I REBUILT A HONDA CB250 THEN TRY TO START IT 37 YEARS LATER

- In this video, I attempt to bring a 1986 Honda CB250N Super Dream back to life after it sat untouched for 37 years! This classic bike was last ridden in 1986, and now, after an extensive rebuild, it's time to find out if all the hard work has paid off.

@@archie2archie Bikesure are useless won't quote you without having to jump through hoops and wait for a call back, might as well used a comparison site as they all use pretty much the same panel of underwriters
@@archie2archie third negative comment on the channel - thanks dude 👍🏼
@@shutinyanksBennetts are pretty good these days, I have a decent multi-bike policy with them at a very competitive price.
@@BikesofRyeHe’s probably Ducatimick’s son!
👍19yrs old in 1979 and after a CB125, 250N Superdream was my next decent ride. Like a lost love I miss them both 😢😊😊
Really enjoying this rebuild. My first bike in 1982 was a 250n super dream and I loved it so this is bringing back lots of memories. Can’t wait to hear how it rides once it’s up and running..
Very small channel here,... and been subscribed since before starting on YT. In fact you were a big inspiration to me starting a channel when I got back on 2 wheels at the end of last year. The burnout and pressure of juggling everything is real man, and on top of your high pressure job you are doing amazing! Keep at it and take of yourself! 👊
I like that you honestly don't try to hide the frustrating miss-steps. It lends credibility. Keep going 😁
I had a CM 250 version of this bike and i loved every second riding that bike. Great rebuild cant wait to see the finished thing.
Buzzing for you mate, bike is coming together nicely. Fair play 👌
Thanks 👍
Well done , you're doing an amazing job. Thanks for the uploads
Thank you too!
Rye please try looking to Brick House Builds approach to unseizing brake caliper pistons by using a grease gun hydraulically to push the piston out. Note; you’ll possibly have to work a fitting from the crease gun to the caliper. Absolutely love the direction of where your channel is going. Keep up the amazing work Rye👏
Ah yes I am subscribed to that channel, as well as a few others! To help me learn and get better. Thanks mate for always dropping a comment 👍🏼
I just saw that someone else had suggested a grease gun as well and you were having some issues with fitment. Like I said look to brick house builds, so maybe you could reach out to them on how they approached the fitting issue or more likely you’ll be able to surmise it by watching that section of their video. It’ll really save you a bunch of headaches and money if you can make it work. Sorry I don’t mean to beat a dead horse as the saying goes, just trying to help😂👏 P.S. The channel I was referring you to, the guy is really nice and he seems to go above and beyond to be helpful.
@@BikesofRyeI'd use a combination of the grease gun and heat ....then maybe hit it with the compressed air to shock it if necessary ( id prepare a catchment area....when extremely seized pistons finally let go , they become a high velocity dangerous projectile, know this from personal experience 🙄)
It represents the flap inside the carb. Thanks for the videos, cheers.
Thanks for the info!
Your videos are getting better and better , great job mate 👍🏻
Love watching the ups and downs of your builds and gives us all hope 🙏 lol 😅
Well done. Started straight up. Always a worrying moment when you’ve rebuilt so much. Can’t wait to see you take it for a ride
Nothing like hearing a bike run to give you motivation to finish it! Top job dude….
Fantastic dude new shops looking great cant belive ur giveing the dream away wow
Will ride it a couple of times before I give it away 😁 then yes bike is given away as a form of saying thanks to the patreon supporters
its alive !!! well done one more saved
Great Video series, on getting the piston out of the caliper the really tight ones we use to put water in the caliper seal it up then heat the caliper water turns into steam and blows the piston out.
Great video rye.
Look forward to the next one.
More to come!
You could have got all those parts powder coated in a chrome finish, ive seen videos about it on youtube and it looks impressive.
A good tip for replacing the collector box gaskets on Hondas of that era,and other bikes which use sleeve gaskets is to do an ebay search for 'graphite motorcycle exhaust gasket' of the correct size and you can save quite a few £s over the original items.
Back in the 80's - early 90's when i owned a few CX500s i would use car exhaust bandage wrapped around the joint of the collector box whenever a gasket needed replacing, then slide the silencer over the joint and tighten the clamp,it always worked a treat.
I always used the type of exhaust bandage that had to be soaked in water before use,but i dont think that type is sold now.
I'm glad to see you following advice that was given to you when you started rebuilding bikes that many here complained was trolling. Proper tools and manual alone make a massive difference.
Top notcher 🤛🏻
Thanks my friend 😎
I found that very interesting. I had that exact same bike as my first bike
great that it started. As usual, really fun to follow your renovations. Continue in the same style
Thanks, will do!
