In China at the time there were a lot of people questioned the coach's decision to split the pairing of legendary Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun. But Cai Yun's age was quite old approaching the Rio Olympic. Zhang Nan, who has played mixed double, can cover most of the court and his drive game is not as soft as some people mentioned. His smashes, though not killer speed, are well placed and left little for the opponents to exploit.
The driving counterattack of Zhang Nan is unique, I picked it up and use it in my play and it helps me a lot. The way he uses backhand drive defense on the forehand side too. Sometimes he even counter-attacks with backhand action on the forehand side.
