    ADDITIONS/ERRATA:
    -Player Core says that riders only need to be 1+ size categories smaller than the mount. The restriction of 2+ size categories applies to PCs riding PCs ONLY. Aaaaand the exception to this is the Centaur. There does NOT seem to be language about some Awakened Animals (e.g. awakened horses) getting the same treatment, however. ☹As a GM though I would allow it.
    -ON RARITY: all these ancestries are Uncommon, except Awakened Animal and Surki are Rare. Werecreatures are also Rare. Many of the advanced animal companions are Common (including some flying ones). All the archetypes are Common except Swarmkeeper and Ostilli Host (Uncommon) and Werecreature (Rare).
    -Centaurs and Minotaurs have heritages that allow them to be Medium-sized with a minor other advantage.
    -Centaur has a Level 5 feat Accommodating Mount, which gives a PC riding you 3 actions per turn (you still have 2 actions)
    -Merfolk don't have feet, and so they only have a 5' land Speed and can't improve this until later. The L5 feat Strong Tail increases your speed from 5' to 15', and L9 feat Shore Gift lets you you have two feet (and gain a land Speed of 25'). It is an alternate form that you spend 1 action to get in and out of.
    EDIT: This book introduces the SUPRAMARINE CHAIR: "A supramarine chair is a wheeled, water-filled bath or tank, originally designed by merfolk, for assisting aquatic people’s mobility on land. A supramarine chair functions as a wheelchair (Player Core 293), with the heavier-duty land-delver’s chair functioning as a traveler’s chair." This also bypasses the merfolk's usual issue that it can't be outside of water for more than 24 hours (-1 Fortitude) or 48 hours (suffocation).
    -At my tables, I probably would remove the restriction of "permanent wings" from Winged Warrior and allow ancestries who have a feat allowing them to get temporary wings to take it. Already, some Level 1 ancestries arguably can take this (Strix, Sprite with Evanescent Wings, etc.).

    Howl of The Wild and Starfinder 2e now effectively bring three of the four biggest meta changes: reach stuff, size stuff, and range stuff. Once we crack how to have more than 2 hands then really any ancestry is possible

      I'm hoping for a 4 armed race akin to D&D's Thri Kreen.
      Maybe for PF2e, require them to use light weapons for each arm if they are all in use or the small arms equate to using a shield with a 2H weapon. Basically, limit the possibility of dual wielding 2h weapons for an Ancestry Feat. Naturally, would have to come at some other cost but being able to make a 2 handed Melee weapon using Thaumaturge would be cool as hell!

Having multiple arms would probably have to give less base HP (like 6) or something akin to make it balanced, because two extra arms (assuming they work like normal arms) would enable things like a dual wielding Ranger who always has a knocked bow ready to fire and that can be a bit strong.

    Of course Centaur doesn't have extra Reach. The Bestiary Stats don't have it, and they would fall under Large Long in the size table. Long creatures, typically quadrupeds, have less reach than those who fall under the Tall category. Minotaur and Centaur represent these two categories.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      The distinction between Tall and Long creatures is from PF1 - in PF2e nothing has reach unless it's spelled out. But yes overall your logic is right!

      @@TheRulesLawyerRPG The Remaster Player Core 1; pg. 421 has a table about size and reach. It says most in the section the table is in, but that only means there are exceptions to the rule. I wouldn't be using game terms if they weren't already in the game.
      Honestly the Centaur would have a torso close to the size of a Human, which is my primary logic for them not having reach. The game backing it up with an actual ruling is just nice.

    As a ranger main, I was really excited for new ranger focus spells, but that new Ranger focus spell is... Frankly dreadful, and makes me much less hopeful for any others coming in the book... For some of the same reasons why Ranger's Bramble is pretty dreadful:
    - The range is abysmal, if you're that close to an enemy you're probably a melee ranger, which means if you wanna make the enemy off-guard for one action you could just try and get a flank with a stride or command an Animal Companion, which is significantly easier and doesn't have a high chance of failing.
    - The high chance of failing is because Rangers aren't usually starting with more than 14 wisdom, their lv 1 DC is probably only going to be a DC 15 at most which is pretty below average, even a CR -1 creature is gonna make that save about half the time, anything over that is going to make the save well over half the time.
    - Because of that, you'd expect it to do something on a successful save still, but... No, it just has no effect... Over half the time this spell does literally nothing.
    - This is made even worse when you remember that Rangers primal spell proficiency doesn't scale well (expert at lv 9, master at lv 17).
    - Because of all that, like with Rangers Bramble, the crit fail effect is only ever going to happen on a nat 1 no matter how much you debuff the enemies, even accounting for will potentially being the 'worse' save this is never going to happen.
    - I get that it makes them off guard to all allies, but the success rate is still appalling, there's so many other ways to achieve this same thing but better...

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Its value is teamwork. There's value in making a foe off-guard to the whole party even on a regular "success," giving the entire party +2 to attacking it. (Not everyone wants to take what is probably a single spot that grants flanking, and it costs an action to get to.) One of the benefits for the Rogue Scoundrel subclass is to get that effect on a CRITICAL success..
      And yes, spell proficiency not increasing for Rangers IS a problem!

    • @snowsun538
      @snowsun538 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@TheRulesLawyerRPG To add onto that teamwork, this is a way for your RANGED teammates to get off-guard. There are very few ways to allow ranged characters off-guard. Even the scoundrel rogue only helps your melee teammates.

