I remembered this final night performance all too well ...... After that thunderous introduction the north stand was swaying and rocking throughout this arrangement ...... At the end no one could have seen the band on stage due to the dust in the air..... It was well received by both north and grand stands ..... A winner that night on the lips of most ..... Not sure what the judges did or did not hear .... The rest is history ....
I was there too, as a person who did not originally like soca or anything associated with it, I went to Panorama for the first time in my life as a new engineering student at St Augustine from Barbados with my friends, and I can honestly this song and performance converted me to a soca lover.... Ever since then, I'm addicted to soca. I don't know what the judges heard either, but they were on top for me. In my opinion, they won... Renegades came second as far as I am concerned that year...
I was 15yrs old the year this was done, and 32yrs later I still get goosebumps listening to it. Not even Zeus or Poseidon could have created a storm like this.

@@winstonwilliams8217 musically speaking as a player and being aware of phases in judging from the 80s to now, I would say that this was one of my all time favorites but so was Iron Man by Renegades. I discussed this with Professor earlier in the year that he passed away (2018) and told him that the only thing that was missing was a counter melody. The arrangement was mainly frontline, chords and bassline. He agreed and also stated that he counted the tune a little too fast. I didnt agree with the speed comment because I found the speed perfect in context with the song. But he was still disappointed not to get the nod. Iron Man was a little more musical and Pan By Storm was more dynamic. Pan By Storm is a timeless arrangement and that's an understatement. I love both of them and coincidentally both arrangers were my personal friends and I played both their arrangements. Two geniuses...May they both R.I.P. #DrJit...#Professor
Absolute genius yes. The reason they did not win might have been bc of too much arrangement....he went too quickly from one motif to the next, just as you started to enjoy it.
I love Renegades, but they did not win that night. Fonclaire took it to another level. Like someone said in the comments, you do not remember Renegades performance , like you do Fonclaire. It was the greatest!
