      I don't want to live in Spain because of their politics. I just want to stay short enough so that I am not considered a resident. I would love to stay for a month or two. I was in Tenerife in 2019, for 8 days, and 10 days in Andalusia area. I love the Andalusia area the most. Southern Spain has a lot to see and enjoy. Traveling north is also easy and convenient. The train fare and air fare are reasonable. I will return in 2021, or as soon as the EU lifts the restrictions and this virus is under control.

    The weather depends on where you live in Spain. I live with my wife and two children for 17 years at the Costa Blanca and I can tell you that it is never as cold or as hot as some places inland. Nothern Spain is also totally something else. Health system is indeed good despite a bit of waiting time sometimes. I had a heart catheterization last year so I know what I am talking about. Really fantastic roads all over the country. Love to drive here. And corruption is all over the world...We have a good gestor, so bureaucratic things we leave to up them. First of, I'd love to congratulate you for this sincere and unbiased video. Being an Spaniard, I really appreciate that a foreigner gets to understand the values of this country as you did and you've done a great job.
    However, I'd like to point out that corruption is not far different from what you'd find in other European countries. But you are right saying that the corruption is at a political level. I guess Spain is so famous about its corruption because the media here just works and bring it to light.
    As for burocracy I can confirm you that France has way more than Spain (I have two sisters living there) and never in my life used a "gestor" to renew the driving licence. This process works very well indeed: you get a notification by SMS or mail and in half an hour the licence is renewed.
    Again, awesome videos. 😀

      +Welsh Toro Your country is as corrupt than Spain or ebven more. It's simply a different kind of corruption. I would call it white glove corruption. The average citizen of the united kingdom is not aware of it simply because it is a hidden corruption, it is not easy to see. But it is there and totally infects British society. We have a near example here... Simply look at Gibraltar and analize what they are making money with...
      "Roberto Saviano:
      The associations that work in transparency have shown irrefutable data. The United Kingdom is, without a doubt, the most corrupt country in the world, not in political or police terms but when we talk about money laundering.
      No Englishman feels he lives in one of the most corrupt countries in the world because you can not bribe a policeman or corrupt a politician, but they do not know that your financial system is totally corrupt. And what do I say when I say corruption? I mean that there is no control over the flow of capital, I do not necessarily speak of London but of Gibraltar, Malta or Jersey, which work through the doors through which the United Kingdom moves money that has no control.
      Panama is known to be the money laundering capital. Panama avenged itself after the filtering of the Panama Papers. A full-fledged revenge when publishing names related"

    • @grahamjohnson4702
      @grahamjohnson4702 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jose as a Spaniard you are used to the ways of renewing your driving licence and other documents you need but us foreigners don't know or understand the system so we do employ the gestor to do this for us, for example to get my residencia I could only get an appointment on line that was only in Spanish, no alternative language for the foreigners that are the ones needing this service, and it did not give me an indication of what I would need to show i.e. bank statements and proof of earnings or income. If you have one document missing then you have to make another appointment, yes on line, and go back again. Appointments are usually about 3 to 4 weeks later, depending where you go. So a gestor is important for foreigners.

My wife and I live in England but visit Spain often and have travelled throughout the country. I completely agree with you about the cliches and the crap that people associate with Spain. Spain is a great country if you can afford it. There are many people that can not. Many outsiders thing that all you do is chill out and eat tapas and enjoy good weather, etc, etc. If you ever see my comments you will know that I am highly critical of many things Spanish. gracedu2 I suppose that's how they behave in your country, certainly not in mine. Both women and men go out on dates, clubbing, dancing, fiesta all night long. Spain is quite liberal in regards to sex, like many West European countries. With regard to your comment about spaniards living with their parents; housing is very expensive, many stay with their parents until they finish studying because they cannot afford to move out but of course they're not infantilised because of that. And no, they do not live with their parents after they're married.

    I agree in everything. Corruption is turning into a real problem. Not because of the money they steal, but for the bad example for citizens and the lost of hope in politics and the system... I think we have a good system, but corruption is making it look awful

    • @spainspeaks
      @spainspeaks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, corruption is a problem all over the world. If you look at the place where it is not so bad, the keys seem to be transparency and tougher penalties for those that break the law. You would also need to punish political parties that have proven to be prone to corruption. But that is not easy in a two-party system.

