Steve Vai has created his sound exclusively with boss pedals. Why? he has said if a pedal fails or goes missing that no matter where you in the world you can walk into any guitar shop and they will stock boss pedals.

I agree, but my local music shop doesn't. Like once I wanted to buy a BOSS DS-1 and when I asked the store employee (who was also the manager) if they have it, he said "I don't stock boss pedals, if you want something actually good buy something from this shelf" and he showed me some fender pedals. Never went to that store again (ordering everything online now)

Back in the early 80's there wasn't much choice and the funny thing is is that Boss (and MXR) pedals were (and still are) really good even with little competition. Yreally can't go wrong with most of what they have to offer. The Overdrive Preamp kills!

    • @ReasonableAssumption
      @ReasonableAssumption ปีที่แล้ว

I prefer the MXR Chorus because it plays a lot nicer feeding into a Power Stack 2 without getting it's effect mangled and compressed by the PS-2. OD3 is a slightly more open pedal on the mids than the PS-2 but not as easy to chain.

I use a Boss CS3, an SD1 and A very old SD2, I have gigged these Boss pedals for very many years, never a problem with them and they give me satisfying sounds.
I had a Yamaha multi effects unit, it had some good sounds but I was editing the patches much more than I was playing the dopey thing ! And it never sounded on a gig as i had programmed it at home, I wore the white markers off of it ! But BOSS pedals ? Absolutely trouble free setting up and gigging with a quality of sound that is unbelievably great, I don't know how you do it but grateful thanks for BOSS pedals. 🎸😁👍 Best wishes.

Ibanez had a pedal called overdrive from earlier in the 70s (years before the ts808 and OD1), but it was actually a fuzz.
So the name was on a guitar pedal before the OD1.
I'm selling my OD1 by the way. Was one of a handful that survived the storage theft of all my stuff, and since insurance wouldn't pay, having TS9, SD1 and OD1, when I need more stuff, the most valuable one has to go since the SD1 is close enough
There were probably close to 30 boss pedals in my collection at the time. Love these things. And a few of them were rare and valuable :(. My first one ever was a BF2 and actually that one was in the bag with 6 other pedals that survived, including CE2 as well. It could have been worse, at least I still have those.

In love with Boss pedals because they're real tools for real musicians. But I have to admit, after owning a few DS1s, I loved them all but a few weeks ago I got my first Japanese DS1... The first 10 minutes it was impossible for me to hear any difference between this and the made in Taiwan one but, boy, you start to roll off the volume knob on your guitar, your valves get hotter and voilà, what a pedal! Oh, God, the first time I got a pedal capable of doing what my lovely OCD does, shining in dynamics, being warm and balanced, aggressive and subtle... Anyway, my lovely OD3 is another example of why Boss is a legend.

8:26 The Colorsound Overdriver came to market in 1971; 8:34 Tube Screamers were not a thing in 1977. The TS808 is a copy of the OD-1 with added tone control and symmetrical clipping. My first Boss pedal was a DS1 which I still keep at home.
In mid 90's I started to play bass and I used several fx brands or no pedals at all.
This year I decided to get a different overdriven bass tone and I got an used ODB3. This pedal has a bad reputation but I wanted to try it anyways. I was shocked because it's a very versatile bass overdrive if you know what are you doing with the knobs. For high gain overdrive bass tone it lacks of the clarity of the Darkglass stuff ( I use a B3K in my metal band) but it could do the job.
My last Boss pedal was a BF3 flanger which I got used a couple of months ago. After looking for different options including other brands, the Boss flanger was the only which gave me the sound I hear in my head.
Boss pedals are built to last, sound good and you can get them for a reasonable price in the used market.

I used to have this sound that a lot of people liked where I’d mix bd-2 and a rat distortion, I guess people just liked it because the bd-2 was super bassy and the rat was so trebley that it just worked. Actually know that I think about it, I’m gonna go find my bd-2 and rat and get some kickass tones again

Boss DD3, the one thing I'd want changed (now that there is a tap tempo version) is a subdivision option :) It's last in my pedal chain, with my reverb, phaser and another delay in front of it.

I’ve been down the boutique rabbit hole and come out the other end. Sold more boutique pedals I can care to remember. Never sold a Boss pedal. I’ve realised that most boutique pedals are based on the industry standard sounds that Boss has laid the foundations for. BD2 is my fav pedal of all time and I bought the OD3 yesterday. £77 for a pedal that is an absolute killer OD sound. Stacks great with the BD2. I would like to have seen a waza / special edition of the TR2. Reissue of the OD 1 is vastly overdue.

SD-1. Got last fall for $39 new! It sounds just as good as most $100 distortion pedals.. I was glad is was so cheap, but thats not why I got it. I got it only for how it sounds.. The Boss Power Stack is great too.. and no one ever mentions it! I got that one last fall, too. These 2 are the very best of Boss distortion pedals! I tried so many, and listened to literally ALL Boss dist pedals before I got those 2. SD-1, and Power Stack..

Had a chorus in the 80’s which was great now have an RC3 looper and DD8 delay which I think are great also have the ML2 distortion in case instant hyper drive is needed for one small bit the best thing is they are so tough and didn’t know till now about the design to not hit knobs but makes sense as I have kicked a setting change on other pedals and made a real sonic mess

I'm mostly a keys player who plays a little guitar at intermediate level for my own recordings. I play a MIM HSS Strat into a Roland JC22. I recently purchased a Boss BCB-60 case which I am gradually populating with Boss pedals. I already have a CS-3 compressor, an SD-1 overdrive and a TR-2 tremolo. I want to add a TU-3 tuner, a DS-1 distortion and a DD-7 delay. If I don't get the DS-1, I might go for the BF-3 flanger instead. We'll see. Back in the 80s, when I first tried to learn to play guitar, I had a Boss flanger and a chorus.

I play hard thrashy stuff . My favorite boss pedal is the Turbo Distortion, DS2 . I still use it all the time as a clean boost along side of either the Boss SD1 or a TS9. But I just got a Maxon. Super Tube pro+. Which is like a TS9 in steroids.

I think Roland and Boss together can do and remain doing amazing things in the digital world. Im hoping Boss will send me gear to review one day. I love the tones on the GT1 alll of it. Hahah. Then again I'm still a new youtuber.

The other thing I heard Billy Duffy of the Cult say in an interview was that if they're on tour somewhere and a pedal breaks (which rarely happens), or the gear gets delayed, pretty much every store has them, so it's easy to get a replacements.
