To hear and see that I made you feel something from my playing is the greatest compliment I could ask for. The diddles and chops all have to be in the service of that.
To answer what I read as the burning question-almost everything you heard here was meticulously arranged and rehearsed-even those little fills or splash accents. From what I’ve learned over the past several years, and the many amazing drummers I’ve spoken to, much of the magic we hear in “great improvisation,” isn’t improvised at all. Good ideas often come from “feeling it in the moment,” but you won’t consistently hit every important detail the right way by winging it.
It’s cool to hear that you felt I played exactly what you wanted to hear in each spot, because that really is my process-I do a lot of listening to our music and sort of figure out what I would want to hear as the listener-and not necessarily the drummer-in each spot. I work out and refine my ideas many times over, and that’s mostly how it goes. It’s a lot of work and kind of a pain sometimes haha but I know no other way. There is a slight element of improvisation just in how I dynamically play or groove the designated ideas in each performance, but the script is generally set far ahead of time.
That Chris Coleman quote, "Control of the technical side makes the emotional side that much more powerful” really made an impression on me. If I want to hit people in exactly the right way-letting nothing get in the way of what I want to express in the performance and composition-I have to have enough proficiency and clear intention toward the precise ideas I want to play in each part.

I just discovered you guys when y’all dropped Let The Truth Speak and oh my lawd; you’ve quickly become one of my favorite drummers of all time. The way this song and We Who Lament makes me feel is incredible. There is a lot of great music out there that jams but only a very few bands have ever touched my soul and Earthside does just that.

Just a quick note-this was actually a full band composition! We all contributed about equally to it and wrote it over several practices.
Songs always sound especially perfect in dreams for some reason. That’s a high compliment, but accurate! I feel so spoiled listening to this album.

Oh my! I’ve been a fan of Earthside and Ben for a good part of the last few years, but seeing this is just as mesmerizing and magical as it’s always been. The musicality in his playing is a level above almost all. Truly the perfect fit for what Earthside are doing. I’d encourage you to check out almost any of his songs, even the “simpler” ones are full of great ideas and perfectly executed.

Haken is my favorite band and now that Earthside has more material I can say they are definitely up there now. You won't regret checking them out.

@@michaelberresford4291 Technically the band is an instrumental group. They have guest vocals on most of their tracks however, Daniel Tompkins of TesseracT is the vocalist here. Most of the guest vocalist are cleans, but their maybe one track on each album that would have harsh.

I am not a drummer but kind of want to pick it up, I can already telly a big problem is my own limb independence, it's god aweful.😂
Don't let that scare you away. Independence and coordination often gets overly mystified. It isn't easy or natural for anyone in the beginning, but if you are able to see where the hits are happening either in midi or drum notation, that does a lot to crack the code and show you exactly what you need to do with which limbs and where.
I'm naturally a by-ear learner, but being able to see or write out some drum tabs for myself often helps me sort out the really tricky stuff. Being able see and not just hear the music is a huge asset.
@@benearthside I don't think it will discourage but it is a loud instrument that takes up a lot of space and E-kits only solve one of those problems really
@@michaelberresford4291 That's fair. E-kits are a good first foot in the water, and many professionals do use them for practice and writing, but I understand on the space end.
