He is pretending that many poor people have bank accounts or driving licenses. He is pretending taking time off work, waiting at the DMV and paying for an ID are affordable to poor people.
I helped an elderly woman, never having driven, get her official photo ID a few years back so she could vote and access her tiny bank account. She had to pay $25 for a copy of her birth certificate to be sent to her. Then I had to drive her to the DMV where we had to wait in line for 3 hours to get her photo ID as well as pay for that. All this was a real burden for someone on a small Social Security income. Just waiting in hard chairs was tough on her with her arthritis. And no way could she have afforded to get a taxi to take her to that DMV and then another to take her home.
I can’t respect someone like that guy who had a leg up because of his Dad’s career but pretend he had no advantage to get into college, etc.

My mom was born in 1930. Hospitals were far away and not safe for Black women during Jim Crow, so she was delivered by midwife, in her rural South Carolina cottage. She doesn't have a birth certificate and never has. I was able to get her ID in 1989, using a 1940 Florida Census she was listed in. They won't accept that now, so her ID expired in 2021 and we can't renew it.
My grandma born around 1900 in Nebraska was able to get a birth certificate generated based on her birth recorded in the family bible and her baptismal record. If she is still living and you have those documents, you should be able to get a birth certificate created. She had to do that to get social security. Then your Mom can get an ID with that birth certificate. Good luck.

Won't work. The point of the ID is to see your picture on the ID with a name that matches voter registration. Only 17 states dont have this right.

It would be easy to add a Voter ID. In California, we needed to use our passports to get the Real ID state driver's license or ID. Illegal immigrants in Cali can get a unverified state driver's license or ID . Soon, the Real ID will be the only form of ID required to board a flight.
In Cali, voter registration is done through the DMV. The DMV has pertinent personal info, they verify passports and they know who is registered to vote. I'm sure a symbol can be added to the Real ID that shows a person is registered to vote.
Going to the voting polls would be easy. You show your Real ID so poll worker can verify face. You slide your ID through barscan and you can vote. This means every ballot is verified when you swipe your ID.

My grandmother was born March 19,1931. They put her as being born on March 21, 1931. Because they didn't care about getting black births correctly. The Civil Rights struggle is our voter I.D.

I was born and raised in TX but have been a transplant to Florida since 1991. I had to renew my drivers license down here in Florida last year. I had to supply a certified birth certificate to renew my license. I have never had to show proof of citizenship to renew my drivers license in my 61 years on this planet. I had to contact the vital records in Texas to request a certified birth certificate that cost me $75 and took a month to receive. Then another $35 fee to renew my Florida drivers license. These are also essentially poll taxes.

VOTERS REGISTRATION department needs to issue a voter Ids.
Not a whole new ID. Use existing US issued ID's such as State ID, Driver's license, passport, military etc. The point of the ID is to match the Photo with the name on the voter registration. Only 17 states dont do this.
As a child of parents that grew up in the Jim Crow south (more so my mother in SC), my mother knew that the voter ID law was this hinder Black people from voting.

I am Hispanic and I don’t know one US citizen Hispanic that doesn’t have a government issued picture ID. Voting is so important that I will do what it takes to make sure I have a valid ID. It’s that important to me.

That's amazing for you...ID's/birth certificates are expensive especially when you live at or below the poverty line..start adding in factor outside of people's control like my Hispanic US born father having a birth certificate that classified him as "colored" bcuz when he was born there were only 3 options often times only 2..black, colored or white.. making it so that to this day every time he has to present it they question its authenticity.
A good thing to remember is if voting was to be that "easy" & "accessible" to everyone regardless of race..our voting rights wouldn't be the first thing taken away for serving time prisons/jail..those for profit prisons filled with black and brown folks.

Being raised as a white conservative, people like Rep Hunt are loved. My family would point to these individuals to condition us that "this was reality". I had no idea how bad things were in this country until I was in my 30s. I live in AZ and falsely believed that "we weren't racist like the south" because of the "diversity". Through years of learning and listening to diverse perspectives, like this network, I learned. As soon as Rep. Hunt started speaking about his family in the military and going to West Point, and living in Houston, told me he had a VERY different reality than most Black people. Sadly, I've encountered men like him where I was arguing Systemic Racism and they were denying. It's sad that they don't realize, as mentioned here, he's representing white people. He's a very small minority of Black People who believe this crap. Yet, doesn't question why that may be? It's sad. I realize this network is geared toward Black people, but you're educating and growing some of us white people too. Thank you.
