nöjd med kameran? Några problem? Hur är fujiservice? Hälsningar @ivarsony
Helpful vid, now just deciding on lenses…
50 because I love the '40mm' look and it's nice and compact for everyday use.
50 is great due to it's size, before you decide, i think you should checkout the 45mm
Not a fan of 35mm equivalent. But if I get my hands on it I will check it out.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i understand.. Since you're considering the 50mm, it's only 5mm difference, i think it's one of gfx's best lens.. Looking forward for your next gfx video sir.. Thanks
I was looking at the fuji medium format kit thinking, man, I wish it had a leaf shutter for mad flash sync
But then I saw your edits and realised... I don't think flash is really needed on these. Then I had a play on my (ancient) Canon 6D and it's not terribly far off. Makes me wonder how these files are! Must be so much scope for editing.
The files are very nice indeed. No leaf shutter is bummer for sure. At least there is HSS so one can at least do it.
Isn't a 50mm something like a 35mm in FF?
No.
Probably the 50MM......I MISSED THE CAMERA BODY WHICH ONE IS IT?
Fujifilm GFX 50R
how about a Kipon focal reducer, and manual 645 glass???? please do it :))))))))))))
I already have two videos about that. One for Sony and one for Canon.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter i know, thank s for taking the time, but i was wondering of the result of going with bigger than fullframe with 645... as always, very noce to see you vids, good day!
I thought the 50mm was a
40mm (35mm Equivalent) ???
The GF 50mm is really compact and a tad quicker in AF. I had it for a few weeks but returned it because I had an opportunity to purchase a used GF 110mm f2. I also have the 45mm f2.8 so my midrange focal length is covered.
If the difference isn’t visible in normal everyday image, why do you need medium format camera? Is it really difference to other format (example: APSC or Full frame)?
The difference is visible. But that doesn't really matter, there is more to a camera than just a sensor.
I'll go for the 50mm, plus the 90mm f1. 25 from TTartisan, and I also got me a Nikon 135mm f2. 0 DC plus adapter... Now I need to sell all my Sony gear that I can afford the 100s.
Hello from NZ
Sounds like a powerful kit.
If you have the 50 you can crop it to 63 but if you have a 63 you can’t widen it to a 50.
True, but cropping doesn't change the compression or exposure, so for some it won't be that easy.
I think the GF lens coming this year is a 30mm F3.5, that would be 24-ish mm equivalen in full frame.
Thanks Matthias, and carry your GR, just in case.🙂
I always use primes on all systems, always have, so I can relate. The issue for me with the 45 is the focal length. I just wish it was wider.
I would get 30, 50 and 80mm.
I would actually choose the 45mm and the 110mm
The 110 is amazing.
I don't like 35mm equivalent. Size and AF motor is not really secondary, to me at least.
Lots of shooters are comfortable with more than one focal length.
Get the 50.
Thank you for the Video. I love your work and voice.
I have both lenses. The 50 is for everything (private stuff) or when im traveling, and the slow 63 for portrait work. But of course, the 110 is a better choice for that.
I think the 50 is the perfect starter lens. You don't need the 45 and 63 and save money for the 110.
in medium format the equivalent to a 50mm its 80mm and the 50mm or the 65mm its closer to 35mm field of view, so the 80mm its "the nifty fifty".
No, it's not.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter sorry , you are right the 50mm has the same field of view in a sensor 43.8 x 32.9mm and in the 36x 24mm, sorry my apologies.
If I had a GFX I’d adapt full frame Zeiss lenses and pretend it’s a 6x6 Hasselblad.
For me definitely the 50mm for sure! Don’t forget the cropping power a 50 megapixel medium format sensor gives means u can always crop in to 63mm and still get great quality.
50mm + its zoom lense for me
I rather have primes all the way to 300mm but it is very convenient when I do use a zoom (at work Im forced to use them sometimes).
45mm 2.8
thank you for doing this video.
personally would choose the 50mm as well for it's size and now more reason because its faster.
the "dream" medium format outdoor shooting street and even though its not 2.8 capturing low light, thats just half of the 24 hour cycle that could compensate with a little bit more ISO that any medium format can handle im sure.
Lowlight is definitely fine with both.
You need to try the 45mm f2.8 first.
If I get my hands on one I would. But normally I really don't like 35mm equivalents, so I don't have high hopes for it.
It's got mojo...its a shocker.
the 45mm
i actually have both.
50mm :D I got it for 500 euros brand new :D
