Knee injury in 99 forced him to change playing style because his body couldnt play like before. Same story with r9. Both were maybe half as good post injury. They were the messi and cristiano of their era pre injury.

Fun fact; IIRC, Del Piero was the first player in the world to have a salary reach £100k per week.
The Italian GOAT by far. Del Piero, with two very serious knee injuries, was able to come back and still be the best in a decade and a half. He won the Champions League, he won the World Cup, he was top scorer in Italy, he was top scorer in Europe, he was relegated to the second division, he came back up again, he received a standing ovation at the Bernabeu and when he retired, instead of going to make money in Arabia, he went to see exotic countries where his family had always dreamed of living. No controversy on or off the pitch, no anti-Delpiero Italians, a gentleman with his opponents, an idol beyond frontiers. France Football was unfair with him between 1995 and 2003 (he deserved, at least, one).

Serie A was the best league in the world in the 90s and 2000s, when Del Piero was playing. Believe me, it was crazy as hell. No league nowadays is at that level, not even close. To be one of the best in seria A you needed to be the Goat. I miss those days, now football has gotten boring and simpler, no defence and strikers can score easily ( organizers think that the sport is more entertaining like that. It's not.) There are too many athletes on the field now, but no true geniuses anymore.
Del Piero was the captain of Juventus for 19 years, he came to Juve on 1993 and he left on 2012 and went to Sydney.
He has play for Juventus for 19 Years, but he become captain in 2002

In 97/98 it was commonly accepted that Ronaldo was 1, and Del Piero was 2, and that was with Zidane playing with Del Piero. Both he and Ronaldo both had injury problems in 98 that they didn't recover from to the levels they were before.

You're missing something here.. They did not emerge in the same time.. First you had Baggio.. After few years Del piero.. 1996 onwards.. But Del Piero gets a serious injury, so at times you have Baggio, like in 1998, at others Del Piero.. like in 2000.. Starting 2001 Totti was on the rise.. However, Totti was more of a forward midfield.. Del Piero was more of a second striker.. Fitting them together was difficult since they both play as pivotal forward players though.. so Totti figured more in the national team.. As for Zola, with all respect, he was never at the level of Baggio/Del Piero/Totti..
@@fouadhoblos3611 absolutely wrong about the very latter part. Zola WAS definitely better than Del Piero. It's just that he emerged basically simultaneously with Baggio who was better so he didn't get as many chances as Del Piero got. That's it. As far as individual technique is concerned Zola was much ahead of Del Piero he was just more unfortunate. To be honest though, Del Piero underperformed in the international stage whereas players like Zola or Signori weren't even granted chances to excel with the National Team because they were playing while Baggio was too, so there you have it, the explaination to why Zola is considered to be a lower level player.

@@danielepetriconi3035 To be honest Del Piero was NO MORE the same after the 98 injury. At the time he was considered the world n.2 after emerging R9 (so the best player in the world among human beings, R9 pre-injury was not human), ahead of his teammate Zidane, who was older. Totti was never considered, maybe not even in Italy, the number 1 or 2 in the world.
Another problem of Del Piero was his not so good perfomance with the national team (but you can tell the same story about Totti).
BTW I consider Totti overall better than Del Piero, but there's a big "what if" about Del Piero and his injury

@@danielepetriconi3035 Ti potrei dire che sono uno storico del calcio, per cui per quanto Totti sia stato il tra i miglior giocatori di prima e di tacco della storia, non si può dire nemmeno che fosse il miglior italiano.
La faccenda del nord che comanda regge fino ad un certo punto. Mai sentito parlare del Napoli di Maradona e di oggi? O del Verona (ok Nord Italia, ma squadretta di serie B). A proposito la Roma vinceva ripetutamente anche negli anni 80 e arrivò in finale di coppa campioni e la squadra non era granché (se pensi alla Juve dell'epoca). Totti non ha mai fatto fare il VERO salto di qualità alla sua squadra. Ha aspettato Capello e Batistuta per vincere lo scudetto.
In nazionale tutti premevano per lui, ma non ha mantenuto davvero le attese e la sua media gol (in nazionale) è degna di un Gattuso. Platini, ad esempio, che è il giocatore più simile a Totti (più magrolino però), pur essendo più arretrato di Totti ha segnato 4 volte tanto in nazionale (in un periodo in cui si segnava di meno).
Dici che non aveva un grande palcoscenico? Cosa devono dire i giocatori di una volta di cui non esistono filmati? La Roma è un grande palcoscenico. Comunque come detto le sue partite in nazionale le ha fatte e va detto che non ha lasciato ricordi epocali. Giocò bene l'europeo 2000 e appena discretamente il mondiale 2006 (ok reduce da infortunio alla caviglia).
Nelle altre competizioni non fece faville (vogliamo ricordare il mondiale 2002?)
Detto questo non voglio sminuirlo. È sicuramente uno dei migliori italiani degli ultimi 40 anni, ma non ha saputo sfruttare le occasioni avute in particolare con la nazionale (e ne ha avute) per farsi una consacrazione assoluta a livello mondiale. Ti ho detto che lo giudico comunque superiore a Del Piero. Però quest'ultimo ha avuto l'aggravante di un infortunio a 24 anni, per cui dopo non è stato più lo stesso. Totti ha avuto un infortunio importante a 30 anni, dal quale si è ripreso bene ( non ci sono stati evidenti cali di rendimento tra il prima e dopo l'infortunio)
e non ai visto i goal del grande Baggio
