The fact they didn't just remold one of their existing jet molds is commendable on its own. I was honestly half expecting a heavy remold of Starscream.

I spent 2 years on an aircraft carrier and a lot of time around Tomcats. The pod on the front is a giant camera system used for targeting and tracking.
So I guess for pilots to "get tone"?

I'd say Hot Rod is more Dare. Rodimus Prime theme is You've Got The Touch. He does beat Galvatron *and* Unicron while the song plays after all. You don't get more badass than that.

Seriously, for ages they have largely been boxes with a jet stuck on top and look really bad from the sides.

Yes, I'm impressed at how they manage to conceal pretty much all robot kibble with that clever alignment of the arms. As for that colour, if it _was_ phosphorescent I'd be forgiving, but as it is, it just looks like dirty lanolin. I hope they re-deco this into a bolder look.
@@originaluddite , let me introduce you to Shoji Kawamori... contributor to G1 Optimus Prime design and the first MP Starscream. He also designed mechas like the Valkyries from the Macross anime (where we got the G1 Jetfire toy from). I think you'll like his work.

If this was a standard TF I think its passable, but what hurts this a lot is that it’s part of the Collab line. Ectotron and Gigawatt turned out great. Maverick by comparison is lacking. A great F14 mode and meh robot mode undermined by a poor paint job.

As has been said, he is lackluster compared to gigawat and ecto tron. The volleyball is a nice touch but, a spring loaded jaw with weird chomp action or a camera accessory would been cool.

Aside from the arms, there's a surprising lack of kibble in the jet mode! Kudos to Takara for managing to make an "aerodynamic" looking jet turn into a robot!
They do it quite often. SS Starscream cleans up rather well, and when you go back even farther, you find the ROTF Breakaway, which is a feat of engineering even today.
Now, a Jet this thin is a feat of engineering, and it shows almost zero robot junk in alt mode
I’m really surprised that they used the Cybertron: Thundercracker figure as the base for this guy. Interesting to see some older figures get used like this since the other two are from current figures

Maverick has some pretty neat looking engineering and design. Although he could definitely use some more paint/detailing on the robot mode and the weapons. Maybe something from Toyhax could help on that part.
And that was quite the interesting ending skit.
I think that thing which retracted and went back up is essentially a jet version of a headlight. My father was a WSO in these things while doing an exchange tour with the Navy from the Air Force. Interesting fact he was actually at Miramar when they were filming TopGun and was teaching Navy guys not to do the stupid things Maverick was doing. He also threw a shoe at the TV screen the first time he saw TopGun because of all the things Maverick got away with. If you like I can ask him for you about any technical questions you have about the F-14.
Edit: after watching the video again and playing through Ace Combat 7 with the F-14D I agree with icewolf1974 and what I originally though was a retractable light is in fact not retractable on the actual jet and is labled as the infrared seeker/TV optical unit on the only diagram with labels I could find large enough to read.

The F14's headlight is on its front landing gear, just above the wheel. I believe that part that Emgo was confused about has something to do with the laser guidance missile/bomb system for the weaponary of the aircraft. I lived a few miles from Miramar growing up and I was/am obsessed about this jet. My favorite jet to this day.

Cleanest-looking jet mode I saw and the transformation is kinda similar to Macross.

I've said this in another review for this toy, it's alot like an unreleased veritech design. With the right leg hinges it could pull of a gerwalk.
One big giant crossover everyone's vehicles being the real heroes I like it

Yes, because older jet plane transformers were mostly based on macross' VF-1 valkyrie toy with some alteration. Actually I believe the first jet plane transformer toy was actually VF-1 toy marketed under different name😅
Just consider this as a cheaper alternative (albeit in worse quality) to an actual macross' VF toys.

Dood, comparing the price point of this to Bandai and Arcadia's Macross toys, this is an actual win.
Smaller scale, yes, but durable enough and much, much more affordable.

I have to say I love this figure even though he is lacking in paint. Reminds me of RoboTech lol. BTW the dirt is actually "digital camouflage". As others have said, he does look like he should glow in the dark, and though that would make no sense at all, that would make him even more cool. Dare I say "Why Not".

Maybe the lack of paint (white-ish) kind of represents Maverick’s dress uniform?? Only thing I can think of to justify the lack of paint
That's actually a pretty good observation, true or not
Honestly I like the robot mode, it's the single colour that's the letdown for me. They could've done little things like, I dunno, painting the cockpit interior, missiles, and guns black (or moulding them in black), and bringing the pattern from the topside of the jet mode round to cover the robot mode as well. It seems like a bit of a last minute thing from that.

