I am rebuilding a John Deere 4045 year 2010 engine, the OEM specs for liners is, used the OEM soap, Made by the John Deere called JD 300, coconut oil which they supply as the O-rings are silicone, the procedure is to clean out the grooves mine are in the block, put the O-rings in as per technical manual, put the soap over the rings, no soap to be placed under the O-ring as causes hydraulic problems, put soap around the bottom of the liner, liner has a dot denoting the front of the engine and press in, do not rotate liner once in the rings, liner protrusion had been done before final fitting. I do things by the technical manuals so then one does not have any issues.
I agree, follow the specific technical manual. But I do not understand why lube under the O-ring would cause a "hydraulic" problem. I would be grateful if you could explain it to me. I'm getting ready to overhaul my S-60.
Hi back when in the day we had a guy that pretty much all he did was rebuild Cummins 350&450 sc and bc motors. He used only KY lube to lube the seal for installations of sleeves because it was slick but mostly because it was water soluble. Oil damaged the o rings.
Next time pre oil the grooves then install orings but the best to use is tire soap murphys never ever use grease they will fail faster. Take the twist out of the orings very important but your trying that's great good luck
need to use a small screwdriver and go around under those o rings so they are not twisted, also I use vegetable oil on the liner o rings. this is obviously an older pre EGR engine the rod big end fits thru the liner
@ANRIK BOB, i understand your use of grease but i disagree with you using it. petroleum products cause the rubber seals to deteriorate and prematurely fail. ive seen it first hand and all the manufacturers recommend soapy water, antifreeze or ruglyde (rubber lube,tire lube). i hate to call u out on the video but its not like i could call you to tell you. lol. sorry bud. other than that damn them detroits! i hate when the counter bores are all fucked up and i have to spend a whole day cutting 6 holes and installing the repair kits. not like a cummins were i can put a shim in it.
As with all engine rebuilds that have liners you should never use mineral based oils and grease on liner rings it stuffs the rubber, read the Manual it should tell you that in there somewhere.

I wouldnt care as long as he wrapped it in a garbage bag before and after working on it. some floors are staind from hard work. I'd make a wood circle and cut it out and tap the liner in for my sense of security though

There exist a tool for pressing in the sleeves.
Fanshawe Motive Power has got a video on that.
If you can push it in by hand when properly lubricated, why use the tool?
mike mike to push it in until you get the proper height protrusion. Same guy mentioned above have a video about measuring that also.

I have a detroit S60 and it was mixing oil in the antifreeze tank i replace the oil cooler and after 6 months it happen again what could it be ?
