  • Dungeons & Dragons is the leading cause of Satanism, racism, sexism, cannibalism, suicide, murder, and creativity among the young teens seduced by the evil of this so-called game. This scandal is so massive, so unforgivable, nothing will ever save D&D! Dungeons & Dragons will be gone forever!
Also, maybe we should all stop listening to people trying to create problems where none previously existed?

Hey friends! I hope my satire was taken for what it is and nothing more. I wanted to turn this into something positive by reflecting on my 40 years playing D&D and all the times I thought the game was going to crash and burn. I've been there and I understand the passion. I don't wish to disparage any single individual or their views. Thanks for hearing my video's message. I appreciate you all!

As someone who has been playing D&D for 22 years, I thought your video was interesting and concise. I have played AD&D 2nd edition, 3rd edition and 3.5 mostly, admittedly I have only slightly dabbled in 4th and 5th edition. Now even if somehow the published franchise itself dies, I still have my books so the game will never die for me. Good job on this interesting video, always glad to hear from others more learned in the arts of Gygax and his ilk. Anyways, that's my bit. Make sure to have fun, especially when making doomsday conspiracies about your favorite game. =^_^=

@@welovettrpgs You mean I have to put away my ram's horns head dress and my black robes for when I run games?
Seriously though, you're right D&D will be fine. WOTC and Hasbro may not be. They've been up to some really dumb (Coughs--ah-hum) stuff---lately. While D&D has been one of the few bright spots in Hasbro earnings reports, it's also hemorrhaging cash. D&D beyond was purchased back in 22 for just under 150 million and it's making 3 million a quarter. The D&D TV roll out has been a total debacle. Then there is the sale of Hasbro's entertainment studio for 500 million when they bought it for 4 billion. And toy sales in the other lines have tanked. Christmas is expected to be exceptionally disappointing. I don't think they will file for bankruptcy tomorrow or in the very near future, but they can't survive this kind of bleeding very long. They've really put all their eggs in the VTT, digital walled garden basket, and if that's disappointing the way the D&D movie was, I think you'll see Hasbro start selling off IPs. Hopefully D&D will be one of them, and someone who actually cares about the game buys it. I think the WOTC brass have shown themselves to be poor stewards of the game. They don't hate you---they just want your wallet. Beyond that, they really don't care one way or the other.
Even if the VTT roll out happens without major hicups and is a major hit, and D&D within WOTC's digital walled garden basically becomes a WoW clone that's powered by AI DMs, (And that's clearly the direction they want to go) I do think there will be a vibrant 5e tabletop folk tradition of D&D spring up, becoming it's own version of an OSR game, that's a lot more skeptical of rules coming out from officialdom. That will be a very healthy thing for the 5e community.

I grew up pretty strictly Catholic, and I was playing during the whole Satanic panic. I remember my Dad was naturally concerned about it, none of us are immune to propaganda. So he asked to see my books and asked me questions about the game. So I got to nerd out to my Dad about my favorite hobby. The next couple of sessions he kinda sat in and watched me and my friends play. I remember his attitude really changed during the second time when he was asking us some questions and I said D&D was like Stratego (he was a huge fan of Stratego) but you control just one guy not an army. I told him about my Paladin, Sir Berengir the Just, smiter of Evil! (I was a kid alright) He just nodded, said have fun and when back to his paper. He never brought it up again but he would ask to look through the books sometimes and ask questions if he thought something was questionable.

I was working for an advertising company during the suicide scandal, and there were two things you didn't mention-firstly, the police exonerated the game and ignored any such ties almost immediately, and second-sales were through the roof at TSR, to the extent it was said in the office that if we hit upon a mass teenage suicide site, slipping a copy of whatever product would boost sales enough to be worth despoiling a crime scene.

One of the things that will keep D&D going is the community. Businesses, if left to their own devices, will eventually do business things. They’ll fail, or do egregious things.
But the point is that D&D isn’t really a product, when you really think about it (for example, there are D&D groups in prisons, where D&D materials are certainly not permitted).
At its heart, D&D is a concept, an experiential ‘vibe’.
It’s not an app, or a library of books, or a collection of miniatures. It’s your mind, and all the things you can do with it. You can play it online with sophisticated software and theatrical set-dressing; you can play it with a notepad and a few coins or a paper cup full of numbers written on bits of paper.
YOU are the important part. You’re not a product, are you?

This is exactly the reason that D&D is NOT for everyone. The idiocy of 'inclusion trumps everything else' is dangerous when it comes to this.
People who cannot separate fantasy from reality have no business being at a D&D (or any other immersive RPG) table.
As you well point out, the incidents in question were really due to the mental illness of the participants, not the game or any element of the game, itself.
I'll actually be doing a video on exactly this. Well done!
The REAL reason, btw - for all the 'clickbait' titles is that those videos get a lot more traffic than other videos, so, whilst we all say we hate those clickbait titles, we seem to be clicking on them in droves...

If we want it to change, we have to change the behaviour of the consumers. I am not sure how to accomplish that...
I'm about to become a content creator, so, I'd love to know how to change that trend towards the scandals - I, personally, feel the community as a whole benefits far more from content that isn't "the latest D&D scandal just got worse" - and, is rather more like your content - centered around 'how to improve your personal gaming experience'

graphics are really improving on your videos. Good comprehensive video on stuff you and I lived through. As with any art form the concept of mimesis (that life imitates art) is reactionary. Most psychologists and literary scholars find art cathartic (releasing interior emotions without the need to enact them in the real world.)

We completely agree on that - in fact I have a video outline describing how throughout all of human history when something reaches its peak of popularity it is followed by its downfall. (This is true of products, bands, hobbies, and civilizations, etc ...). D&D was never meant to appeal to the masses and trying to force it to will be the thing I do fear will (or is) destroying it. I also believe a LOT of the people currently playing D&D don't even like D&D - they're just doing it because it's popular atm. This is really bad for the game because you have a bunch of people who don't even like D&D, won't be playing D&D in a couple years - making massive changes to the game that true fans will be stuck with . Just my opinion on that.

The current knee jerk controversy to looks like more and more people are using the Virtual world. Board games can be played online with groups talking and playing over the site. The virtual D&d will pull in those who love using the virtual media. No doubt once the initial kick off has died down - those who were opposed it will end up using it and liking it esp if there group is split up or has a group made from friends from different states.
