Leave it to Stephen King to write two of the best, most heartfelt stories about prision ever. I remember reading this series, which was release as a 6 part volume when it was first published. Each volume took over a month to come out and King himself admitted he was unsure how the story would progress from book to book. It goes to show how talented Stephen King is as a storyteller.

I can remember when the warden was a character on an American TV show called All In The Family. You should watch a clip. Look for Stretch Cunningham, the character James Cromwell played. I remember reading somewhere that the lead, Carroll O'Connor, who played Archie, was at odds with CBS and he refused to either renew his contract or was striking. They introduced Cromwell's character, who they planned to marry to Edith, Archie's wife, after Archie died. This brought O'Connor back to work and they kept Stretch on as Archie's friend. 🌈Fun Facts

Penicillin was identified in 1929 but not mass produced until ten years later. Other antibiotics came about later. Tragically, the actor who played John Coffey died in 2012 at only 54.
I remember buying each of the mini novels as they came out. It was so exciting to hear that they were making a movie and Frank Darabont does not disappoint. Even with his Dollar Baby project The Woman In The Room is impressive,. That would be his student film adaptation about a man who considers killing his mom who was suffering from cancer, it was theraputic is seems for King as his mother was dying from cancer herself when he wrote it. It's on TH-cam I believe, along with a few other Dollar Baby films. The Bogeyman is a nice little horror film that still trips me out, a short story by King I read when I was about 12.
If you enjoyed Tom Hanks in this, you should see his performance in Cloud Atlas (2012); it also has an all star cast and it might just blow your mind too!
"Can't be bigger than you" wasn't a fat joke. That actor, David Morse, is 6'4" / 1.93 meters... which is actually the same height as Michael Clarke Duncan, but they made John Coffey look 6'8" (2.03 meters) using the regular mechanical and camera tricks. Interestingly, the warden is played by James Cromwell who is actually 6'7"/2m tall. They always have to make him look shorter.

This is a movie that does a good job of illuminating one of the cold ironies of the death penalty: those with the responsibility to _administrate_ it are usually those who would just as soon see it _abolished._
Darabont is maybe the best King adapter there is. Aside from that and his work on getting The Walking Dead started, 2 projects he wrote on in the 80s are classics... "The Blob" 1988 remake and "A Nightmare on Elm St. 3 - Dream Warriors". He helped create Freddy's backstory in that one.

The show was an immediate hit (a phenomenon, really), and Frank asked for a bigger budget for season 2, which AMC responded to by firing him, taking control of the show and cutting the budget back. Darabont spent the next 10 years suing AMC for breach of contract and merchandising royalties... the suit was recently settled in his favor for $200 Million 😳

Hal, the prison warden whose wife is ill, played Farmer Hoggett in the movie "Babe." A very different, and somewhat strange, role for the actor James Cromwell. Have you watched "Babe"? At one point in time, those lunch boxes were called "lunch pails," complete with a bail handle and nesting compartments. Tom Hanks in a bad man role may be "The Road to Perdition," but he's a good kind of bad man.

It was actually a height joke. Made doubly funny (for me) by the fact that outside of the movie, David Morse is less than 2 inches (4 cm) smaller than Duncan. James Cromwell (Warden Hal Moores) is actually taller than Duncan (6'7 against 6'5).
Of course, Three Billboards is one of my favorite films. Sam Rockwell just completely immersed himself into that role; I always have to do a double take to see if its really him, like I did here. He's so good.
I worked in the Michigan prison system for 25 years. Sometimes we'd get a new staff member with a "Percy" mentality and they ALWAYS got people hurt. They never lasted long.
If you want Tom Hanks as a villian, I'll recommend one of the lesser known Cen Brothers moves, "The LadyKillers". Tom plays a con-man, along with some nefarious sidekicks, who uses an old lady's basement as a base to tunnel to and rob riverboat casino. I believe the setting is Mississippi, just across the river from Louisiana. But it includes a hilarious cast all around and has the most awesome O'Henry ending.

Hammersmith/Lt. Dan wasn't a very good attorney. Most likely it was based on Race. (this was 1935)
During the period in which this movie is set, antibiotics were new. It's more likely Paul's doctor would have given him sulfa drugs, a more primitive antibacterial agent.

