Curious about the history behind the cobblestone streets that embellish historic city centres worldwide? 🤔 In this video, we analyse their origin and deep dive into the Brussels case with L’Atelier de Recherche et d’Action Urbaines (ARAU), a group created in 1969 by Brussels locals asserting their urban rights. We explore how heritage, accessibility, and urbanism intersect as inclusivity principles shape the city's landscape. From preserving cultural heritage to fostering social inclusion, join us as we uncover how this city embraces diversity and creates accessible design solutions for a more inclusive urban environment! 🏙️

The interviewees in this video are speaking in French! Don't forget to turn on subtitles if needed 😊

I believe this is something you can set on the video: subtitles enabled by default

@@Jorpl_ Unfortunately not! We will put video snippets/reminders in the videos in the future ☺

@@urbanmobilityexplained I've just looked it up, and the article "How to force subtitles to appear on TH-cam" says the method to force captions by default is to add:
      yt:cc=on
      To the video's tags!
My apologies, I thought it would have been a visible setting as I know I have seen other videos force captions on by default!

The best solution is: educate oneself and learn a few languages😊

I like how excited and enthused the ladies are about cobblestones. Cobblestones are not really of significance or value in the UK except for preservation in historical contexts so it's interesting to hear and see a different perspective on them. Thanks for sharing as always.

This episode was full of fun facts.
Crazy to think that for the majority of time streets belonged to pedestrians.
So sad to see streets in this video with small sidewalks and cars parked on both side of the road (also for cars).
It made me wonder: there's all these complaints about kids these days always being in their phone instead of living in the moment/real world ... but what about the 3 or 4 generations before? Why are there no complaints about those generations always being in their car (even for short trips) instead of being in the community/real world?
(obvious caveat: yes, yes, some people can't walk/cycle and some do big deliveries with their vehicle, but on average people are too much in their car (esp. considering that 50% of trips are shorter than 5km))

Super présentation d'un aspect plus invisible de l'urbanisme de Bruxelles, et pourtant tout aussi important d'un point de vue esthétique et durable et inclusif !

Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan.

Quite right. As far as Brussels is concerned, ARAU is in close contact with several pro-bike and pro-pedestrian organisations.

a super cool video on a topic I think definitely needs more discussion in urban planning spheres! I especially love the nuanced takes that the women have in the tour. Went to Lisbon a few months ago, and there they have a really interesting system where although marble cobblestones are the default for pavements, on the road and also for pavements at steep inclines, they use porous granite rock which has significantly better grip when it's wet. A really interesting technique, just showing how versatile cobblestone can be!

Cobble stone is awesome cuz its cheap
and its loud if you drive fast
    So motorists flow down
The sidewalks with cobblestone are annoying for wheelchair users
And it costs more to lay them by hand
I'd say if your want to have a win win put them on the road
Maybe on pre assembled grids or sth
Streets are for people not for cars after all

its cheap material but extremely expensive to install, due to labor costs, it's hence actually more expensive than almost any possible alternative, at least in western europe

I live in Brussels after moving from France. I despise the pavement : impractical, slippery and dangerous. The cars have a smooth surface and the pedestrians a uneven surface . Ideally, it should all be replaced by smooth non slippery surfaces.
