Strat Super-Advanced Basketball board game plays quickly and easily and is light years ahead of every other board game. If you want to 'see' Bird, Jordan, Chamberlain, Russell, and other greats perform for you just as they did in the real NBA, then you gotta play SOM basketball.
The board game is great, but if you want to play the teams from the 70's and 80's, you have to purchase the computer version. Strat-O-Matic only offers card sets from the 95-96 season on. Unfortunately they never reproduced the older seasons like they did for the other sports.
Played this in the 70s long before even the idea of once playing sportgames on a PC. But I recall that the board looked different. Even boardgames advance I guess. But it took time to play a lot of games. What a difference on todays PC manager games that can play seasons in a day or shorter even.
Yes. I've played BASIC exclusively for 20+ years. I highly recommend using the 20-die instead. Completely randomizes the result. On a few of the Action Deck cards the predetermined split number at the bottom of the Action Card provides an unfair advantage for the Visiting team over the Home team. Just the opposite of what we would expect, that the Home team would have that advantage. The BASIC Action Deck does provide for a Home court advantage for the Home team by providing more Shots, more Open Shots, an extra Steal card on the Visitor side, and one less Replay card.
Great video...just one question...if you shoot a 3 point shot, should you just you 2 dice for the shooter's 3-point rating (e.g. - 2-7, 9) or should you roll all 3?
Did the action cards come slick or plastic coated or did You do that Yourself? i am considering this game and very much appreciate Your tutorial. I watched Your hockey game tutorial anad observed Your Strato t-shirt. Is the actual size large enough or should i get the next size up. I am an XL. Thank You.
The card sleeves I used are from Fantasy Flight. I purchased them from my local hobby shops for $3 CDN. They measure 44 x 68 mm (1 11/16 x 2 5/8 in). I bought one size larger T-shirt than I normally wear because the Strat shirt fits kinda small.
I've played SOM baseball and hockey but I've been slow to buy this game because of how it uses 3-point shots. It sounds from descriptions of the rules that you can take a 3-point shot whenever you have a shot situation. Is there a rule that SOM or game players use for when a 3 can be attempted?
If I recall correctly, there is an insert that they include in the card set that shows a player's propensity to shoot 3s. I used that number to see if the player would go for 3. I just ordered a set of the 14-15 season. Once it arrives I'll go into detail
The basic game plays out in about an hour and a half depending on how many stats you want to keep and the advance game takes me about two hours for a game. As I get more comfortable with the advanced game though it has been playing out quicker.
My OCD wouldn't let me settle for the plain white box so I purchased a complete game with the original box and the 1988/89 NBA season from Ebay. The set was unopened, the player cards had yellowed a fair bit but were unseperated.
what do the o, p, i, and f columns mean on the advanced player cards? som does a poor job of explaining this game. also, instead of calling an x a basket maybe they could have just called it FG.
Glad you did this. Got through a quarter mostly intact. This video knocked the dust off. Thanks, Dave.
Thanks, Dave I love all of your videos. I bought the game two weeks ago and this video helped so much.
Great video, Dave. I'm thinking about buying it, and seeing the components and how the game plays is really helpful. Thanks!
I kept seeing knocks on the music. Personally, I thought it captured the distinct funk that basketball invokes. I liked it. Strat everyday
Thanks for this video. Looking to maybe get this game and watching this helps.
Great Video! Been on my radar for a while now. Might pick up this w/e during Strat's 30% basketball sale until 3/18.

@@dennisedinger2676 Strat did reproduce older seasons from the 1970s, but they were in the original game format.

Where did you get the plastic covers for the action deck cards?
My local board game and hobby shop. They are made by Fantasy Flight gaming co.
The basic game is fun. I have played the super-advanced version too. But, your game time will be greatly added.
Can the 20 sided die be used in this game instead of referring to the "circle number"?

Great video ( as usual ) ! One point of feedback: the music playing while you're playing the game is distracting.

@@azmendozafamily Thanks for your reply. I'd be very interested to hear about it.
I just got this game. Looks fun.
I assume also with advanced rules you can see who gets assist and rebounds, right?
That's correct.
how long does it take to play and entire basic and advanced?

I would've called that a 24-second violation. It was the same possession. First one on Lee then two on Green.
Dave, what is your opinion on the computer Strat basketball game?
I've never played it sorry. I'm pretty much just a cards and dice player.
@@daves1249 ok thanks
I thought they sent you the football game box instead of the actual basketball game box. Did they send you the box or did u purchase it?
My OCD wouldn't let me settle for the plain white box so I purchased a complete game with the original box and the 1988/89 NBA season from Ebay. The set was unopened, the player cards had yellowed a fair bit but were unseperated.
Nice!
You should lose the corny, distracting background music. Otherwise, its a good informative video.
great video ..thanks
Excellent Video!!!!!!....... except for the distracting and annoying music

Good vid but the music is annoying and unnecessary.
Dave nothing wrong with the music..Gives the presentation some levity..
Game and video are good just ditch the music please.
seems like a lot of misses in this game for how many possessions there are
