  • Hey, so I decided to make a video about my experiences living with Speech Apraxia. I wanted to show people what a 21 year old sounds like with this disorder. Sorry about the video being so long. Hopefully you guys don't mind. Enjoy!
    FYI- I did not edit this video.

    Hey everybody. Thought I would drop a line here and say that I was diagnosed with apraxia of speech as well. At the time of my diagnosis, I was about 18 months old. I didn't start talking or say my first word until 3 1/2. My Mom put me in five sessions of speech therapy per week from 18 months-5 years old. I had moderate apraxia. Today, I'm 20, and if you met me on the street, there is absolutely no way anyone could tell that I had apraxia. The one person I have in my life to thank for overcoming my diagnosis is my Mom. She was my biggest advocate, and never gave up on me. Also, I'm doing well in college, and studying human physiology! Anything is possible, you are your child's biggest advocate in life.

      Brilliant, my little boy and us where told this morning that he has apraxia. You automatically think the worse and panic yet the more videos I've watched the more hope I know my son will get better with it. He has over 40 words as of yet but struggles to ask for the right thing with associated word to it unless we tell him the correct word and then he'll repeat it. Its so frustrating as we know he knows what he wants.. thanks for giving me hope for my little boy

      My son is 22 and is very lonely. He was very young when he was diagnosed. He’s always struggled to have friends even though he played team sports for 8 years and all through high school. Now he is really scared of getting a job(not being able to perform good enough). Not motivated to go to college. He wants to be a gamer and TH-camr but is struggling. I’m worried he doesn’t have anyone like him to talk to that understands him. Does anyone have any suggestions?

      Thank you for recognizing the efforts that your mom made to ensure you succeed. I want to be that mom too and stay positive. I know these comments are from years ago but my son was suspected of having it today, he’s 2.5yr. I just want to be as educated as I can be in every single aspect I can think of to help as much as I can without being overbearing/overprotective parent either as I want him to be independent and experienced success and failures too.

    my little sister has apraxia. when she was younger my parents took her to doctors and none of them could figure out what she had. All the doctors thought she was deaf at first. they even made her wear hearingaids. later one of her teachers figured out that she had apraxia and she began speech therapy. She is 15 years old now. she is still pretty hard for strangers to understand even some family can't understand her but I am the one who is the most close to her so I know what she is saying all of the time. she is my best friend. This helped me a lot I spent the last week crying my eyes out. My daughter going to be 4 and she talks and talks and yells an we have no idea what she’s saying I know she is trying so hard, and as her mom I can’t believe I don’t know what she is trying to say. Watching this helped me so much realize we have a lot of hope with the right help. How are you all doing now?

    • @kelvingerold
      @kelvingerold ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CCAnne my son is now 9, my in-laws funded 6 day a week speech for a few years and now at 9 he is in speech 2 times a week. He lives a very normal life, his friends understand him, though he does have issues still you can understand him. His friends understand him and when he has trouble all of his teachers know so about his apraxia and just ask him to say it again slower and he is very comfortable with it. Have faith, it feels like yesterday he would just stand in a corner looking miserable because he couldn’t communicate.

    I am 18 and also have verbal apraxia. Like you I started speech therapy early on, but I "graduated" from it in 2nd grade. I moved around a lot in middle school and I have had schools send me to their speech therapist and I have been told that there is nothing else that they can do for me. Recently, I have also almost had to think about what I am saying more because I am having trouble pronouncing everything. There are even some words that I avoid saying at all possible costs.I often feel really insecure when I hear recordings of my voice and have often thought about doing voice therapy to change it. Watching your video helps me feel a little better about myself and not so ashamed, so thank you for sharing your story!

      That's exactly why I clicked on this video as well. My 6yo is struggling with AOS but we found out he is graduating from one phase of therapy to the next ahead of schedule. It's so hard when people assume your child has a cognitive disability and they treat them differently. They need people to treat them like every other child.

He has global dyspraxia, so as hard as speech is, so is pointing or walking or anything else. He works very hard, and we are so proud of how far he has come. As a mother I am very grateful to you. I know not every kid with CAS will turn out like you, but seeing even one such amazing person is so moving, even though you have lived it, you can't know what it means to a parent, until you are one. • @DoyleHargraves
      @DoyleHargraves 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ocean40197 by the grace of God, you'd never know he had any issues now, 6 yrs later.
      He had a great speech therapist when i made this comment, and by the time he was 7 or 8, his speech was on par.
      Now his little brother was born 5 yrs back, and his speech was effected by the same thing.
      Both were NICU babies, and apparently their speech issues arose from having a vent tube in their throats. So my youngest, they tore the flap that allows you to swallow, and early on, he was diagnosed with laryngo malaysia. (spelling it how it sounds, sorry. Lol)
      Starting at 6 months, he had surgery 5 times until he was 4 years old, to fix that flap in his throat. That delayed his speech pretty bad, but he's had speech & feeding therapy since birth. Covid and masks did not help.
      So my youngest, at 5, is a little better than his older brother was at 5, but his throat problem, which stemed from vent tube damage as a premature baby in the NICU, was much worse than his older brother.
      We power through our problems, you know. After yrs of surgeries, and spending so much time in children's hospitals, i've seen so many kids and families with so many different issues.... So we are just thankful that we have 2 healthy boys to raise. We are supposedly done with corrective surgeries for now. No special thickners, and speech for my youngest is on par with most preschoolers, and getting better.
      When you see kids with serious, life threatening problems, and families who have to commute 5 hours to visit their child who can not leave the hospital for over a year, it really puts things in perspective. I still pray for those people and their kids. It really changed my life.

