here's my way to learn fashion (the artistic side): 1 - Basics: you want to have an idea of the eras so that you can identify the references, inspirations, and history behind garments, so learn some very basic fashion history and see what they wore in the different eras (example: 1970's hippie movement, 1960's the mini skirt, 1990's, grunge, 1980's full glam). Just remember to keep it simple, you just want an intro. 2 - European fashion: Everyone used to do what European designers said it had to be done, so they're gonna be your starting point, especially French and Italian. For french designers, you have, Dior, Chanel, YSL, Pierre Balmain, Hubert de Givenchy, and Pierre Cardin. and italian, Schiaparelli, Ferragamo, Gucci, Emilio Pucci, Armani, Valentino and Capucci. Also designers like Balenciaga, Paco Rabanne (Karl cause why not?) 3 - American fashion - After 1973 American fashion grew a lot, and I personally really like American designers. Some designers to start with are Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, Halston (watching the Netflix show doesn't count at all lmao), and Stephen Burrows. 4 - Moving Forward: Now you can start researching your favorite brands and designers (Galiano, McQueen, Versace, Miuccia Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Tom Ford, etc). Creative directors get their inspiration from the old archives of the house and it's really interesting to see how they modernize the designs and how they reference them. 5 - Smaller picture: Check collections from smaller designers. people who are less known tend to get their ideas stolen from big brands (example: converse) and they deserve credit for their creations :D so make sure to support them (especially black designers) that's pretty much it, you never really finish learning anyway, but this order helped me a lot lol, pluuus I watched almost all of bliss's videos, and also Mina Le is great at commentary and analysis, and MacDoesIt reviews red carpets and stuff, he's not a fashion channel, but he's funny, so when u have no motivation, at least u can laugh at ppl's outfits with him. oh and Karolina Zebrowska's channel is great to learn about fashion history
I love the point you made about cheap, fast-fashion clothing signifying the exploit of workers, it's something that needs to keep on being talked about. However, and very sadly, brands that sell expensive clothing don't always not exploit their workers (sorry, I don't know if that made sense). Just because a garment is expensive doesn't mean the people who made it were rightfully treated and paid. It's important to always research the brands we purchase from, no matter what their price point is. That doesn't take away from how good the video though, great work as always!!
"Buying clothes constantly is really lame." You're right I really need to exercise 😭 don't mind me maliciously misreading your intentions to fit my self depricating thoughts haha
I will say though. Quality jeans are not going to be made for my size and shape, at least from what I have seen. Like I have found one singular brand of jeans that has fit me, and it ain't Lucky.
When I started to learn fashion in high school, one dabs into this and that for years to see what they like and don't like. Finally, I like my look and I've stuck to it. Fashion evolves, changes through time.
“That is such a good question omgosh” hee Bliss ur editing and storytelling is so slick. The rhythm is joyous and overall I’m impressed and delighted again and again…. and informed/enlightened end of day. Love that
For real. This is only the 2nd Bliss video I've watched (my entry point was the Rick Owens show video that was just posted and I don't even know who Rick Owens is) but my goodness the editing is so amazing. Bliss is really up to speed on several skills in this world!
Experiencing a wardrobe that possess relics with a sense of character & theme is always much more captivating. That shirt you are wearing, for instance.
If you like it and if you can afford it, you can buy it if you want to. People just need to know how to style it differently. Don’t you agree with that?
THANK YOU THANK YOUUU! I’ve always had a love for clothes but I guess you can say in the past year I’ve just recently entered the fashion scene. Coming from an art background, I have always been so fascinated with the back story and analysis of each body of work, I think that’s what got me into fashion. With that being said I’m still confused of how to go about things (personal style, trends, what NOT to do) and I’m scared to Express myself to other people in the world of fashion in fear that I may be judged for not knowing as much as they do. Thank you for making this confusion a little more clear for me. I’m a pretty anxious person so having this video as a reference definitely helped me a lot. I’ve got a lot of homework to get done, LMFAOO I’m excited :)
Bliss Foster, I want to thank you from the deepest core of my heart for making such amazing fashion content. It's informative and easy to understand. As a senior in high school who aspires to become a fashion designer, I love watching your content. Thank you and have a great day! :)
