Thank you. A fascinating topic. I recently moved away from the Valley Forge area, but while there, and prior to 2020, I would attend the annual December 19th "march in" to Valley Forge. For years, I attended the fantastic Speaker Series that used to be held at Washington Memorial Chapel. I always remember the woman who brought a display of rations, representative of that provided to the troops at Valley Forge. Their ability to survive was astonishing and incredible! From Dr. Herrera's lecture on feeding the army, I had NO idea of the distance the foraging involved! I'm always overwhelmed to learn of how much territory the troops covered on foot and without any conveniences.

I agree, this is a fascinating topic. I just finished reading Mr. Herrera's book and found it a great read, meticulously researched and well told. I grew up n live near Valley Forge, and the only thing I really thought previously re feeding the army was 'they did what they needed to do to survive'...without knowledge of any of the details they went thru to accomplish it. There was much planning put into the Forage Teams, and so many other aspects- the mood of the surrounding populace, the British Army, Loyalists, weather n road conditions, the ability-or lack thereof- to transport good and animals bzck to camp etc...not easy. The book is a very good read that fills a large gap in the story of the Valley Forge encampment. Oh ive been to the Speaker Series as well and greatly enjoy them too.
