Straw ability comes from the fruit. The cards comes from his. So every single person eating the same fruit grants u the same ability but every one will have different some sort of playstyle or battle technique.
Hawkins' way of fighting is with his cards and his devil fruit. Hawkins uses his cards because he is a mage and he trusts his cards so much that his decision are based on what card he draws. His df, the Straw-Straw fruit allows himself to use voodoo dolls as extra lives and he also has the ability to become a straw-man hinself.
Hawkins uses a straw doll. This has been used in ancient Japanese rituals to cast curses. A nail is hammered into a straw doll that represents the person you want to curse. The part of the body that is hammered into is cursed.
You can notice how the pacing gets worse by stretching the scenes so much lol

Man... Wano is pacing hell. That Hawkins transformation was crazy. Would be a decent arc if it weren't paced so bad

Hawkins A wizard whose power lies in his magic. He has the straw fruit, but his power lies in magic.
Hawkins fighting style are not really explained any further in manga either but all the grasp of it just
-1) he'll draw cards when facing enemies,
-2) then he gonna see the intention of his enemy will bring bad future or not to him,
-3) to avoid bad future he'll see the survival percentage if he fights them and he also can see the survival chances of his enemy,
-4) when the cards shows the results he prepared with strawmen dolls and cards to lauch attack (basically just gambling his fate, there's cards for attack, defense, boost power and there's cards that will disadvantage himself)
-5) the function for the voodoo strawmen dolls is to protect him from enemies attack and from his bad cards
Overall that's how he fighting it's not really got deep explanation but i think the lucky and misfortune cards just a Tarot things like "There's a Risk for every Great power" thingy
if only oda tried that concept in his fight against killer instead of blackmailing him, it would've been a much more interesting fight

But well whatever, maybe it's just Oda way to save it for future story, who knows...

It's not that Hawkins have to get rid of his bad cards, in tarot the effects of a card change depending on whether they turn out to be inverted, cards with good effects turn out to be bad if they are inverted and vice versa.

I think if you told Luffy and Zoro what their chances of success would be for their options in life, both of them would take the most difficult, least likely to succeed option. Zoro because he'd probably get lost trying to find the easiest path, and Luffy because he'd think it'd be more awesome to take the hardest path.
Luffy using a sword, to me, is just wrong. Just because you can pick up a sword does not make you a samurai. His "success" here just shows the quality of his opponents, essentially cannon fodder.

Yeah, the animation quality went WAY up in Wano... but the pacing did not improve at all from Whole Cake -_- The milking is atrocious.

Normal manga would get animate more than one or two chapter. But OP now just get animated half or just one Whole chapter, the pacing is so bad but yet i love this series 😔

Wano, the land of great animation and the worst pacing I've ever witnessed :D
Wano is notorious for slowing things down to a crawl with pointlessly drawn out scenes. It is what got me interested in One Pace.
for what it's worth, this episode was between 8 and a half and 9 pages of a manga chapter. The straw man transformation scene was a panel or two, maybe.
His ability is not Straw man.. It's more like Voodoo magic / black magic / mystic abilities.
But in literally he's a straw man
