- Filming by yourself solo is more common than not nowadays. With having filmed for 20 years, I am sharing my top 5 main tips for pulling off a one man production and providing my clients results that appear as if it was filmed by a full crew. Don't get me wrong, having a crew is awesome. But you can pull off more than you may think as a single person.

I have added links in the description for this video to some of the gear mentioned.
Positive you have the best TH-cam channel
The wagon is sooo good😄👍 my back will thank you😄😄😄 thx for this List.great Video idea🤙🏼
So simple, but a total game changer for how much you can pull off.
Great vid. I use a folding cart. I have a light pole and a boom mic attached. A wagon might work better for gear. I'll give that a shot.
Thanks, Scottie. Yeah man, the wagons have really been a logistical life saver. There are tons of relatively cheap options. I just added the links to the two exact wagons I'm using but I recommend just finding one that happens to be on sale.
Good job on this video, I need a wagon. Lol
LOL. I feel like a wagon salesman in this, but it has just made such a difference for a mostly single shooter like myself.
@@AshvonChamier for sure, it would save me three or four trips to the car. Send me a wagon link please.
@@patkaye1215 Heck yeah they will. I have put links to the two I have in the in the description. But there are a lot of options you can explore from there.
I also have an idea for a video if you're ever interested - "How to cut down your shots for an edit" - I have a hard time deleting clips as well as making short videos - all my edits end up being 5-10 minutes when they should be 10- 30 seconds. Another/related idea - I'd actually be curious to see how you would edit some clips I shot (not trying to make you do my work lol, 😂 I'm too much of a control freak anyway). I cut down an hour of footage into 15 min of cool shots for a free video I'm doing for a family member, in order to break in my EOS R and gear. He asked for a 10 second video, which I'll do, but I know I'm gonna drop a 5 minute edit at least, everything i do is just too damn long. Anyway, if you're interested just let me know, no pressure. I may also suggest this idea to "This Guy Edits" channel, I definitely need to expand/improve my editing thought process/workflow, and would love to see how both of your brains work. Sorry for the long comment. Cheers brother 👊
I appreciate these episode ideas. I could definitely see making one about building the ability to make more concise editing decisions and how to attempt... to not fall in love with your own production so much ya can't cut out anything, lol. Every editor goes through that for sure and there is a lot to say and talk about for that.
That being said, the first question I judge every project on when it comes to end running length is, who is dictating it needs to be a certain length? Often times clients assume their piece needs to be as short as possible. But, bottom line is, if it is for web promotion, this is a self imposed timeline. If the video doesn't loose momentum and is being presented in a TRULY interesting way, I say, let it run till it's done. A series of personal examples of mine to represent this viewpoint, are the videos I have made for Trans Am Worldwide that have generated millions of plays and sold out multiple car editions for them. One video even runs 25 minutes. They didn't ask for that. They just give me the reigns for the creative vision at this point and allow me to make whatever I think they need.
Be sensitive to choosing only the best option you have to get a particular idea across and don't add in another version someone else said, in say an interview or something if the topic was already covered by someone else. There you need to be selective. Only choose who said it best. Way more to talk about on this so I will definitely add your idea for an episode to the list. THANKS!
As far editing some of your footage, I apologize but my schedule is already 10-14 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, lol. Booked out till 2023 and trying to get ready for launching the first couple of episodes of mine and my buddies rock album, sci-fi, comedy web mini series "Cue The Muses" that has been in the works for the last couple of years. Just to add to my the insane schedule, I also have a 3 month old new born. lol.
TIMES ARE JUST CRAZY BUSY! It's a miracle I have been able to pull off making any channel episodes lately. I really appreciate to hear you are enjoying the content buddy.
@@AshvonChamier "Attempt" haha, that's awesome and very true.
Dude, thank you so much for this comment - it alone has already improved my mindset. You even literally described the exact situation I'm in! Hah, that's crazy. I usually make stuff unnecessarily long, but in this case, I have so many cool shots that are actually pretty good (imo, and not 100% perfect of course), so it was completely pointless for me to be so focused on edit length, and completely ignore the potential, (for this project at least). THANK YOU.
I was already in awe at the videos, and amount of them you've been putting out - knowing that you're probably insanely busy... but now... I'm completely mindblown!! Haha! Congrats my dude! And thank you for reminding me about your music/video project, I now remember seeing you jamming out in a video and being like damn, man can shred too
I appreciate the channel brother, Cheers! 😎👊
@@skAteSMR Great man! Super happy the additional info helped get you over the creative hump. Thanks for all the props the work I've been putting into the channel and yeah, keep you eye out for the internet release of the CUE THE MUSES show. It is without doubt, the most fun creative thing I have ever concocted. From concept creation, to scripting, to filming, writing and recording a rock album again for the first time in decade, to acting, to editing, color grading, sound design, etc.
