Given the new toilet he sits on, I guess the gag was that he now sits on a circa 1900 toilet. As the common fear was that non Y2K compliant machines would not be able to interpret the year 00 as 2000, but as 1900.
I was 18 when this aired and watched it with my brother who was 20 at the time and I thought it was part of the sketch and my bro was laughing so hard and I was like "what? I don't get it.." and he said "the robot's head wasn't supposed to fall off" then I laughed but mostly I was laughing at Conan's laugh... good times.. when we couldn't DVR and if you missed the joke you never got a chance to rewind so you can get the joke... 😉 thank you to the person who uploaded this.. who would've known I'd watch it in 2020 on a smart phone in the palm of my hand while in middle of a pandemic 😝
If NBC was half as good at making shows as they were at policing youtube clips of 10+ year old clips, they'd be the best network on television. Instead of being NBC.
One of my favorite things about Conan is how good he was at reacting when planned humor went awry. I began to kind of look forward to it, because his reactions were always so fun.
I was playing Interstate '82 online with friends new year's eve when it hit 2000. Nothing happened of course, and in the chat I said. "Hey it's 2000 and we are still alive!"
From the looks of things, the robot was simply going to switch to a circa 1900 era, pull chain toilet, as part of the joke that computers would misinterpret the "00" as being the year 1900.
This was awesome. I love goof ups! Especially when the people involved can roll with them so well like these three! And I gotta say, while Conan may have been quite horribly hunched over there, I don't begrudge him for doing that. That desk was horrible back then, and his chair didn't look too comfy either.
In retrospect, they were lucky for this accident, because unless a Michael Corleone look-alike somehow figured into this, the robot simply switching to an old-time pull-chain toilet would not have been all that funny.
would've been total impromptu genius if Brian yelled, "I can't go on with the sketch now?!? THERE'S NOOOOOO REASON TO LIIIIIIIVE!!!" "WHERE'S MY KAYAK?!?!?" runs staggered up the stands with costume still on.
I’m amazed at how funny and entertaining this “failed” sketch was when now, there’s talk show hosts that can spend thousands and thousands of dollars on games and sketches that aren’t even remotely entertaining.
@NucularRobit I probably have more clips of him, but I've halted uploading for now because my youtube account already has 2 strikes on it for copyright violations and I'm concerned that the next upload will trigger them deleting my account. Plus I've been busy with other stuff. Maybe at another time I'll start a second Conan account for more uploads, but for now, this will probably be it. At least the kids can enjoy the shit I already uploaded. :)
No one was laughing at the beginning because they were all thinking, "Y2K isn't a joke man. We have 8 more days until civilization crumbles." Now it's 2011.
Hey conanfan33, do you have the Satellite TV skit that features Bill Reilly's Jump and Choke? I may have the name wrong, but imo, it is the greatest channel they've ever done. I can't find it anywhere!
I uploaded several old Conan clips from the mid-late 90's a couple years ago, and I got 3 strikes before I could even blink, and my account was shut down....fucking NBC
+Jodee Rebecca Davey What do you mean? Yeah, it was a real thing and people were worried about it, but programmers had been planning for years. It was fine.
yeah people bought generators because they thought the power supply would crash and stuff like that, news magazines said to unplug all your electric devices containing computer chips during nye ....
In a weird way, this is perfect. The helmet falling off perfectly coincides with the robot "malfunctioning".
I think the sketch was supposed to be the robot resetting on a 1900 WC toilet
When conan does that high pitched laugh that's when you know he is truly laughing
And when he puts his hand over his chest!
I love conans instant comedic recognition that the sketch couldn't compare with the fail. "What's better than that?"lol
That's what I love about Conan, something wrong happens in the sketch and he can work with it which in turns makes it funnier than the original plan!
wmfivethree Hell yeah he did.
This is the last Conan video in my favorites to survive TH-cam's Mjolnir. May your channel be protected forever and ever and ever.
You mean "Ragnarok", right?
Not if he was implying that TH-cam was going to bring the hammer down on TH-cam channels
I love how Andy tries to save the skit while Conan and Brian clearly know there is no going back....
This may be the BEST part.
It wasn't a serious attempt, it added to the comedy. I would have done the same thing.
That's a sidekick's job
He had social anxiety disorder, an intense, persistent fear and avoidance of social situations.
😂 And yet he pooped in front of all those people?
When I meet Conan one day, I wanna ask how this sketch was supposed to finish.
Given the new toilet he sits on, I guess the gag was that he now sits on a circa 1900 toilet. As the common fear was that non Y2K compliant machines would not be able to interpret the year 00 as 2000, but as 1900.
i think this is the hardest conans ever laughed xD
he laughed harder during the del taco del flusho rehearsal.
charlyn yi's impresion of a turtle made him laugh harder
I love it when something really makes conan laugh. Thanks for the clips. They have been great.
It’s the man who’s awfully proud of his bulletproof legs
This was a core memory from my childhood…the awkwardness..the laughter…bravo
Your childhood was my stoned college years
I was 18 when this aired and watched it with my brother who was 20 at the time and I thought it was part of the sketch and my bro was laughing so hard and I was like "what? I don't get it.." and he said "the robot's head wasn't supposed to fall off" then I laughed but mostly I was laughing at Conan's laugh... good times.. when we couldn't DVR and if you missed the joke you never got a chance to rewind so you can get the joke... 😉 thank you to the person who uploaded this.. who would've known I'd watch it in 2020 on a smart phone in the palm of my hand while in middle of a pandemic 😝
i always liked that Conan keeps everything he tapes.
Him and schlansky on the train in italy
All this Y2K talk takes me back.
