It's all perfect to my eyes, right there from the start of the video. Just hearing the birds chirping in the background, seeing and hearing the insect life, imagining how the earth must smell from the warmth of the sun and the lush plant growth. Marveling at the diversity of the plants that are so obviously happy together.... this is food for my soul.
I like your videos you are authentic like me. Could you and your wife do videos on what you use the harvests for. Recipes or otherwise. How do you guys do your freezing canning storing etc. I have seen some of these videos but would love more when you have time. We appreciate you both and your lovely videos.😊
Your videos will spread for sure! I will use DE sparingly, on my zinnias I transplanted and in one day they looked dead, all eaten to shreds😢 Put some DE on and they recovered beautifully, blooming now! The smaller your growing space the more "animal deterrent " is needed; without a chickenwire fence the bunnies eat everything😂 Before I fenced the little plot I never got peas!
That is true. If you can work natural deterrents in, outside your garden, that could help. But yes, I have a 4 foot fence all around the garden. The only thing it keeps out is rabbits, and that’s why I put it there. Now, if I were willing to trap those rabbits for food, maybe I wouldn’t need it, but I’m not there yet. I trapped one by accident one time with my raccoon have-a-heart trap, considered it for food because I love rabbit and it’s very healthy, but I let it go.
@WillowsGreenPermaculture our "mama bunny" has been around for years, you can get as close as 10 inches, talk to her, she just looks - as if she undertands.... the young one is a skizzy one, runs at the slightest move. I don't know if I want to eat it 😀 I have a hunch we may be getting new ones, nest is under our back stairs.
@@kleineroteHex Rabbits are beautiful animals! I love to watch them. The one I trapped accidentally in my first year, I was chasing through my garden, barefoot 😂, just so it would leave. It couldn't find a way out and ran right into the trap. This was when I had the dear fence, which I promptly got rid of because those things are deadly for all kinds of animals I very quickly learned (and the rabbits just chewed through them as well, so it didn't stop rabbits).
My suggestions, continue working on the aesthetic value would add to the videos, editing to include establishing shots (I've noticed them in there :) take the time for more still image before and after panning, it looks beautiful at 13:46, wider and beautiful light!), and then alternating between speaking, closeups, B-roll, and being aware of composition like the rule of third (closeup handheld is sometimes a little hard to follow, so a slightly wider lens would help. I think mixing the information with beautiful visual is always a pleasure. I really enjoy the aesthetic of Eugenia Diaz's videos on her portugese garden perhaps as an inspiration. And I always love the info and peacefulness of your videos :). My 2 cents from my artistic/art teacher side ;). Hope you guys are well!
Thank you for this detailed advice. I'm going to have to remind myself to slow down when I'm panning, and stop for several seconds in places instead of just a second or two. I keep forgetting to do this. At 13:46, I switched my phone to wide angle. I don't use it much, because I feel like I'm distorting the image (sort of the way real-estate agents use this to make rooms look bigger). However, you do get a lot more image into the frame, so I will experiment with this more. I just looked up the rule of the thirds. Thank you, yes that is good composition. I have always loved good photography, but I haven't used a good camera more than once or twice in the last few years. I used to have a Praktika in the days of film and I loved the pictures I took with it. I do my videos with my phone, but I should experiment with my good camera, at least for photo shots. It's digital, but it does take photos that are reminiscent of film. Thank you as well for the reference for Eugenia Diaz's videos. I will check them out. Magali and I sometimes talk about selling everything, getting rid of the mortgage and going somewhere else in the world to do this sort of thing. I admit, eventhough I'm Canadian, I'd love to escape the winter sometimes. I lived in Mexico many years ago, and enjoyed that. One of these days, I'll make a video of the garden transformation I did there on an arid soilless mountainside.
I really like your videos! ... and I agree with you: you don't need sensationalist cover images just to get clicks. Maybe you just need to give your channel development time to grow - like your plants.