Can't believe you gave a CB250 such love! I remember owning one when I was 17.... It was so dreadfully slow. 😂
I can imagine! Though I can't wait to ride it however slow it is 😎
Not as slow as my twenty year old bicycle which is all I could afford when I was 17.
@@stevetaylor8698 I started my own car cleaning service when I was 14.... Saved a decent amount by 17. Of course it's called "detailing" now...
@@BikesofRye I have had 4 as winter commuters. Never go wrong but 80 flat out (70 into a head wind) .
I had a CD175, and could only _dream_ of owning a SuperDream 250!
Finally an upload! :) I will need to re-watch your video on how to paint, I've just got race fairings and they need painting black!
Wouldn't bother ut self
Another great video, loving this rebuild as the Superdream was my very first bike I got in 1979, 250cc with L plates and away I went.
Well done 👍
Thank you 👍
You can get a 'Chrome look' power coat so a powder booth and oven might get some good use. Also anodising can give good affects with little expense. Like to see you try. 👍🏼
Top job. Nice. Cheers.
Thank you! Cheers!
Mate to say you started with no experience. To how far you have come now. That’s a result on its own keep doing what your doing 🏍👍🛠️
Thanks, will do!
Your good lady had the magic touch! nice to see it start and run. It'd be great to see ot on the road 🙂
You can get them cermachromed, it’s a ceramic coating that gives them an antique chrome finish. Have a google it’s really good. I’ve had several sets of vintage pipes done and that still look mint after 10 years
Hi ,it's all coming together and nice to hear it running. Doing a great job hope you're dog has recovered from the shock.
brilliant well done
Great content! I would love to see you restore a Yamaha RD250LC.
Mate you’re doing a good job, I’ve rebuild many bikes over the years and small mistakes and problems are simply part of the process if it was easy everyone would do it. I’m surprised you used a standard exhaust and air ox instead of improving running with an aftermarket but that’s just me. Keep it going and if you get into trouble ask the girlfriend 😂😂😂
Spark plugs should be only slightly tighter than finger tight. Don't use a ratchet on it as you'll overtighten them. Also, set float height with the carbs flat and from the lip inside the carb. Apart from that, good content!
Its Alive 😂 , great upload , keep up the good work 👍🏻
It's alive!!.... just about 🤣 we will get it sorted 👍🏼
Brilliant job and to start first time is a major result.
Ps sometimes nipping up an old bolt before trying to undo it helps to loosen it. 👍🏼
The car was a metro not a maestro. 😂😂😂😂
I have enjoyed your videos on the 250 as l had one too and it’s bringing back memories l think I would love to have one myself 😊can’t wait for your next video thanks 👏👏👍
Good effort my friend. You have certainly come a long way from Struggeling in a back allyway with the Blackbird,
Thanks yes always trying to improve!
Well done mate great job you deserve it 👍❤️
Thank you so much 😀
Love your videos. I'm clueless but I wonder why didn't you perhaps paint those rusty chrome parts, silver? I think it would have looked better? Anyway, I'm in awe of what you do so please don't take that the wrong way!
Set float heights to compensate for shorter needles. its in the honda WSM
great job it lives.👍👍👍👍👍
Yes it does!
I think for me M/S Rye face said it all at the end! plus the dog (no name) legging it 🤗 ( do you watch the Superbike Surgery Ltd on TH-cam ? on carb rebuilds)?
Hey yes I have been watching that guy and taking mental note of his approach. Very good!
Brilliant work, well done 😎👌
good one mate
Thanks 👍
Really great project. Now, is that a different workshop you are in?😊
Yes, it is!
I had a CB250, (I think the model was called G5) back in the late 70's. I think it was a little sexier looking than your rebuild model to be honest, but I am loving the memories.
As they say, you'll never get fonda of a Honda.....hahaha.
Keep up the good work, your knowledge is growing exponentially.
Nigel (from Estepona Spain).
2 points I would like to make. First when turning over the engine I would have left the spark plugs out so that it would have spun over easier. Secondly the 250 was geared the same as the 400 which make it too higher geared. Put a front sprocket one tooth large on the front and it will pull much better. I've done this on severel bikes in the past. Good luck 👍
Absolutely love the new look of this Honda! And you know what guys? It doesn't really matter that this bike won't be OEM look. In fact, it will be much better, truly one of a kind. Couldn't imagine better way to spend my time today's Evening. BOR is always the best choice 🏍✅✅
The "girlfriend"? ........ surely you mean the professional
I thought about what would i do, if i win this bike: Probably i would plan a trip from hungary (where i live) to spain next summer, to enjoy this old beauty.
your girlfriend is the fixer top woman anyway well done you are getting much better at fixing bikes I used to live in Toddington thank you
Watch out for the manual. The original Haynes manual told you to adjust the rocker chain by the nut between the carbs with the engine running. DO NOT DO THAT.
