  • I remember seeing a demo of this gadget a couple years ago. I found this red fader knob and it gave me the idea to build one. It's basically a hand-controlled expression pedal. I really like the way the project came out and the device is surprisingly useful.

Well I've learned something today. I think the closest I've come to an expression input is a 1/4 inch jack on my piano, but expects just a simple switch for a sustain pedal. When I read the title I expected this to be a midi CC slider. I had no idea that some instruments have an input expecting a potential divider. You made a very nice job of the case. I wouldn't be bold enough to go for red, but the paint job and the red knob make this look really smart. Synthrotek should make that an option.

Ah yes. It's a fun realization that an expression pedal is just a potentiometer with a treadle. Here's another fun fact. If you take an inline volume pedal (like you'd use for your guitar), get a TRS to dual-TS cable, plug one TS into the pedal's input, plug the other TS into the pedal's output, and bam... expression pedal. So effectively, every volume pedal is also an expression pedal. 🤯

@@musicalmiscellany still trying to get my head around that but that does sound like a fun hack.

That does look quite sharp! Expression rampers are really useful, especially for non keyboard synths. I currently own 2 pedals that you can use one with, and they are both pedals that i have no interest in using an expression device with.

I completely agree. It's a weird thing but sometimes you just don't want to mess with a foot pedal but a slider seems more intuitive. They're effectively the same thing but there's a time and a place I guess.

I think I could do this!! I did the korg S-1 and also the Moog Can’t remember the name. But it was replaced by the Mavis. That might be a good project to get my left hand going again !! Thanks Kale and I would use it with the different synths I think. Very cool

I’m sure you could handle it. This is one of the simplest projects I’ve ever built… but it’s surprisingly useful. Thanks for checking out the video.

@@MariaCalfaDePaul This would be a great project for someone looking to hone their solder skills. It's relatively cheap and quick to build.

@@musicalmiscellany thanks. We do have that soldering iron now lol (Vinny used it to replace the toggle switch on my inexpensive Epiphone electric I won )

This might be useful with my Boss SY-1 guitar synth pedal. I've found a regular guitar expression pedal to be too imprecise for my taste in this situation.

Yeah. That's one of my favorite things about this gadget. It's really precise. Thanks for checking out the vid.