thanks for this video, I personally appreciate Emilio Puccio and Zimmerman for their lightness and 60's vibes and Tibi and Celine for a more timeless approach. And btw, nice shirt !
i have recently stopped buying from fast fashion brands and i honestly prefer my closet now SO much more i find myself not following trends and developing my own style all the time (and not spending as much money whilst not contributing to the horror that is fast fashion) i think its to do with being more careful abt my purchases as well i also just assume i’ll find the things i want in thrift stores and it works! i found these cool vintage levis with fun buckles and pockets in great condition for £8 the other day, i love them ANYWAYS ILY THANKS FOR ALWAYS INSPIRING ME 💋💋
Well this is well timed. I've just started getting into fashion and I've been subscribed to the channel for maybe a month. Been pretty baffled about where to start and how to get deeper into it. This really helps.
I mostly wear fast fashion because that is all I can afford, but I have some clothing items that I've had for almost 10 years. I am South African and in my country ZARA is considered luxury, just to put things into perspective.
Hi Baatile! Thanks so much for sharing your insight. I must admit, a lot of my recommendations for shopping may not apply for nations like SA. Ive spoken to a few others in SA and they’ve said it’s extremely hard to shop quality second-hand there. So it’s certainly no judgement from me for buying from Zara etc. And yeah! Ayesha is the best 😊
I have a problem with overconsumption of secondhand items, I'm trying to get better because I have pretty bad hoarder tendencies (yikes) and I'm trying to separate my love for fashion and my consumer self. It's really hard but I'm slowly getting better at it. I used to get super upset when a secondhand item I've been eyeing got sold, now I get a bit sad and move on because the important thing is that someone gets to wear and love the item anyway, whether it's me or another person doesn't matter :)
That’s a wholesome way of looking at things. I like it! Regardless of whoever ends up with the piece, the most important thing is the joy it causes in its new home :)
A love of fashion is a great gateway into making your own clothes, and results in a greater appreciation for the art form as a whole. (typed one handed whilst sewing a shirt for work)
I love your videos sm. And to add, you can find great quality brands in thrift stores for an affordable price. I can’t even count how many times I’ve thrifted Levis jeans for less than $10. Having good quality pieces just takes resourcefulness and a lot of patience. But if ppl wanna support Shein and their exploitation of their workers go off I guess!
thank you so much for your work! this video is such a good introduction, especially the list of designers at the end is super helpful! you are the best! :))
Allow me to add; find a good seamstress!!! We can alter, repair and custom tailor or repurpose all of your high quality items!! A good seamstress will work with you to reach your vision and they will take on challenges others won’t!!! Just be warned, yes, we can work within any budget but quality work takes time and money. Quick, Cheap, Good, you can only pick two!
Hey I was wondering if: is it better to keep up with current fashion shows or start my fashion journey with past shows? (Sounds like a dumb question but I know a lot of designers take inspiration from older seasons & shows)
Great question! It’s whatever you want to do. Dig around and see what you like. There’s no wrong answers. If you’re the kind of person that prefers a starting place, look at newer shows by Peter Do and start in spring 1990 Versace 💫💫
Yo Bliss I wanna hear your opinion about the techy outdoor fashion. I see people combining salomon, patagonia, arcteryx in a very artsy way. Amazing work ly

Hey Bliss! Could you recommend 5 brands that are old enough to be doing big shows with the best designs and materials, but still young enough that they are not "looking through the archives"? Thank you so much.

I have clothes since I was 17 and I’m 34 now! The newest garment is 2 weeks old and it’s a second hand 80’s silk dress.

My personal favourite brands to buy timeless cloth is ACNE Studios and AMI Paris. They are not too expensive and both have some good sales
They are both big ripoffs IMO
@@user-wy1wk7sq6h what do u suggest instead
@@user-wy1wk7sq6h Why? Because of the quality or the designs? I find both outstanding.
@@DerxRote thanks btw, got me some ami paris sweaters on my wishlist now
@@balaclava__music Cool! Small tipp for AMI, the more expensive Sweaters with the big logo are more comfy and ticker.
I had never hear of Iris Van Herpen, but saw a lot of it at NY fashion week. Her pieces are amazing.
My absolute favorite, this one shirt from Polo Ralph Lauren, 80 bucks but those long sleeves fit and flatter me.
I love your notion of fashion as an "art form"
Look up kim jones Dior shows that made me think of fashion as an art from.

New to fashion? for the love of god, DONT buy that one gucci belt that everyone on earth own
