It's been documented that Nintendo screwed Sony over. Sony was originally tasked with copying the Sega CD for the SNES. But Nintendo decided to get greedy and double crossed Sony by getting Phillips involved. Sony got pissed and went to SEGA. But SEGA is incompetent and said no in favor of the Saturn. Even thought all of the advisors told the CEO to his face to accept the deal or else they would be fucked. Sony went solo and bought every company they could get their hands on. The deal with Phillips fell thru and the CD-I was born. And Nintendo and Sega stubbornly marched to their deaths.

It truly is the epitome of that phrase that I throw around: "All things throughout history, be they good or bad, happen for a reason." I usually use that as my answer to the time-travel question of "What if you could travel through time?": as in, I would just be a casual observer to study it, rather than change it and risk changing...well...I shudder at the thought of WHAT exactly, actually... O.o

Some more games that deserved a mention:
Kid Icarus Uprising: 12 years of development and changing dev company at least once. Yet, we wouldn't have Hades without it.
Undertale: You would think that a game whose entire gimmick is that you must find a peaceful way to deal with the wild encounters (either that or grind them for hours) would be a bad idea, yet Toby Fox somehow made it work.
Batman: Arkham Assylum: comicbooks superhero games were seen as a failure at the time and Batman games were a hit and miss bet, yet Rocksteady came and demonstrated that a good comicbook superhero game was possible.

  • @andrewhaase1826
    @andrewhaase1826 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    Honorable Mentions:
    *Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
-EA was fumbling the Star Wars IP with Battlefront 2's extortionate monetization (Thank god it was fixed 5 months later). Meanwhile, the Star Wars movies at the time were also failing with fans. Regardless, both instances made the fanbase go nuclear. So Respawn already already had the odds stacked against it. Yet despite all that, Respawn gave us among the best Star Wars games in years.
    *Hogwarts Legacy
-Much like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the Wizarding World was at a low point at the time. The Fantastic Beast films imploded and their plans were derailed. J.K. Rowling meanwhile just couldn't stay out of trouble. Plus, this game came from the same team behind that awful Harry Potter mobile game. Y'know, the game that tried to extort the player to free your player from the Devil's Snare? Well, they had their chance to right their previous wrongs with Hogwarts Legacy, AND TOTALLY REDEEMED THEMSELVES!
    *Marvel's Spider-Man
-This was certainly a risk after the Amazing Spider-Man 2 game bombed. But, Insomniac came and they UNDERSTOOD the assignment.
    *Dead Space Remake
-It seemed like an unnecessary cash grab, but Motive actually improved on what was already there. Heck, they even removed the turret sections AND brought Isaac Clark's voice actor, Gunner Wright, back to record new dialogue for the game.
    *Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
-This was the start of a new renaissance for Resident Evil and the wake up call the franchise needed after the series went full Call of Duty with the nail in the coffin that was the failed E-Sport title, Umbrella Corps. They went back to their roots and went first-person horror to further immerse the player in the terrors of the Baker Estate.
    *Alien Isolation
-Given that the previous game, Aliens Colonial Marines, was a bomb with dumbass AI, many had reason to be wary. Luckily, Isolation gave us the best Alien experience with a tense survival horror with the most ingenious AI ever coded. And said AI is on full display when trying to outsmart the Xenomorph.
    *Spec Ops: The Line
-What should've been another forgettable military shooter piggybacking off the success of Call of Duty instead gave us among the best philosophical stories in gaming.

How Mega Man 7 turned out so well in three months with everyone passionate about working on it still surprises me. I'm glad it turned out great. (Also Pokemon Red and Green are so buggy that I'm surprised it came out in a stable state.)

    • @bluestreaker9242

Yeah, it makes sense why ScarVi gets such a bad rap for the fact it took 2 years to develop and it wound up like...err...that, but the reason THAT'S unacceptable is more-so because this is the NINTH Generation of Pokemon after over 25 years: as Joshscorcher said, "We still have Pokemon Legends Arceus, we can WAIT another YEAR, guys!" I already knew of Pokemon Red & Green's troubled production and had a feeling it'd make the list: it really is amazing to know just how CLOSE we came to Pokemon never happening at all. Two things QG neglected to mention was how, 1. in the interim, because of how strapped for cash Game Freak was at the time, they had to work on OTHER games whilst developing Red & Green, which, also, 2. took them 6 YEARS to make! To say that it was a Herculean feat to get this - what would become a - titan of a franchise off the ground, would be VASTLY understating it. By stark contrast to the current Generation, I actually give the FIRST Generation of Pokemon the strong benefit of the doubt being as buggy as it is: we are STUPID lucky to have gotten ANYTHING at all given how BADLY Game Freak was struggling! O.O