    Hi, I'm Lola and I have Dyspraxia. When I was younger my mum noticed that I wasn't speaking when other children was, around the same age your mum noticed for you, she went to the doctors and was referred to a speech therapist that specialised in autism. This meant that people supposed that I was autistic but we found out that I had verbal dyspraxia. I don't ever remember not being able to speak because I just assumed everyone could understand me. My mum fought for me to have a teaching assistant so that I was able to attend a mainstream school, as I was told I would never be able to read or write if I did, I proved then wrong having achieved lots academically and outside of school. I usually say that I could speak properly when I was 6-7 but I still struggle to his day and get taken the mick out of when I say the wrong word or blur my speech. You are the first person who I've found that I think has been on a similar journey.

    Thank you Jaron for sharing this video. My son was diagnosed very late when he was 5,5 years old with servere Apraxia. In Germany it is not very known within therapists, so you can guess, it was quite a struggle. He`s 12 now and luckily doing well and a strong person, like yourself! Good luck and thanks again for sharing.

    This gives me hope, your speech sounds great, but most importantly you have a great outlook! I can tell you have had to be strong in life. I don;t think people can fully appreciate just how much a language impairment can affect someone, the nuisance of having to repeat yourself more then once to get someone to understand, awareness that your speech is different, anxiety, and just the general exhaustion you must feel at the end of the day having to work so hard at something that just comes effortlessly to others. My son ( age 12) has apraxia and a language disorder (dyslexia) I know he has to work really hard at his speech and his school work. My heart breaks for the daily struggles he goes through. As his mother i want to push him to improve but i also want to let him just be him. I also can't hear his speech disorder as clearly as others can because ive developed the ability to lip read over the years. He's been in speech therapy since the age of 3. Its hard as a parent because people like to bring it up, mainly teachers giving you a laundry list of your child's weaknesses not bothering to mention the positives. My own mother, loves to constantly bring up how she can't understand him on the phone and make up reasons (seemingly in an effort to prove its my parenting at fault because i let him play video games and watch tv sometimes) It bothers me when others approach me because they can't understand him. Like as if its so hard to the decent thing and clarify what someone is trying to say with them instead of treating them essentially like a non human. His main issue now is he speaks too fast. I think he does this out of habit trying to cover up the fact that he makes speech errors, or maybe he is just excited. Its encouraging to hear that you didn't get bullied in school for it. My son has been at the receiving end of a few rude comments. I Still worry a great deal about how he will be treated in high school, he doesn't always wanna talk to me about mistreatment. I can tell when he's had a bad day, because he is moody towards me, and typically we get along great. I often wonder what his speech will sound like when he is older, i used to wonder at age 3 and so on at the earlier years i figured he would be speaking 100 percent clearly before age 10. I now realize, he may never be 100 percent coherent with his speech no matter how hard he works at it . Likely he will improve greatly as you have, but whether he does, or how much he improves, in the large scheme of life it doesn't matter its who you really are that matters most! Thanks for the inspiration and best of luck to you in the future!

    Hello,
    My son has autism and childhood apraxia of speech. I have been so worried about whether he will speak because he is about to be five and still has no more than ten words and they are unintelligible to most people. He has been in speech therapy since two and I have not seen a lot of progress. I know this video is old, but thank you for posting this. I am happy you gained the ability to speak and that it is understandable. I hope my son learns to speak.

    Hi Jaron! I think you don’t have any idea how wonderful it was to found you on you tube. I have a five year old daughter. Two years ago She was diagnositicated with apraxia, the therapist who evaluated her told me that my daughter could never speak fluently, that She would only speak in short, very short and simple sentences and that it would be difficult for her to have a future at school, that means would be highly improbable to achieve a career. But finding you and seeing how well you are doing have brought me more hope. Thank you very much for shared part of your life without imagining how significant it is to hear you speak. Congratulations for all your achievements and may God bless you and continue helping you in your goals, in your plans and dreams that you wish to achieve. once again, thanks for everything!

It's encouraging to see how you've persevered and overcome your challenges. In a little over a year, he'll be starting school, and I am concerned about his getting teased. Is there anything in particular that your parents said or did to help you out when you faced teasing at school? Hey Jaron, good on you for making this video! It's so nice to know there are other people out there who are fighting battles similar to yourself. I am about to qualify as a RN this September :) Nursing school was so hard when giving handovers ect there were times where I would just come home and cry through frustration of not being able to communicate as efficiently as I wanted to but by the end of it, it was just another situation which I learnt from and made me stronger. I am with you that having speech dyspraxia (British term) has made me into who I am and I wouldn't change it, it has also taught me a lot and given me insights into situations which others will not experience and I can use that to help others. This Friday I have a job interview to become a health visitor which is a nurse in the community which works with families and young children. I hope that I am able to help others to recognise these development issues and show that they can become a strength with the right support and hard work :) All the best with your future career and thank you for sharing
