Caustic soda (not baking soda) is what is used in oven cleaner for cutting grease, but it attacks aluminium so not good to use for cleaning a head. The best carby cleaner and carbon remover/softener I've found is Threebond Engine Conditioner. Spray it on, let it sit for 20min, and then give it a scrub and rinse it off with regular carby cleaner (brass parts, eg, carb jets, need to be sprayed with WD40 before assembly to stop them tarnishing) Also when rebuilding a carb/replacing the gaskets, thoroughly soak the gaskets with WD40 before fitting them, and don't use any goo on them. This stops the gaskets from sticking and tearing later on down the track if you need to pull the carb apart for whatever reason. The way you fitted the new clutch release bearing wasn't right. You need to push on the center part of the bearing only. Pressing or hammering the outer part can damage the bearing surface which will cause the bearing to fail prematurely.

Thanks so much Daniel, the adjusting of the valves are done with the help of a 'feeler gauge' - the adjustment ensures that the correct amount of play between the rocker arms and the top of the valve stems so that the amount of intake and exhaust is consistent, as well as making sure the parts do not wear down mechanically.

Nothing on the head gasket, you rely on the flatness of the block and head as well as the correct torque and tightening sequence. The the thermostat housing I used aviation gasket sealant, which is good cause it doesn't squeeze out as much leaving floating gasket maker running through your system. I would recommend though, not slathering it around the actual thermostat though - gonna be a bitsh to clean whenever I want to replace the thermostat. The sealant between the thermostat and housing is good enough I think :)
You could do a compression test if the motor is all closed up. Otherwise a visual inspection and using the proper bore gauge. Its not something I'm looking to do at the moment so I left mine as is :)
At 2:23 you remove something called a wash plug? I wasn’t sure what you said. On my A15 I’m noticing that I have an oil leak and someone told me it was the rear main seal. Is this the rear main seal? I wish someone did a video on that so I could see😊👊🏼
The part at 2:23 is called a 'freeze plug' or 'welsh plug', I think it was used for the casting, but also to remove frozen water too? I'm actually not sure haha
The Welsh plug presses in and it has sort of tapered sides. If you hammer the rim of one side - the plug will pivot and the opposite side will pop out towards you. Then its a matter of yanking it out with pliers or vice grips!

I did a bunch of reading around and for cold clearances I've found 0.25mm and 0.35mm. Theres a good write up on it on the datsun 1200 tech wiki as well. I settled for a 0.3mm clearance right in between haha
These motors don't warp much like engines in a V- configuration pushing high power. I checked all the clearances before reassembling the motor and everything was flat to the tolerated spec. This isn't the first time I'll work on my A12 so maybe I'll take it to get ported and polished in the future 🙂

No I haven't! But I've heard even going A15 makes a big difference!

hi there, the a12 welch plug is a 45mm, do they have a letter code infront of their name like c-45mm or d-45 ?
The welsh plugs I got did have the diameter in them. Just '45mm'

Its not an upgrade, but an aftermarket OEM one. I got it off ebay, may have been the BProjects ebay store :)