Hello! Thanks for the garden tour. I am wondering if all day-lilies are edible or only the ones you were showing. I have many plants with orange flowers in my yard. I’ve been trying to get rid of them as they do seem to take over. However, maybe i should leave them if they are edible? Thx for your reply.
We use the leaves and leaf stems, while fresh, from extra vines. Cut them up small, put them in a colander, boil some water, pour the boiling water over the cut up leaves in the colander. That’s really enough. They lose their prickliness. You can add whatever you want. Butter, salt and pepper. Whatever. You could also take them blanched like that and lightly stir fry them with garlic and onions. Now, in Oaxaca Mexico, they also use the vines. Magali finds them a bit hard. In Oaxaca they make a soup with the vines and leaves. Called Sopa de Guías. If you can find English instructions to making that, that’s something else you can do.
I love your videos. I have some suggestions but I don't know if they work. You could make titles that are not shocking or clickbait, but for example a title such as.... I want to share with you how I grow these tomatoes without pesticides. Or..... how did I get my soil fertile enough so that I can grow plants in abundance. I mean, there is nothing wrong with that, because it is the truth, and those are the things that you want to share with others. Or tell us about things that didn't work for you, or problems that you came across and that you have solved. But do not try to tell everything that you know in one video. Just take one situation, and discuss that. I love the tours and the long videos, so just keep them coming. But what I mean to say is that in addition to that you could make shorter but more specific videos about specific situations that you observed in your garden and about your experiences in your garden. It could be anything. For example about attracting pollinators to your garden, or about a specific species that is very useful for the soil. Or about when to water and when not to water. Or how you make compost. Or which flowers smell really nice. Or you can make a single video about a single species and tell the viewers about the properties from that species and what soil conditions specific species like or do not like. Or maybe you have noticed something in your garden that surprised you and that you want to share. If you would make a video that would be called....how I make organic compost.....then I do not consider that as clickbait. Especially not when you show the people what you can grow and what the results from your methods are. You're not saying that you make the best compost in the world. You are just showing and telling the people about what works for you. The benefit from those segmented specified videos is that you can refer to those videos at a later stage. You are creating a library of your own garden experiences that other people can use as well. For example, when I have an issue in my garden, or if I want to search for more information about a specific species, I search directly for the issue, or the species that I want to learn more about. Right now I have black spots on my rose leaves. So I search for....black spots on my rose leaves. It is easy as that. If you make a video about something like that, even if your answer would be that you do nothing about it and that you let nature solve it, I would probably come across that video and watch it. My feelings are not getting hurt if you would consider all my suggestions as rubbish. I am just saying, don't be too scared to take some pride in your achievements and to tell the people that you want to share your experiences about your own gardening methods. 👍

actually, your place looks pretty damned perfect to me. the perfection you are talking about, i call artificial. those "perfect" backyards that host nearly no life are not perfect. i found you through youtube feed. they have figured out i like natural gardening and animals so i get a lot of that 🙂 the one way i know of to make you more visible is for us, your fans, to comment and discuss more. you might think of making some short vids on topics that can introduce newbies to our method of growing. long vids are great for substance and you do well with these. short ones can get people quick info to attract new people to the channel. it is not a dichotomy, you need to do both. 🙂
@@WillowsGreenPermaculture they can easily be a section of an existing vid. usually best ones are topical so if for example i want to know how to grow elderberies, i would search that on youtube and your short vid would come up and teach me all about elderberries. you can have one for each plant! when i watch it, youtube will suggest other vids of yours. after a few, i would subscribe because i like the way you explain. stay on topic but you can have hints in there to get people interested in finding the whole story. think of it as marketing by example. there are also real short vids for things that can be covered quickly. it is very difficult to gain many subscriptions with only long vids. these attract serious people only for the most part. short vids should be focused, to the point and explaining specific topics. 5min would be getting long! shorts are less than a minute most of the time. they are good for showing footage of one plant and telling about it. cheers 🙂

Where they give viewers some tips of gardening. This is very helpful for gardeners to help remember some of the seasonal things that can be done on that weekend. I hope this helps you on your journey to increase you fan base. Thanks