    • @nyx7664
      @nyx7664 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheRulesLawyerRPG I think that's a really good point and has made the spell go up in my evaluations! But it does still leave me with the range issue, and the really big issue of the save DC...
      I feel like ultimately, the spell is just too much of a high-roll spell, when that effect works it's truly incredible and potentially tide-turning! But whether it works or not is such a big risk compared to casting something like gravity weapon for a consistent dmg buff, or Heal Companion/Animal Hide if you're an AC build...

    • @SilverGhost0
      @SilverGhost0 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know if it would help that much for it to have the following crit success and success effects:
      Crit success: the creature is unaffected
      Success: The creature is off-guard to you until the start of your next turn.
      Similar to create diversion for getting off-guard, but with a longer duration.

    Takes up hand, 1 action to draw, 1 action to use _and_ Comsumable? Yeah, no thanks.

    22:46 "They spend so much time to wonder if they could, they never asked if they should. But they are Chellaxians, they would probably would have answered "yes" either way."

      L5 feat Strong Tail increases your speed from 5' to 15', and L9 feat Shore Gift lets you you have two feet (and gain a land Speed of 25'). It is an alternate form that you spend 1 action to get in and out of.

    Unless it is something like a feat that I'm missing, I'm a bit bummed that the lycanthropy archetype doesn't really have a lot of bite in its curse. I get it is a bit of a balancing act as you need it to be an actual curse but you can't have the character become unplayable (as is the case with the default rules.) Still, I thought Matt Mercer's approach for the Blood Hunter - Order of Lycanthropy requiring a Wisdom saving throw to not immediately move up and attack the nearest possible target (which includes allies) was a good compromise so it would have been nice to see something like that.
    Other than that, great, now Clawdancer is convincing me to make another kitsune rogue build. And Frostbound Adjustments seems interesting as someone wanting to do a campaign in a winter setting.

    Winged Warrior only has 4 Ancestries you can use it with. Strix, Kobold (Don't know if they keep the Winglets feat), Tengu and Awakened Animal. No other ancestry has permanent wings. OF all the archetypes, this is the worst designed. You only have 4 actual options at level 2, since any other way to get permanent wings is late game. The grafts for the other Archetypes are low level, and reasonable to be granted for those that want the archetype and not take one of the many options that have those natural attacks.

      The Sprite can get arguably permanent wings with Evanescent Wings, though. As well as some skeletons (the monstrous skeleton heritage makes it RAW) and Beastkin can have it in their hybrid form naturally. Similarly a Poppet and a bunch of other ancestries/heritages could have flavour wings that don't allow flight. Honestly, it's weird that there isn't a low-level graft that grants you wings but not flight in a similar manner on how the Strix wings work.

    • @Olimar92
      @Olimar92 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ditidos Considering how the Sprite Wings are set up in lore, it's not as permanent as one might think. Skeleton might not be able to take advantage of some of the Archetype, especially since it has no way to actually fly and is just bones. I hate Undead, so never actually looked at the Skeleton and what it had.
      Beastkin just fell flat to me. You're basically just getting feathers on your arms.
      I didn't list Poppet because the Fly Speed it gets is level 17 only, and isn't described as being Wings.
      Other Ancestries having Flavor wings? Don't know about that. Heritages, maybe. None of them come from winged creatures to my knowledge.

    If you cast invisibility AFTER casting a Summon Animal spell, will sustaining the summon spell break the invisibility?
    Is sustaining the summon animal spell considered a hostile action?

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Player Core 303 says: "A hostile action is one that can harm or damage another creature, whether directly or indirectly, but not one that a creature is unaware could cause harm. For instance, casting fireball into a crowd would be a hostile action, but opening a door and accidentally freeing a horrible monster wouldn’t be. The GM is the final arbitrator of what is a hostile action."
      It indirectly harms another creature and it's not accidental, so I'd say yes

    As my PC that has recently contracted lycanthropy, I was somewhat interested in this - but looking at the Werewolf Dedication feat that is shown, it kind of sucks (at least for my PC). That's not necessarily a condemnation - not all archetypes are good for all PCs - but it is a bit disappointing; my fighter would be strictly worse using claws or bite, and so he'd basically just be a slightly hairier version of his current build. I suppose there is some use in animal form for travel purposes or the like, but it hardly seems worth what would effectively be an 8th level fighter class feat to take. I guess I'll just focus on getting cured.

      I was looking through the feats and unlocks at higher levels for the werecreature dedication and it just...... isn't great. I'm probably never going to use it if it were allowed unless they change the feats available to work better than regular feats you can grab at earlier levels with almost any ancestry, or make them work with certain classes more often with their own features.

    Wait, so Minotaurs, centaurs, and awakened animals can just be large at level 1? That’s very surprising. I was under the impression that being large was super powerful, and becoming larger permanently would only ever be available at high levels.
    Also do you think that the werecreature archetype has replaced the beast kin heritage, which IIRC made your character half werecreature. I’ve always wanted to play one, but I wonder if it’ll ever be reprinted. Not a big deal either way, and I’m happy that the archetype seems very comprehensive.

    • @TheRulesLawyerRPG
      @TheRulesLawyerRPG  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Being Large has zero effect on stats and reach. And I'd say there are pros and cons to taking up more space.
      Hmm since Werecreature is an archetype and beastkin is a versatile heritage, they can both be on the same character. Beastkin CAN be werecreatures but don't have to be. There's a good bit of overlap, but archetype feats tend to be more powerful than ancestry feats also (since they substitute for class feats). A Level 13 beastkin feat makes your hybrid shape Large. A Level 10 werecreature feat gives you a 2-action alternate Change Shape action that lets optionally become Large.

And the biggest offender of them all, Thaumaturge with Diverse Lore (although that is an old one). It feels like oversimplification and spit in the face of all who chose to invest in a particular RK category, let alone lore.