Thanks for this video. Your videos are so helpful. I have a wedding for friends not paid in two weeks and I want to do the best I can for them. I have R5C with Tripod, Gimbal and some handheld shots lined up. I need to get some ideas on sound besides on camera mic with rode. I have zoom 4 but not sure how to capture the sound at the actual vows part of the day. Where would I place my 1 or 2 mics for the zoom. Should I just use wireless mics on them? Having fun rigging up the new camera and am very impressed with the video quality. TIA
Really happy to hear you are enjoying them dude! During the ceremony, if you have 3 lav mics, I place one on groom, one on bride (if it is white and you can hide it well!), one on the officiant. If you only have one, I go for just the officiant as they are in the center and talking the most. I personally like using something like the RODE F2 or TASCAM DL-10. They are not wirelessly connected to your camera so you will have to sync in post. BUT... you won't have any wireless interference and can film them from even further away. As far as an external mic, it depends on the layout but if there is an arch of some kind the couple is being married under, that is a golden ticket to hide a boom mic center, buried in flowers, pointed down overhead, running to an external audio recorder. In my case, Zoom F6.
It's been a few years since I have done a wedding but if by any chance the budget allows it, having a second camera operator running a second camera makes for a much better end product. A wedding is exactly the kind of live event situation with one time only moments where I highly recommend having more coverage with additional shooters. It is impossible to catch everything as a single person at a wedding. I was still able to put together a solid enough highlight reel. After doing it a couple of times that way though, I never wanted to do it solo again, lol. In the edit, you really want multiple angles to cut to and if you are the only one filming, you will be locked down to keeping the camera rolling while they talk so you miss the opportunity to be explorative with shot composition and moving to as many different vantage points.
Here is a 6 minute highlight reel I put together from what was an hour long film I made for this wedding couple. This was the last wedding I filmed a few years back and I brought on two additional shooters to run a couple of my other cameras. Might give ya some ideas for things to catch though?

Concerning audio options, how do you feel about using 32 bit float recorders like the Zoom FT B2 or the new Rode Wireless Pros instead of lav mics? Seems like it might be a more streamlined option for solo shooters since you won't have to monitor audio.
Huge fan of the Zoom F6 for my boom micing and Zoom F2's for Lav Micing. I have not tried the Rode Wireless Pros but... I never want my lav mic showing in my shots to keep it more cinematic and not news at 11 looking. So, I very much want small concealed lav mics for my approach.
I talk about my audio choices and 32bit float in this: th-cam.com/video/ZX7ueaLAGYU/w-d-xo.html
Yes, I work in the same way and was curious if you did too. I usually use my H6 for the boom mics during interviews and as a backup to the Zoom F2. It’s so great to not have to think about audio levels as a solo shooter. The new Rode Wireless pros seem really versatile and you can plug lav mics into them too, fyi. I may even sell my sennheiser lav mic system and go with the Rodes. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! Do you break down any pre-rigged gear on location after you're done filming?
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful, Jonathan. In general, I only break down and repack the same items I was unable to pre-rig before the shoot. So my actual lights for instance, all go back in their cases, the same way I brought them. The same way my bags arrived packed as neatly and efficiently as I could muster, get packed back up the same way for load out. But any light modifiers like softboxes, cameras, gimbals, and some other miscellaneous items I don't want to have to spend time tinkering with on set that came pre-rigged, stay like that when I pack up for the day.
If the shoot has me filming up till the last minute and then needs me off the premises as fast as possible, then sometimes I will CAREFULLY place some lights in my vehicles without cases. In those situations, I try to make sure not to put them underneath anything. I might even just set a couple in my front seat knowing that I can put a hand on them when I am driving back to my studio.
Last thing, if I know load out is going to be a big rush ahead of time, as we near the end of the shoot, I gradually start pre-packing anything I can think of that is not going to be needed for the rest of the shoot. I don't take it all the way to my van, but get it ready for a simple carry and no additional breakdown packing needed.
@@AshvonChamier Got it. I appreciate the detailed reply. I regularly film on my own and this video opened my eyes to what one person can do. Very motivating!
@@jonathancwu Fantastic dude! Appreciate you letting me know!