    • @mamarrachopunpun
      @mamarrachopunpun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, for public schools it depends on the autonomous community you are living in. For example, Madrid, Catalunya, Andalusia, etc. Here is a link to the Madrid site in Spanish www.madrid.org/cs/Satellite?language=es&pagename=PortalEducacion%2FPage%2FEDUC_home
      Normally, enrolment needs to be done before the end of the current school year, which has just finished but the system is obliged to provide education for late arrivers, if that is the case. Private schools most likely work in a similar way. Hope that helps.

    Spain is not only Madrid and Barcelona. Nature is a huge part of the everyday life. You might not have a big garden in a suburban area, but you have parks everywhere literally in every city there are so many parks. They are especially good for children&families and you´ll also see always groups of elders play cards or just relax in the parks.

      I dont live in Spain nor do i know anything about real estate in Spain, but as realtor in the U.S. I have a sense of some of the consideration one must look before making a decision of buy vs rent. If your intention is to move back home within seven years, my advise would be to rent, of course, cost of owning vs rent has to be considered for each region, however, rent is often more affordable, not to mention the fact that you are not anchored if the plan changes in the near future, real estate is a cyclical business and prone to ups and downs, economy and political estability plays a role in the real estate market too. Since your venture is a relatively short one I would recommend to seriously look at the rental option for the flexibility and freedom it offers, however, if you're doing as an investment make sure you understand the market in the particular region you plan to buy, Anyhow, good luck with whatever decision you make.

    A couple of corrections:
    1- Those ~280€ you pay are for social security, which means mostly unemployment and pension but NOT HEALTHCARE. Healthcare is funded via taxes.
    2- If you are paying ~280€ means you're not an employee but a freelance ("autónomo" in spanish). That is the minimum you're required to pay, and as a freelance you can choose how much to pay and most people choose the minimum. But then your pension will be the minimum also.
    Employees do not get to choose how much they pay but it is a fixed percentage of the salary (actual payment is split between employee and employer) and it is always higher than those ~280€, usually way higher.

    Hi Stuart. These are great videos. I am wanting to move to Madrid from the USA to teach ESL. I am taking the course through Oxford in January and February to be certified. When I retired, I substituted in the public schools as an ESL teacher but other than that I have no other teaching experience. I have a university degree in Business Administration. However, I only want to teach ESL. I have both a government pension (Social Security) and a private pension. I live alone with no family. Now my concern: will my age be a factor in my being able to get into Spain and/or getting a teaching job or free lancing? I will be 70 in April.

      Hi Michael, have you looked into getting residency here in Spain? Are you on a US passport or European Union?

    • @covfefe6511
      @covfefe6511 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I have. The way that it looks to me is that I will need an EU work visa that I can get from the Spanish Consul in Atlanta or that I get an employer to apply for me once I get to Madrid. But it seems I need to be there to get a job. It looks like a chicken or the egg kind of dilemma. I prefer to have my visa situation settled before I go to Spain since I don't plan to come back to the States. Perhaps I need to stop trying to get all my ducks in a row before I emigrate and just go and take care of everything once I get there. I'm not really sure of which way will be best. But my real concern is my age. I know there will be many barriers to hurdle but my age is something I can do nothing about.

    • @spainspeaks
      @spainspeaks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again, I think that in your situation, if you are able to prove that you have sufficient income you shouldn't have a problem to retire here. Another story would be to get work residency. The problem is that here in Spain work matters are not very flexible, and since you are over the official retirement age, you might have problems. I would suggest you consult the Consul on this matter and the retirement residency option.

    • @covfefe6511
      @covfefe6511 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stuart, again, thank you. What you say makes sense and I kind of expected that answer or I would not have asked the question would I. I can prove an income of USD$1750/mo. From what I have seen on other TH-cam vids that would be a very live-able income even in Madrid. I would still be able to free-lance tutor so that is the approach I am going to take. Plus I am interested in an on-line business. Rather than apply for an EU work visa, I will apply to retire to Spain. I don't know what that involves but I can find out somewhere on-line. Do you think the Spanish govt is allowing retirees to come in? We'll see won't we. Thank you so very much. You advice has been priceless.