From whats known about the disc drive between Nintendo and Sony you have to go back even further back
It started with the Nintendo Seal of Quality, that little sticker of the NES and SNES days, long story short, Nintendo noted that the contract Sony was pushing had a very hidden trap in it, this was after they had already signed, essentially, because Nintendo products had that small sticker it became garantee that the game was quality, as oposed to all the shovelware and horrible games prior to Nintendo, this small thing allowed Nintendo to gain a LOT of confidence in their products, and Sony had ommited a time limit on the use of them on Nintendo while their side of the deal was only for the N64, Sony was planning on squeezing Nintendo in the growing market until they had no more use, which would have broken the trust Nintendo had garnered so far, thus they took the lesser of evils path
And now look how things are paning, Nintendo is by far the most profitable company in games, with Sony and Microsoft waaaaay behind
Also, that intro, finally found where it came from, Kamen Rider... who would have tough? Tough, I am enjoying Gavv, its really good

    Some of my picks:
    Fire Emblem Awakening
    - I know it was a Patron pick, but honestly, considering just how badly the cards were stacked against the developers, I am so glad the game was as successful as it was.
    Pokémon Sword and Shield
-Yes, really. Sword and Shield are some of the more mid games in the series, I’ll admit, but with how much controversy the games were going through, them ultimately being harmless romps that, nonetheless, are some of the best-selling titles in the franchise, is a very big surprise to me.
    Zero Time Dilemma
-Probably the worst game among my picks, but nonetheless, the fact that the third Zero Escape game even exists is a miracle that can only be explained as a ginormous case of the Anthropic Principle.
    Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex
-Changing to a new developer, creative differences, and only a year’s worth of development for the final product. Even if the game is jank in some areas, and arguably weaker than the Naughty Dog titles, Wrath of Cortex is still a decent Crash game in its own right.
    Dragon Quest 7
-Similar story as Final Fantasy 7; was planned for the N64DD, moved to the PS1. Problem is, the game was in development for so long that by the time it came out, the PS2 was already in peoples’ minds, meaning it had to compete with the likes of Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, and the seemingly immortal Final Fantasy 10. While DQ7 has its flaws - I hope you have a lot of free time if you’re interested in checking it out - it’s a game I have a lot of nostalgia for, and is one of the better-received games over in Japan, from what I’ve heard.

I just wrote off the N64DD as the failure it was without looking into it, but you’re telling me it was so bad at doing its job that Final Fantasy VII would’ve needed TEN TIMES the discs as the PlayStation version we got to run on the system? How do you screw up disc hardware that badly when nobody else seems to have had that kind of problem?

Here's to hoping Hollow Knight: Silksong ends up being one of those kinds of games by the time it releases, especially given the history with Unity. I still won't forgive them for the runtime fees.

If I had a nickel for every time a countdown maker lamented the potential of Nintendo teaming up with Sony to make the PlayStation and used a clip of Squidward in a countdown released in September 2024, I'd have two nickels.
...Yes, the meme is never dying; deal with it.

Yeahhhhhh, I hardly think a mere 2,000 polygons would've choked the N64 and that the PS1 would be _so much better_ at it. The OG PS1 FFVII runs at a capped 15 FPS, bear in mind. Plus those three discs have redundant data left and right by necessity. The big issue really was more the prerendered backgrounds and FMVs than anything, which might explain Nintendo being upset as it could've been construed as immaturely putting sheer cinematic flair over genuine tech advances and play quality. Plus it could be argued that Nintendo breaking away from Sony benefitted the both of them in the end, allowing both to keep their autonomy.
Good vid otherwise tho. Didn't know how rough Nintendo and Retro had it at first, plus it's kind of understandable Miyamoto would be a bit daft on iterative sequels as opposed to revolutionary ones, though Majora's Mask was a bit of both. And MM7 was already a half-made game because it was following a formula both highly specific and tried-and-true on hardware not too dissimilar from the NES from a programming standpoint. And while MS's reasons for ditching some Bethesda subsidiaries were understandable to a point, it still sucks how out-of-the-blue they came, NTM how shortsighted they were. Oh, NOW you tell us you don't want to be known for cartoonish games like Hi-Fi Rush? Because that's often what "smaller" projects you claim you need are like. But at least their buying of ActiBlizz did some good… for ActiBlizz; bye-bye Bobby and don't let the door hit you. For MS themselves, not so much.

