  • This story is set to the time right before they sent rockets out into space, all the way to the moon. It was published four years before Sputnik, and even reaching the moon still was 15 years off!
There are certain rare individuals in this world who seem bereft of all common sense. These are the people who set their eyes upon an objective and immediately all intelligence, logic, good advice, unsolvable problems, and insurmountable obstacles go completely by the boards. The characters we refer to are obviously just plain stupid. What they want to do, just can't be done. The objectives they have in mind are unachievable and anyone with an ounce of brains can tell them so and give them good reasons. They are usually pretty sad cases and often land in the funny house. But then again, some of them go out and discover new worlds.
Richard Sharpe Shaver (1907-1975) was a very controversial author of SF due to his claim of having secret knowledge from an ancient, prehistoric civilization, and (co-)writing many stories laying all this out. The controversy was not really about his hoax-like stories or his claims of truth to them per se, rather, it was that Mr Raymond A. Palmer, the then editor of Amazing Stories, promoted this stuff heavily in order to sell his magazine in the years of 1945-1947 together with Space Opera-like fare, thus alienating much of the existing fanbase who were into hard science fiction. This seemed to have caused or maybe it was the final straw? a schism in SF fandom that lasts to this day, where these stories seem to have melted into the haze of background conspiracy theorist radiation that permeates so much of whatever BS-du-jour the loonies want so very much to believe is the truth. You know, because the truth is out there, and Big Science doesn't want you to know about it...
If Mr. Shaver himself was an actual crackpot, a grifter or just a prankster making a living does not really matter. This story is not one of those.

Stories of Futures Past presents a vintage science fiction short story, narrated by myself, Tom Trussel. An actual, real living human being, warts and all.
Any and all voices and effects are produced live during reading with my actual voice. No obnoxious after effects, synthetic voices or filters used.
English is not my first language. There will be inaccurate accents and the occasional strange pronunciation. No mockery is ever intended.
These stories are also good for English learners / ESL. The full text is right there on the screen in a big and easy to read font. Read along with me. It's great practice!
Or, let me read you your bedtime story! If you need some ASMR sleep stories this channel is brimming with compilations, playlists, and podcast playlists.
    A note about channel donations:
At this point in my life I do not need nor ask for your money. I do this for the love of the short story and to help promote the enjoyment of science fiction and fantasy literature.
However, if you enjoy my readings and would like to put your money where my mouth is, I would suggest instead to pay it forward to a good cause. Please consider donating to www.gutenberg.... to help them keep up the good work. Project Gutenberg is an organization dedicated to promoting the free distribution of written works in electronic formats. I make no secret that I find the majority of the public domain stories I read here on their website gutenberg.org. There you will find a massive collection of ebooks that are free for anyone to read and download. Most of them are vintage with either lapsed or expired copyrights.
I am not affiliated with Project Gutenberg in any way other than that I use their website.
Now, if you still want to throw a dollar or two at your humble storyteller, feel free to use ko-fi.com/tomt...
After all, it’s not as if I’ll say no to money freely given. Any tips I receive will go towards better audio equipment for a cleaner sound in the future, and I will make sure to pay a portion forward to gutenberg.org myself.