It take place in 1935, not the '20s, the Depression was in the '30s. Yes, this is written by Stephen King. Yes, the state of Louisiana IS in the South. It is located next to Texas (on the East side of Texas, Arkansas is above Louisiana, State of Mississippi is on the east side of Louisiana, Louisiana's southern coast is on the Gulf of Mexico. Tom Hank's character "Paul" has a severe UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). I don't know if it is still done in prisons now, for Death Row, but when a new inmate for Death Row first arrives, they usually walked them in, saying "Dead Man Walking" Michael Clarke Duncan who plays "John Coffey" is 6 feet 5 inches tall in reality. He's only an inch taller than David Morse (who plays "Brutal Howell" the tall guard whom Tom Hanks said "he can't be bigger than you" (meaning taller). David Morse is 6 feet 4 inches tall. They built a special platform walkway for Michael (also affectionately known as "Big Mike) Clarke Duncan to walk on, or stand on, when he is near the other actors to make him appear to be much taller than the actor really is.

I dont beleve Hanks has ever played a straight up villan. Think I have seen most of his films, and he always gets a good guy, or plays a real person from history. This was filmed at the old Riverbend Maximum Security Prison outside Nashville, TN. It was still open when me & my cousin got arrested as teens n the 80's 4 weed at the local water park. We were sentenced 2 community service & had 2 tour the prison. The inmates didn't really have much effect on me, but we had 2 go c "Old Sparky" & it's never left me. It was actually n a separate 2-room building u had 2 walk outside from death-row. The 1st room just had a concrete slab 4 the body, & the 2nd room, the electric chair. It was summer & hot with no air conditioning, & even tho it had been a while since an execution, it it had the weirdest smell!!!😳 It literally makes me sick 2 my stomach just thinking about it! Also a friend's dad was an extra n this, he played a guard. I saw it once, but that was enough 4 me!😄 ✌ ❤ 🚬

The reason the actor who played Percy nailed the creep factor is due the actor being a legitimate creep in real life. When he was in his 50’s he married a 17 year old girl he’d been grooming online since she was 15.

Sulfa tablets are anti bacterial medications that were used in the '30s, eventually penicillin took over, but sulfa drugs are still used today in many medications for bacterial infections. He obviously had a side effect of vomiting to it, so that is why he didn't want to take them to help his UTI. By the way, WHY would you call John Coffey "the angel of DEATH?" That is the angel that TAKES lives. I don' t think that is what you meant. 🙂

The older "The Longest Yard" is more "classic" (in a good way) and less "stupid" than the more recent remake. Both are enjoyable in their own way but as is often the case, the original is (at least in my opinion) better. Back in the day (WAY back) Burt Reynolds was cool in movies

Hanks has only sort-of played a villain. Most clear case was in the Coen bros' movie "The Ladykillers," but that's a comedy. Folks will mention "The Road to Perdition," but that's more of a conflicted protagonist...and hard to buy despite being a good performance. Some otherwise good-guy actors can radiate menace when they try (great example is Robin Williams in "Insomnia"); but Hanks is not one of them.
...Yeah-- if you had trouble with the FIRST execution... you're not going to make it through Del's. Could you maybe get someone to edit the reaction for you...?
The actor that plays Percy is a creep anyways, he was married to girl he met at a class on acting he was teaching. He was 40 something and she was 16, they divorced after a few years but he is a creep.

Of course, Three Billboards is one of my favorite films. Sam Rockwell just completely immersed himself into that role; I always have to do a double take to see if its really him, like I did here. He's so good.
I worked in the Michigan prison system for 25 years. Sometimes we'd get a new staff member with a "Percy" mentality and they ALWAYS got people hurt. They never lasted long.
Damn, it must be hell to have that kind of colleague around. Also your work life must have had some interesting moments :)
If you want Tom Hanks as a villian, I'll recommend one of the lesser known Cen Brothers moves, "The LadyKillers". Tom plays a con-man, along with some nefarious sidekicks, who uses an old lady's basement as a base to tunnel to and rob riverboat casino. I believe the setting is Mississippi, just across the river from Louisiana. But it includes a hilarious cast all around and has the most awesome O'Henry ending.
This sounds fun!