If I ever had to mention a game that fit this category, it would be Skylanders Spyro's Adventure
It started off as a TTLMMO called Spyro's Kingdom and ment to tie into the Legend of Spyro series, it was supposed to be grim, dark, and gorey but it did not mix well with Spyro's cartoony look, not to mention the decline of MMO's in the late 2000's and the failure of UBfunkies and Webkins TTL sent the game into development hell, didn't help that Vivendi would be bought by Activision around the same time.
However the game was spared as the devs were transferred to Toys for Bob, where they decided to make an arpg with the toys to life gimmick and went with a more light hearted approach to entice younger folk who weren't familiar with Spyro and to bring in older fans who grew up with Spyro.
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure launched in 2011 and became a huge success becoming one of the best selling video games of all time and became the best selling toyline in 2012. I hate that Skylanders gets alot of flack from gamers for being a "fad gimmick" and nostalgia blind Spyro fans taking any opportunity to dunk on Skylanders for ruining their childhoods. Everyone forgets that without Skylanders success, we would have never gotten the Crash and Spyro remakes, CTR Nitro Fueled, and Crash 4

Saw the title, immediately thought of Mega Man VII (SNES). 3 Months! That is insane crunch for a game like this!
And the first 2 generations of Pokemon were lucky to be made. GameFreak at the time did not have the know how to correctly code games this complex and it shows in just how buggy the first generation was, and the 2nd generation would not be as good without the tools Iwata made.

one in my opinion QG is Dark Souls 2 a game that miyazaki originally had planned out but instead the game got made without him and as a result the game got an even darker story than dark souls 1, 8 classes instead of 10, changing i frames and estus drinking speed into the adaptability stat, making vitality into a carry weight stat, so many bosses alot of them being copy pastes, 3 dlcs each with 3 bosses, no invinicibility from fog walls, max health reduced every time you die, dark spells being renamed hexes requiring both faith and intelligence, no pyromancy at the start of the game, using weapons in your left hand instead of right something that would return in elden ring, and a soul memory system that screwed over summoning players for help if they dont use up the same amount of souls that you do and for a while the game was seen as the worst soulsborne game and yet its still popular and some of its locations were added to Dark Souls Archthrones an overhaul mod for Dark Souls 3 to make it more like demon's souls with bosses and enemies from almost every game, and to sum it all up i think Dark Souls 2 is a great game that needs more love

in late 2001, there was a game that released worldwide that exceeded the expectations of the masses and launched a crossover franchise to the stars. that game would be known as super smash bros melee. Their sheer amount of ambition to expand upon an idea that started in the late 90s with only 12 fighters expanding that number to 26 with hours upon hours of game modes cram packed within celebrating the achievements with countless trophies to collect sharing tidbits about the characters, settings and items through nintendo's history and they did it all in the span of 13 months with the ambition to have the game be a launch title for the gamecube. The game's director, Masahiro Sakurai called his life at the time destructive, pulling so much crunch time for the project he was hospitalized from overwork. To say the developers pulled a rabbit out of their arse is a gargantuan understatement. Now if only sakurai would take his vacation time.

I've recently played the Mass Effect series, Mass Effect 1 was eh, Mass Effect 2 was outstanding, but I didn't have high hopes going into Mass Effect 3, I've heard that the negative part of Mass Effect 3 was the Finale, which had 3 different outcomes, that aren't satisfying, but when I actually played it it's actually really good, this time your choices absolutely matter, because it will effect the Characters' goodwill and their fates, combat is more refined, and I felt like the story and characters were at their best in this game.

Why does everyone think ff7 failed to meet sales numbers due to exclusivity? This has been a thing for many many years and wasnt a problem in the past. Just admit it, not as many people bought it as they wanted. They tried to appeal everyone by making it an action game and lost their fanbase.

While it would make sense to not include this given that it's from the same series but the first Final Fantasy was seriously something that shouldn't be overlooked as while it was on the most simple of technology at the time, had to deal with some hurdles at first it was Hironobu Sakaguchi wanting to make an RPG being denied permission by Square thinking it wouldn't sell well until Dragon Quest came out in Japan. It was only 10 people being part of the development team, had only 9 months to create it and as another caveat where alongside working out the name needing to be changed at first due to copyright, if the game had not sold as greatly as it did, Square would've gone bankrupt and Hironobu Sakaguchi would've quit the gaming industry at the same time. Not saying that it could've sucked but it was more like how at first the RPG genre was pretty small and what were expectations at the time weren't exactly high and there were some issues with the game like some spell/weapon effects not working properly and really needing to understand how to guide yourself through the expansive world and fights without the internet.

P.d. for a honorable mention for me is Battlefield 1 because EA never trust the idea of a WW1 game and the total money was cutted in the half and because of that the campaings of France and Russia was scrapped and put that teams in multiplayer by DLC.

Super Smash Bros Melee had a hellish development, being made in only a year after the first game, which can be told by the glitches in the game, yet those same glitches changed the way gamers approached fighting games, which would lay the groundwork for Smash to become as big as it did. Combine that with how much content there was in Melee compared to the original game... Yeah, that game should have crashed and burned, so thank goodness it all led to a fighting game that would eventually dethrone Street Fighter II as the best selling fighting game of all time.
