    Stage Report
Spaniard Jose Maria Jimenez (Banesto) retained the leader's jersey with Fabrizio Guidi (Polti) sprinting to the Stage victory. Jiminez maintained a lead of 31 seconds on Roberto Heras and 33 on Frenchman Laurent Jalabert, who will be fancied to take the jersey after the ITT on Sunday.
Guidi, took his 2nd victory in front of Peter Van Petegem and Andrei Tchmil. After the start in Mallorca where the riders had to contend with strong winds, the climbers came into their own as there were 3 mountains to climb from the 80 kms mark. The hostilities began as the peloton hit the climb of Sa Batalla (710 metres), where Marcos Serrano went over in front of Jalabert, Pascal Hervé and Jose Luis Rubiera.
Swiss rider Oscar Camenzind went over the next difficultly (Col de Puigmajor, 900 metres), with Laurent Jalabert, inevitably on his wheel. On the descent, Rubiera and the Slovenian rider Martin Hvastija attacked and opened a small gap. Behind, the Banesto team was attempting to counter the attack with the intention of protecting the leader's position of their teammate Jimenez, at least until the ITT on Sunday.
As they went of the climb of Soller (520 metres), the third and last mountain of the day, Rubiera dropped Hvastija. At the top, the teammate of Fernando Escartin had built up a leaed of 1 minute over Jimenez and Jalabert.
Rubiera, 15th on the GC at 1.09, was becoming a serious threat to the position of Jimenez when his lead went up to 1.25. The descent from Parma to Mallorca was the final test for the rider from Asturia. He was clearly aiming to chalk up a legendary solo victory. But Banesto who were defending Jimenez and who still have ambitions for Olano and the sprinters, revved up the chase. The lone attack ended and the sprinters took over.
