Overhead Flypasts Outside Biggin Hill Airshow | 2019

- With no chance of getting to Eastbourne, I set myself up for a weekend at Biggin Hill. I decided, on the Saturday, that I would try something I haven't done in merely two years - standing on the approach of the runway - essentially underneath the displays as they go over.
With airshows changing, particularly since the Shoreham tragedy in 2015, it has made the experience at them quite different. The crowd is moved back, some of the displays require a telescope to see what's going on, some aircraft cannot perform particular manoeuvres, although I must confess it didn't seem to effect anything at this show, and more recently some shows have closed as they can't get the funding to meet the Civil Aviation Authorities' requirements.
It is for those reasons I saw this as a good opportunity to watch the show on the Saturday from multiple locations outside the airport. The spectacle of things from Merlin engines to the Eurofighter Typhoon flying overhead is truely amazing, there is no other experience quite like it.

Years ago, before Health & Safety, and those other considerations you mention, there was one show where they opened up that stretch of grass at the runway's end. Just inside the fence alongside the road, where you were. One of the best shows I attended, fantastic vantage point. Have loved watching your video, well done!

Nice video. It's a great atmosphere inside, but I think you get a better view of the action from outside, where all the aircraft do their banking. The display line is quite far away, so you actually don't get to see too much. Now I know why everyone takes such long DSLR lenses in with them!