    Aquí en Sydney area , nunca podré comprarme una casa , a no ser que lo haga a más de 10 horas de distancia en coche. Por supuesto , lejos de la costa , y en zonas rurales donde hace demasiado calor. O tal vez en Tasmania, donde he estado en Enero , hay terrenos y casas muy baratos , pero no hay empleo , a varias horas de Hobart . Hace una semana he descubierto Russell Island, al Este de Brisbane, donde todavía es muy barato,pero necesitas usar el ferry para cruzar. ...

    What you say about the "gestor" is not wholly accurate.
    Nowadays, renewing your driving license is very easy. You have to pass a simple test, then they take a photo of you with a webcam and do the paperwork for you.
    A few days later they send you your new license by mail.
    As for buying and selling cars, you don't need one either. The paperwork is done at "Tráfico", the Spanish versión of the DMV in USA or the DVLA in UK.

    With Spains good weather and sun, everyone should have some veggies growing, even if in pots. Tomatoes,green beans, squash (Butternut stores well) , potatos, strawberries,etc, Even make a small greenhouse affair, 'hot beds',as they are called. And fruit trees!

      For expense, most coastal towns are ridiculously cheap to live in. Honestly, you can rent a two bed flat for about $250 a month. With a family you're going to want somewhere bigger, but still, it's good value. gas is very pricey compared with the USA, but food tends to be good value. If you eat an American style diet (lots of beef, lots of breakfast cereal, american ice cream etc then food prices could be high, but Spanish food is generally very good so I wouldn't worry too much about that. There are some very fashionable and/or wealthy towns that you should avoid. Places like Barcelona, Sitges, Bilbao, Santander, Valencia. There's nothing wrong with these places at all but they ain't cheap. As for exactly where you should live that's more a matter of personal preference. I reckon you could just find any old place to rent in a nice town such as Alicante, and just drive around for a couple of months looking for a suitable propery to rent. This site is pretty good for property rentals

      just realised your post is a year old! In the meantime you either moved to spain or changed your plans!

    hi great video but u said health care is free but then u said it cost 270 Euros a months can you explain plz r u talking about private health insurance TIA

    • @spainspeaks
      @spainspeaks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, if you are self-employed, you are obliged to pay a minimum of 270 euros a month to cover your healthcare and a (basic) pension when you retire. Both are controlled by the government. If you work for a company you also have an amount deducted each month that varies according to salary. There are private schemes available but you have to pay extra for them. Some people prefer the private health option because it is faster for many treatments, like elective surgery.

      Misho1981jo@googlemail.com Haddad It doesn't matter if you pay the "autonomos fees". You are giving medical attention in hospitals. What you don't get is a pension when you are old if you don't pay it

    Hi stuart, me and my girlfriend (both 23) are trying to plan our move to Alicante next Spring. any ideas for jobs we could maybe get? some home business ideas? we have a place to stay for a short while but earning money is the part we are nervous about. thanks for the videos!

    • @spainspeaks
      @spainspeaks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matthew. unemployment is still pretty high in that area, around 25%. So, if you provide a service e.g. teaching, massages, etc, you might be able to both make a living. A lot of the work in areas like Alicante are seasonal and based around tourism. Bilingual waiters would be in demand but the pay could be low. Check out some type of online business like selling local products, food, wine, beer, or shoes, to your home market. Are you from the UK?

    • @MattyHalsall
      @MattyHalsall 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes we are from the UK. I did a sports massage course at college and also have some sports coaching qualifications i may look into that. My girlfriend will maybe look into making a business centered around animals i.e. dog walking/training for the english people already living there. Was thinking along the ideas of an eBay account too but as always sourcing the products cheap in the first place is something we need to look into. We are coming over for a weeks holiday end of September and hope to make plans around that trip ready for next year. Thanks for the reply your ideas have certainly got me thinking in the right way now. Thanks again!