Tiss a butterfly
for float height setting you can hold the carb at a 45° angle
Well noted thanks!
Small thing..very small.they are not vernier calipers...you have digital calipers...vernier calipers have a vernier scale on....invented before digital was invented :-)
Now you mention that, I believe I have been told this before 🤦♂️ I must remember in future, I must remember!!
Do an old 2 stroke next, you’re good for it now with all your experience 👍
It looking good mate so far
I also have a barn find 1980 Honda, but the far superior CB250RS 😁😉 I'm only in Ashford, so if you wanted to do a comparison test of the two 250 offerings from Honda in 1980 and answer the common question of which is best, give me a shout 👍 But we all know it's the RS 🤣
🏍👍👍👍👍
No problem ? It's called sod's law ! This is just part of your learning curve? But eventually you will benefit by these misshapes! It will make you a better motorcycle technician? And luckily for you ? You have the natural attribute of patience? (!i would have flipped by now ! Most probably hit it ewith)?. hammer
Love it
Cute dog
Ye man 😀
Are your crash bars upside down ?
Don't even think about DIY chrome plating, hexavalent chrome fumes are lethal, not just to you but your neighbours as well it's why it's heavily regulated.
You need to set the float height.
Try using a grease gun on the bleed nipple and force grease in to remove brake piston.. obv then soak in solvent
I have looked at a grease gun and the challenge was to find a way of hooking it up the caliper. I had bought one and the thread wasn't compatible
@@BikesofRye depending on the bleed nipple it might fix on to it.. that work for me last time
well done that man! I've been wondering how you were getting on. doing well I see - it's gonna be interesting to see what removing all the OEM chrome does to the look
Im intrigued by your choice of house plant
Did you try soaking the caliper in a bottle of coca cola, for a few days?
Fit a grease nipple in the brake caliper hose port and use a grease gun to force the piston out. iirc the size is M10x1
CR parts featuring again. If you're not going to finish that bike I'm happy to buy it off you
CR is underway as we speak 😉
@@BikesofRye I would say I've heard it before, although you do have a decent track record for finishing things. You're not on Matt Hudson's level for being unable to finish things
Is it the CB super dream 250
It's the CB250N Super Dream 😎
👍👍👍
Hi put the caliper in the vice to squeeze it out. BARRY
Pity the poor soul who's going to 'win' this. It's gonna need a complete rebuild, done properly.
Hopefully you are helping him do it properly.
Even mechanics have these woes.
The man who never made any mistakes never did anything ffs
Think well I know that was a metro. Did you put the rubber O rings in the carb rubbers.?
Yes didn't forget those
I hd to borrow my mates Superdream to take my tests on... I failed.
Did you eventually pass?
What kind of tyres are those?
Have you.checked out the 'Chrome' look powder coating?
I have seen the chrome paint and was interested until I see how much it cost 🤯 chrome plating is probably the same price?
It’s such an awful bike it’s actually cool in a way now.
I had a cb100n and wet dreamed of one and then instead I bought an RD350 YPVS F2 and the rest (GSXR’s, FireBlades, Double R’s etc) is history!
never paint mated surfaces mate
That engine would look a lot better if it had been bead blasted.
Where's Nat? I'm sure he'll have something to say about you doing so well 😆 absolute donut
Nat? 🧐
Watching and enjoying. It's always good to learn from the mistakes of others. That's what TH-cam is for (especially my channel!).
@@NatsNackersYard and bitching about them in your videos…
@@alfredtgonly when they confuse a side hustle as a hobby in the pursuit of internet stardom. You have to admit that being in your second TH-cam funded garage before realising that carb floats have a set height and yet still setting them incorrectly is worth the subscription costs! 😂
@@NatsNackersYard dude you do realise he has a choice of whether to put it in the video or not?

What happened to the CR125 ?
That is going to be up end of this month 🤞🏼
The break caliper is no good
I think she's a better mechanic than you!!
100%
She’s not as ugly too
But she should have a name rather than "the girlfriend"
Our lass quite rightly pointed to me that being called 'the wife' or 'the girlfriend' indicates that she is viewed as a mere object. Changing 'the' to 'my' completely changes the nuance...
@@WoBlink1961 you meant to say 'my lass' 🧐😉
Please tell me you're not an air traffic controller
How does it feel to behave like a 5 year old?
QVC for bikes
Float height adjustment is as basic as it gets, too much product placement and a total lack of sincerity I'm afraid this channel has become "Tacky" - unsubscribed as I cannot watch it anymore.
Why did you subscribe in the first place?
@@BikesofRye Simple - channel started off pretty good.
