The melodies in this piece are famous and beautiful. The piano fills out the orchestration as one of the instruments of the orchestra, like a continuo. Rhythms vary -- some regular, some jazzy.
The piece is in two parts. Part I is melodic and classical. Part II is folkloric, including Italian folk song themes sung in the old marketplaces -- a melting pot of great characters and all styles of music. The piece is very contrapuntal in nature. The "picture" created is everything busy and confusing, like the market squares. All lifestyles and musical styles come together at the same moment. This explains why the composer sometimes looks to classical harmonies, and sometimes jazz harmonies. Remembering Naples is the soul of Napoli.
