He takes out the red death in the first film and the bewilderbeast in the second film. The bewilderbeast was a king of dragons and in defeating him toothless became their new king. toothless could EASILY take smaug in a fight but i do consider smaug to be a more dragon-ass dragon, at least in the context of the european conception of dragons. iirc, smaug was based off of the dragon from beowulf, and im not sure you can get more dragon (again, in the western/european context) than being inspired by the oldest piece of english literature

i worry that Smaug is sooo dragon, that maybe he's too basic of a dragon? like Smaug is the platonic ideal of a dragon. imagine your typical, western, fantasy dragon, and Smaug tops that. but then that doesn't leave much room for innovation in the dragon scene, if you just decide "Smaug is the most like a dragon, he's #1". Toothless is a wonderful innovation on the dragon formula, but i fear that sticking rigidly to Smaug is the best will leave the Energy Dragon list feeling stagnant. Innovation isn't celebrated here.
