‘Assimilate’ - Skinny Puppy 2009 ‘In Solvent See’ tour Another live recording from my own private FOH archive… ‘Assimilate’ is by far, my favourite LIVE Skinny Puppy song, and this recording is an EPIC example why!!! I have no idea what show this recording is from, but it honestly doesn’t matter…the guys NAIL this one every time 🤟🏻 I can say it’s from the US leg of the 2009 In Solvent See tour, just based on where it is in the set. From my mix position at FOH, it doesn’t get much better than a three piece band hitting the stage and performing a song like Assimilate. If SP was asked to play just one song…THIS IS IT (for me) hahaha 🤟🏻🔥 There are some awesome things going on here… 💥The PA sounded incredible (which rules out SD lol) 💥Ogre sings this one ‘unmasked’, which means he’s just singing freely into his handheld Beta58, love his vocal sound 😊🤟🏻 💥Every time Assimilate starts, the crowd just goes crazy, and it feeds right back to the guys on stage…does it ever show in this recording! Ogre, cEvin, and Justin are all masters of their crafts, what a KILLER performance 🙏❤️ 🎤hiwatt’s random tour notes… In all the live touring I’ve done with SP, I’ve personally witnessed Ogre get up and perform like this with a FEVER that would have had me floored 😷…I’m talking about flat out SICK, with uncontrollable shakes, etc.! We once landed in Chicago, with a day off from 5-in-a-row…I woke up SO sick with the flu, I somehow ended up in my hotel room where I proceeded to sleep for 20 hours! I can’t even imagine having to wake up midway, and perform during an experience like that, yet I witnessed Ogre do it more than once 😳 This is one aspect of touring, that has always had me hold professional musicians in such high regard, the fact that the show MUST go on, and they’ll literally wake from the dead to get it done…most often undetected!!! This probably isn’t one of those nights, but in my own experience, I wouldn’t know the difference 🙏🤟🏻 I hope you like this live recording of Assimilate as much as I do 😆 hw
Thank you Ken ...back in 1990, when I first found Skinny Puppy, people I tried to show this sound to, were a little apprehensive to the "different" style of music they were hearing... To me, it was a second heart beat. Cheers!
Oh yes. This song completely changed my view on music forever the first time I heard it! 🖤 And what a great live version! Thank you so much, Ken, for this and for everything you share! Much appreciated! ❤️
Epic indeed! This track, along with Worlock, always gets the crowd on another level. When that synergy between the crowd and the band goes off it’s just magic and your recording excellently captures this. Thank you for sharing!
I have to agree. Assimilate is tops followed very closely by Smothered Hope. Thank you, Mr. Marshall, for releasing these recordings. I always saw your name in the liner notes years ago. When I saw that you had a You Tube channel I could finally put a face on the name. I subbed right away and have not been disappointed. I have been watching for a bit and still have to watch a lot more of your vid's. Digging the Frontline Assembly stuff too! Keep it coming, my friend :)
One of the few songs from skinny puppy I can play on my board. Easy chords but here's the thing I wouldn't of thought to use them this way. Cevin is very creative and patient with his progressions. I made sure I bought a digi copy of this live performance. Nice job on the sound quality ken. Worth every penny.
YES! Thanks so much for putting this up and also all the other videos you produce that have given great insight into my personal favorite industrial band of all times. Super inspirational!
thank you, Ken, Ogre, cEvin, and Justin. this is just magic. i saw this tour in PDX, after first learning of SP in 1989, and this was my first live SP experience. seared onto my memory, i'll never forget it. thanks for helping to make the evening so memorable, Ken! cheers!!
I live in PDX too, was that the show that was in NW on like Everett and 18th? my first Puppy show was at the FOX theater for TDP, I have some rather epic stories about the two times I briefly hung out with them..
@@abrasionequation4632 it was at the Wonder Ballroom =) i consider myself to be incredibly lucky and privileged to have attended. would love to hear your stories over a nice beverage or two someday. maybe at the next PDX show!
Sounds million times better than when I watched "SP" on Sziget festival 2005. Ok, Sziget was an open air festival as I assume this was not...but, anyway! Great job Ken!
I found out a while back that the person that sells me beer at my local BP also does music production and she recently showed me a picture of the new mixing console she bought and speakers. She sunk about a 120,000 $ into her new setup!!! I Was Blown Away!!!
Saw this tour in San Dimas I think? It was a little place and the first time I ever saw skinny puppy and didn’t feel like I got beat up because of how rowdy the crowd was. I’m to the point now I can’t stand long enough to go to concerts which sucks.
fuck tve menories 🤘😩🤘 this swingy groove was then tributed all through the 90's i. industrial/ebm throughoutcthe world ... but only the good stuff like leaether strip pitchfork etc ;) Thanks again KEN HM 😌
Thanks for this Ken, good live recordings from this era are hard to find. If you post another SP live track in the future, I'd without doubt love to hear Pasturn from 2014. It's just too awesome live to not be able to listen to it! Also, maybe some of the tracks from 2009's tour which did not make the cut onto the absurdly shortened "Bootlegged, Broke, and In Solvent Seas" album? You can help us catch 'em all!
@@hiwattmarshall Thank you so much, Ken! I can remember the bass literally hurting my stomach but being PRISTINELY CLEAR - I think that's an amazing feat personally!
Aside from Dwayne Goettel, you quite literally are the only person I could ask this question of and get a correct answer... the opening bass line... The repetitive octave switching bass that lays down the beat for the song... Is that sequenced MIDI notes fired off into the synth, or is it actually an analog synth wave that is regenerating to the beat at tempo? Thank you! You guys fucking ROCK my face loose!

In my 33 years ( yes THAT number)
of loving SP this is the Best version of Assimilate I have ever heard , thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing these notes Ken !!!
I need a new Skinny Puppy album and tour after everything we have been through the past few years. I feel like it would be monumental.
Right!
Well at least a tour was announced for 2023 i believe after they cancelled their shows this year. A new album would be awesome too.
@@derkernspalter I didn't know they anounced a tour!
Hope they come to Portland
Assimilate is what started my musical love affair with SP 37 years ago. This is a killer track. The production is exsquisite.
God, it still gives me the good chills.

absolutely brilliant live mix and a fantastic performance! thanks for sharing Ken
Had to remind myself this was a live performance because it sounds so good! My God they killed it here and you have them sounding amazing as always.

First song I ever heard by SP in 1987. I was hooked for life.
So polite..clean and sweet...

come to think of it... all the euro ebm i used to listen most to had that euro new beat vibe BUT always Vancouver in the genes 🤔

MMmm. Delicious.
These are phenomenal!
Another great live mix. Hope this leads to a live from the vault series on vinyl. A new mix of puppy Gristle would be awesome.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!!

I'm so sorry your health is failing you brother. Music takes us to places we can all share together, time and space can't keep that from us.
is it just me, or do these recordings sound better than the "Live bootlegged broke" album?
is it safe?
the perpetual question!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't Ogre perform with a broken jaw after being beaten up before a show once?
Thanks for this Ken, good live recordings from this era are hard to find.

Ain't it Dead Yet? Nice :)
I can't explain why but in my head this is always the Popeye beat. I just can picture it. Don't judge me.
What?
