You know your knife terms! Nevertheless, having the ricasso wider than the blade is quite common on classic bowie designs. The first bowie I made was exactly the same way, it must have been something else. Please comment more often, I feel like you know what your talking about.

The back half of the blade wasn’t hardened.. you could see the between hardened and soft steel
Yes I saw that line too, I believe it's called a hamon, not a huge concern on a knife of this style.
It looks odd for this reason… the ricasso is wider than the front of your handle… it catches the eye every time