I can only think of one movie that Tom played a bad guy. In "road o perdition" he was a gangster in the Irish mob. Even though he killed people he was a sympathetic character. Great movie with Paul Newman, Jude Law & Daniel Craig among other great character actors.

The stock market crash which set it off happened in October of 1929 but the great depression was really a 1930s thing.
It take place in 1935, not the '20s, the Depression was in the '30s. Yes, this is written by Stephen King. Yes, the state of Louisiana IS in the South. It is located next to Texas (on the East side of Texas, Arkansas is above Louisiana, State of Mississippi is on the east side of Louisiana, Louisiana's southern coast is on the Gulf of Mexico.
Tom Hank's character "Paul" has a severe UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). I don't know if it is still done in prisons now, for Death Row, but when a new inmate for Death Row first arrives, they usually walked them in, saying "Dead Man Walking"
Michael Clarke Duncan who plays "John Coffey" is 6 feet 5 inches tall in reality. He's only an inch taller than David Morse (who plays "Brutal Howell" the tall guard whom Tom Hanks said "he can't be bigger than you" (meaning taller). David Morse is 6 feet 4 inches tall. They built a special platform walkway for Michael (also affectionately known as "Big Mike) Clarke Duncan to walk on, or stand on, when he is near the other actors to make him appear to be much taller than the actor really is.

I might bring to your attention the movie _Bicentennial Man._ It's from the year 1999. It takes us into a world in which robotic servants are a part of life. According to the movie, they're kept what's called "three laws safe."

I dont beleve Hanks has ever played a straight up villan. Think I have seen most of his films, and he always gets a good guy, or plays a real person from history. He was in a gangstermovie called road to perdition, but I cant remember if he killed anyone in that either. Great film this, King is epic sometimes :-)
Ah. You haven't seen _Cloud Atlas._ Yes, I, _too_ am quite well acquainted with the filmography of Tom Hanks, and he _does_ have this curious tendency to be cast as the _good_ guy. Near as I know, this is the _only_ film where he plays a villain.

This was filmed at the old Riverbend Maximum Security Prison outside Nashville, TN. It was still open when me & my cousin got arrested as teens n the 80's 4 weed at the local water park. We were sentenced 2 community service & had 2 tour the prison. The inmates didn't really have much effect on me, but we had 2 go c "Old Sparky" & it's never left me. It was actually n a separate 2-room building u had 2 walk outside from death-row. The 1st room just had a concrete slab 4 the body, & the 2nd room, the electric chair. It was summer & hot with no air conditioning, & even tho it had been a while since an execution, it it had the weirdest smell!!!😳 It literally makes me sick 2 my stomach just thinking about it! Also a friend's dad was an extra n this, he played a guard. I saw it once, but that was enough 4 me!😄 ✌ ❤ 🚬

He was the bad guy in The Post and Lady Killers.
Sulfa tablets are anti bacterial medications that were used in the '30s, eventually penicillin took over, but sulfa drugs are still used today in many medications for bacterial infections. He obviously had a side effect of vomiting to it, so that is why he didn't want to take them to help his UTI. By the way, WHY would you call John Coffey "the angel of DEATH?" That is the angel that TAKES lives. I don' t think that is what you meant. 🙂

The older "The Longest Yard" is more "classic" (in a good way) and less "stupid" than the more recent remake. Both are enjoyable in their own way but as is often the case, the original is (at least in my opinion) better. Back in the day (WAY back) Burt Reynolds was cool in movies

Anti-Bs werent widely available till the mid 40s, pennicilin was developed in 1928 but wasnt "widely available" till the mid 40s
Hanks has only sort-of played a villain. Most clear case was in the Coen bros' movie "The Ladykillers," but that's a comedy. Folks will mention "The Road to Perdition," but that's more of a conflicted protagonist...and hard to buy despite being a good performance. Some otherwise good-guy actors can radiate menace when they try (great example is Robin Williams in "Insomnia"); but Hanks is not one of them.
Oh yeah Robin Williams can be a great villain, another great one was One Hour Photo.

Road to perdition he plays sort of a bad guy. To me it's a great movie you should check our for sure.
The actor that plays Percy is a creep anyways, he was married to girl he met at a class on acting he was teaching. He was 40 something and she was 16, they divorced after a few years but he is a creep.
