1:55 so in radio broadcasting, you *really* don’t want to leave dead air (i.e., silence). there are actually alarms that will go off if the audio goes dead for a certain amount of time (10s of seconds?), so it’s customary that if you do want to intentionally have no audio, like for a moment of silence, you’ll play back something like birdsong at a barely audible level. this prevents the alarms from going off but still has the “meaning” of silence. I wonder: was this slate made with that idea specifically in mind?

What's insane here is how many companies have an entirely Windows-based broadcast workflow (or at least, Windows as a significant point of failure) And something about those old "technical difficulties, sorry :/" screens makes me think that the last resort is always an 15 year old laptop running XP embedded and the only files on it are test patterns and the technical difficulties screen, which was last updated before the smartphone became mainstream

That was from 2009 according to other comments and replies, and they probably don't use that screen anymore but since like all their computers crashed, that was maybe the only one left. Keep in mind this screen was back when noggin was a thing and it isn't anymore so they are definitely changing the screen in case something like this happens again.

if i had to guess, the repeating and skipping audio effect comes from a BSoD on one of the computers that handles broadcasting. BSoDs have a similar audio effect, and CrowdStrike's update caused a BSoD, soooo
That's kinda odd, considering that the computers have to reboot before the bad update would take effect and how long the stutter lasts However, if you're streaming the video from one machine to another, and the source suddenly dies, then you would run out of video to play and the system would have this exact issue, unless safeguards are in place
Someone who knows something here: Typically, a buffer is maintained to ensure no audible skips in audio playback. The audio output is simply actively reading the contents of the buffer. If the buffer stops being filled & there's no sync signal to indicate if audio is intended to stop, usually an audio output device will just repeat whatever is in the buffer - it's no longer receiving data, and it doesn't know when it's going to receive new data, so the safest least-disruptive option tends to be just repeating what it last received. You can observe as such with a Linux distro that has no built-in error handling, trigger a kernel panic while audio is playing & because the audio driver is immediately dropped, your sound device will just start looping what it last received. In the use case of TV or radio broadcast, they generally maintain larger buffers as latency isn't as important as smooth playback, especially as the broadcast equipment receiving the PC's output (which ofc isn't running a standard PC inside itself & therefore remains online) will be at least 20-30 seconds behind anyway. Some equipment is set up to insert its own/an alternate video feed if the one received from a computer is lost, though as seen in some examples here, some also aren't.

These ancient fallback screens are probably embedded in some analogue system that's between the broadcast going out and the digital systems that the entire network uses. Some very fundamental piece of equipment broke, so the final failover from the ancient hardware kicked in. I bet there's loads of industry people trying to figure out how to easily get their current broadcast outage screen ported onto some old magnetic tape or obscure broadcast loop media 😂 gotta update that for next time, because mmw, there will be a next time - monopolies have caused a single point of failure so wide it's incredible.

If I am interpreting what you are showing me correctly, some of these channels used technical difficulty slides that came from a time when they had a different name? (ex: BET Soul using VH1 Soul) If that is true, I find that very interesting. It shows how long some people are willing to use some of their old resources for. But it could be possible that they didn't necessarily WANT to use these screens, and more that they probably HAD to.

I watched comedy centrals (east) feed go down live it was black for 20 minutes. I caught 3 minutes of the blackout but only 3 because I did not know it happened because crowdstrike and thought it was technical difficulties

if i had to guess, the repeating and skipping audio effect comes from a BSoD on one of the computers that handles broadcasting. BSoDs have a similar audio effect, and CrowdStrike's update caused a BSoD, soooo
the black after is probably someone realising or the system shutting off and *trying* to reboot
That's kinda odd, considering that the computers have to reboot before the bad update would take effect and how long the stutter lasts
However, if you're streaming the video from one machine to another, and the source suddenly dies, then you would run out of video to play and the system would have this exact issue, unless safeguards are in place
Someone who knows something here: Typically, a buffer is maintained to ensure no audible skips in audio playback. The audio output is simply actively reading the contents of the buffer. If the buffer stops being filled & there's no sync signal to indicate if audio is intended to stop, usually an audio output device will just repeat whatever is in the buffer - it's no longer receiving data, and it doesn't know when it's going to receive new data, so the safest least-disruptive option tends to be just repeating what it last received.
You can observe as such with a Linux distro that has no built-in error handling, trigger a kernel panic while audio is playing & because the audio driver is immediately dropped, your sound device will just start looping what it last received. In the use case of TV or radio broadcast, they generally maintain larger buffers as latency isn't as important as smooth playback, especially as the broadcast equipment receiving the PC's output (which ofc isn't running a standard PC inside itself & therefore remains online) will be at least 20-30 seconds behind anyway. Some equipment is set up to insert its own/an alternate video feed if the one received from a computer is lost, though as seen in some examples here, some also aren't.

I kinda understand. Reminds me of being a kid in the 00's and the satellite dish or cable would go out leaving a technical difficulties screen. So I associated it with big storms and the sudden dead silence of the TV.
Also the EAS test suddenly coming on scared the shit outta me as a kid. I'd try to play it cool at first but as it kept beeping I'd quickly grab my favorite stuffed animal and hide under the covers. I haven't watched TV in probably a decade so when I heard it at work a couple months ago I froze for a sec. So apparently at 24 it still kinda creeps me out lol.

These ancient fallback screens are probably embedded in some analogue system that's between the broadcast going out and the digital systems that the entire network uses. Some very fundamental piece of equipment broke, so the final failover from the ancient hardware kicked in.
I bet there's loads of industry people trying to figure out how to easily get their current broadcast outage screen ported onto some old magnetic tape or obscure broadcast loop media 😂 gotta update that for next time, because mmw, there will be a next time - monopolies have caused a single point of failure so wide it's incredible.

If I am interpreting what you are showing me correctly, some of these channels used technical difficulty slides that came from a time when they had a different name? (ex: BET Soul using VH1 Soul) If that is true, I find that very interesting. It shows how long some people are willing to use some of their old resources for. But it could be possible that they didn't necessarily WANT to use these screens, and more that they probably HAD to.