Ever since I got Ace Combat 7, I have been on a fighter jet kick, and this jet is in the game. As is the F-15 Eagle and the F-22 that Starscream turns into
thank you for the review... especially since you solidified my initial opinion of this... basically have the same opinion I do about the plainness of the robot mode... it doesn't have that pop or Pizzazz that the others have had..
The thing that flips up and down under the nose is a jamming/television pod. The little lump on the bottom is the jamming pod, an ALQ-100 and the main of it is the television pod. It’s used to record engagements that the jet participates in and to increase the visual range of the pilot.
Honestly this is the only crossover figure I'm grabbing. my grandfather was one of the designers for the F-14 Tomcat. granted I'm going to repaint the whole thing before putting official stikers and a commemorative name plate tag that says captain Ike.
Isn't the little thing in the front of the plane supposed to be used to connect the slingshot thingy to the plane on carriers so help with takeoff?

Good review. This figure just screams for the lack of paint. Even more noticable when you put Starscream and Ectrotron next to it. Real shame as with some paint I think the figure would present so much better.

3:41 Emgo316, that is the T.V. Sighting System. It can get video/visual confirmation of a target from beyond visual range. It allowed an F-14 Pilot and R.I.O. to know exactly what they would be firing at if they had to.
3:42 Radar and guidance equipment. that is used for surveilance missions (the two cameras arround the piece) and to guide Radar Missiles (the equipment inside the nose of the aircraft). common equipment, especially in the F-14 Tomcat since it was a jet from the 70's/80's, and was sadly decomissionized (hence the dirty spots on the paint). the wings folded back when the jet achieved more than 800km/h to make it fly faster (less drag), and folded foward to avoid the plane plummeting to the ground in low speeds (the famous stall). his guns are external fuel storage tanks, and i imagine how confused would he be when the human pilot needs to jetisson them out when the fuel runs out on them... he would be unarmed at that point... XD

There's some decent detail on the fuselage but paint seems unfinished...cockpit interior, wheels, missles did they rin out of black paint?
I've been to the town where Top Gun was filmed a few times. It's actually in Mojave, CA on it's way to Las Vegas. The motorcycle scene that got copied in Star Wars and other movies was right in front of best wesern which is noiw gone
The vast majority of Top Gun was shot in the San Diego area. They used the actual Top Gun, which was at Miramar at the time. The volleyball scene was also at Miramar. The locker room stuff was not Miramar, but at an indoor pool in Mission Beach. All of the bar and nightclub interiors and exteriors were in San Diego. The exterior of the "officer's club" (actually the exterior of a banquet hall) is right next to the pool where they shot the graduation scene. Both are at NAS North Island, by the beach. Charlie's house and Viper's house were Oceanside and Point Loma. A lot of the riding/driving around stuff was over by the airport, in Point Loma, and in Oceanside.
I've lived in San Diego County for a total of 38 years on and off, and I've been to, and inside, every Top Gun location in the area except the inside of Charlie's house.

Weird that Maverick seems to be a completely new mold, especially since Ectotron and Gigawatt were heavy retools. Maybe that means that the Maverick mold will be reused for something else later? For some reason I get a GoBots vibe from him, so maybe Hasbro will do something with the Leader-1 character.
3:47 that’s a chinpod on the F14, it is mostly used for IRST (depending on the variant) and is most likely vitally important for the F14 because it makes it capable to go beyond visual range.
Would this mold be a good one to change from an f14 to an f15 as starscream and the other seekers?

The could have left that dingy look off of it. I'm sure that in the military they would never let planes be that dirty at all. It should have had the blue stripe, and black tail fins too. Great review though !

As is typical of this range, the vehicle mode is very accurate, and the transformation appears intricately fun, but the robot mode ends up looking like a Gobot.
This figure reminds mo of a Macross Veritech, it looks awkward at the first images release. But after your review I want one! He looks cool!
All I see is Cybertron thundercracker in a movie verse style.
I see a cyber jet from G2.
Also, it's more an Alternators style, since it's a G1 style character with a realistic vehicule.

Definitely don’t regret canceling my preorder for this. It’s neat in some ways, but there were too many things I didn’t like that didn’t justify the price.
The transformation is similar to G1 Jetfire (or a Robotech Veritech Fighter). have you tried tranforming Maverick to a Gerwalk?

it works with any figure that has those small ports on them.
It’s nice seeing a transformer that isn’t blatantly obvious that it’s a robot because it’s not suffering from the the seeker problem of jet on top of robot

You should it's one of Tom Cruise's better films as it's the story of a Navy pilot who rather reckless at times but gets to go to a school for the best pilots to become even better than they are currently!

Huh that transformation reminds me A LOT of Thundercracker from Galaxy Force / Cybertron. I may have just gotten an idea for a custom if this guy is particularly unpopular and gets clearanced.

The thing located below the nose is called the chinpod. For infra red or camera system.
The thing about the wings is they are moved back when gaining speed and spread out when at low speeds
