I love them both so much. Really iconic.

Justine, co-founded Suede, influenced Suede's and Blur's music, formed Elastica, broke America, helped start Britpop, and helped discover M.I.A, before co-writing songs on her debut album. Becomes acclaimed painter. Absolute legend.

lol she had zero influence on Suede or Blur's sound. Suede exploded into success and became respected song writers due to a dramatic shift AFTER she left.
Damon ghost wrote pretty much the entire first Elastica album (and even then it was mostly plagiarised from older songs) and she stole Brett's look.
She had little to no song writing talent and is a terrible lyricist, that's why they fell off the face of the earth after a disappointing second album.
Even in this video, M.I.A shows her up for her fake character. She was a spoilt rich girl who just stopped washing her hair and pretended to be trash.

@@maxeffort7499 Nah, Damon couldn't write songs like Stutter, Line Up, Car Song and Connection. If he could, Blur would have been popular in the US, too, and not just a one hit wonder with Song 2. He must be pleased that Gorillaz finally gave him success in America, thanks to the hip-hop collaborations. @@Evie170 Oh give over. Everyone knows Damon wrote most of the album. Even the vocal melodies often echo Damon's unusual vocal style and tendency for off kilter, spoken passages (Make a cup of tea, and put a record on)
They did better in America because the songs were mostly pop punk/post punk and not really Britpop at all unlike Blur which was very English sounding in comparison. The sound was much broader and closer to what was trendy in the states at the time. Add in the faux riot grrrl pogoing and you had a recipe for success. They were the alternative Spice Girls. Derivative, lowest common denominator stuff.
And also, when Blur released their self titled album that had also had a more American alternative sound, it went gold in the states and sold more than Elastica.

There's plenty of Blur demos that just happen to have almost identical structures to Elastica songs.
And Brett Anderson himself will be the first to tell you that Bernard wrote and composed the music himself, in his flat, playing the guitar, keyboard and bass and mapping out the beats with a drum machine. The songs were essentially fully realised before the rest of the band even heard them. The only person who had any creative input was Brett because he wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies.
Elastica fell off the face of the earth once there was no musical talent for Justine to hang onto and they are only remembered now that one intro riff to connection that they stole from Wire anyway.

@@Evie170 Lol brilliant "here's Justine playing along to a song to which she had zero creative input" You sure showed him!
Nobody in Suede influenced their sound apart from Bernard whilst he was a member. Brett would be handed fully baked songs on 4 track and come up with the lyrics. but none of them had a hand in the music writing.

@@ValleyRC The rhythm guitar riff played by Justine at the start to The Drowners sounds like her influence. All of Elastica's songs had sharp rhythm guitar riffs (barre chords), just like that. Butler's style was more about showing off, with long guitar solos. That's one of the reasons she left Suede, she said the songs were getting too "long and indulgent." After she left Suede, they didn't use barre chord riffs as much. In Elastica, she could finally play all barre chords in the songs. I can tell these things, because I play guitar.

I was unaware of this connection, but it comes as no shock. Both know how to get their point of view across in a male dominated commercial world.

I think they met at a Peaches show. The three of them were friends and at one point living together. It was also Peaches who motivated Maya to make music. There's a lengthy and really interesting article about it online if u want to read it.

My personal story with Elastica. I discovered the band I think with the movie Trainspotting, There was also a TV commercial with the music (Seat?). I bought the CD on the spot. Listened to it 1000 times.
As a French, I had never heard of any connection of "Justine" (didn't know that name at the time, just "Elastica") with Suede or Blur. I didn't like these bands any way, too cheesy. The real stuff was and is Elastica. I had never seen any face of the band members, or heard them speaking, just a CD cover.
Weird to discover them "personaly" now on TH-cam, really impressive personalities.