I love that Social Anxiety Disorder ad at the end, hopefully that won't happen to our toilet robot when he goes to the toilet in public again
Love the very end of this video. Best part and I felt like it was talking to me personally.
3:24 "You're fired"
My life will be forever incomplete not knowing how that sketch was supposed to end
i remember this when it aired, good times
Reasons such as this kept me addicted to the fabulous awesomeness of Conezy O' Bonezy
I was playing Interstate '82 online with friends new year's eve when it hit 2000. Nothing happened of course, and in the chat I said.
"Hey it's 2000 and we are still alive!"
Conan tends to puit his right hand on his stomach when he's losing it.
We'll never know the original ending
From the looks of things, the robot was simply going to switch to a circa 1900 era, pull chain toilet, as part of the joke that computers would misinterpret the "00" as being the year 1900.
Tragic, isn't it?
Jeez. Andy practically fell into the chair, he was laughing so hard.
I actually remember watching this all them years ago. I laughed as hard as Conan did. Fun times, fun times.
I never get tired of Robot On The Toilet! WE love you ROTT!
When bits fail, it just makes them even funnier lol.
This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. When you have a screw up like this, you have to show it.
I've seen this 1000 tines, It's still funny!
I wish I could find more videos of robot on the toilet, he was the greatest.
This was awesome. I love goof ups! Especially when the people involved can roll with them so well like these three! And I gotta say, while Conan may have been quite horribly hunched over there, I don't begrudge him for doing that. That desk was horrible back then, and his chair didn't look too comfy either.
I love the sad robot skit. ♥️
In retrospect, they were lucky for this accident, because unless a Michael Corleone look-alike somehow figured into this, the robot simply switching to an old-time pull-chain toilet would not have been all that funny.
So that's what Conan's real laugh sounds like.
The guy's not Jimmy Fallon, you do hear his real laugh all the time on the show.
@@lethe56 We must not speak of the other one.
John Doe He-who-must-not-be-watched, yes, sorry.
we all have that special laugh saved for these occasions
would've been total impromptu genius if Brian yelled, "I can't go on with the sketch now?!? THERE'S NOOOOOO REASON TO LIIIIIIIVE!!!"
"WHERE'S MY KAYAK?!?!?" runs staggered up the stands with costume still on.
You've got to hand it to Brian McCann for trying to go on with the skit--and for playing along with the screw-up.
Awww Im disillusioned now... :´(
I really thought....... Oh my..
I have no more reason to live! Where's my kayak?!?
i love conan obrien since day one!! so many fond memories
I guess the sketch would've gone with Robot using a 1900 toilet or "water closet" as they had set up.
That was brilliant!! :)
This same robot is on SNL's "Old Glory Robot Insurance" commercial. I wonder who had it first?
Look how hunched over Conan sits here... Self confidence much? He has improved to much :p
That's amazing how hard Conan laughs at this
Just noticed that’s the same robot costume from the Old Glory Insurance commercial on SNL.
Conan is simply the best baby
I’m amazed at how funny and entertaining this “failed” sketch was when now, there’s talk show hosts that can spend thousands and thousands of dollars on games and sketches that aren’t even remotely entertaining.

Has anyone else noticed that the right eye of the robot is gone after the accident?
Classic Brian Mccan
On another note, the song going into commercial was pretty tight... nice, soft brassy sound.
No one was laughing at the beginning because they were all thinking, "Y2K isn't a joke man. We have 8 more days until civilization crumbles." Now it's 2011.
DocSicnarf 2018 now
God damn I’ve never heard Conan laugh so goofy xD
@chica476 I know - that's one of the reasons I love this clip so much.
I have never seen Conan laugh that hard before... ever!
I really want to know how that skit was supposed to end!
22 short years ago… damn.
Hey, that's the robot from SNL's robot insurance sketch
brian mccann!!
1:50 - Unfortunately, Conan's answer is slightly off by 20 years in advance...
His laugh sounds just like Mark Hamill's Joker from the Batman cartoon series.
his laugh is so high. hahahahahha
Hahaha I want a suit like that, I'd wear it every day.
Ohhh I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. On I just knew Brian McCann had to be in there.
@Pahvilaatikko15 Improvisational skills are the best skills to have!
The beginning of Bender?
So classic!
Hey conanfan33, do you have the Satellite TV skit that features Bill Reilly's Jump and Choke? I may have the name wrong, but imo, it is the greatest channel they've ever done. I can't find it anywhere!
Conan should be the voice of Joker in an animated DC movie. Atleast as a Joker cameo.
Something told me that Brian McCann was the robot.
It’s Minty!
@EagleEye812 That's nothing. You should have seen him the first few years on the air. He was a ball of bad posture and nervous habits.
Honestly if this bit would have gone like they would have intended it to in the first place, it wouldnt have been as memorable or as funny as it was.
no it's not Toby, this was one of Conan's usual actors, Brian McCann
One of it's eyes broke off :-P
conan's laugh is so high pitched, i love it! GO COCO!
I uploaded several old Conan clips from the mid-late 90's a couple years ago, and I got 3 strikes before I could even blink, and my account was shut down....fucking NBC
2:00 classic!
of course it was Brian McCann a.k.a. the best writer
No. That distriction should go to Brian Stack... Another excellent Conan writer
Its like real life FUTURAMA
Thumbs up for Social Anxiety Disorder.
Poor Raymond
TV used to be good and even clean. Now it's horrible...
@conanfan33 Dang, yeah don't risk it.
What’s that very quiet drumming sound in the background?
+felicity4711 This was most likely recorded off of an old VHS tape, so you're hearing the VCR motor. That's my hypothesis anyway.
you ruined it for the children!
Did They Really Buy Into Y2K Back Then?
+Jodee Rebecca Davey What do you mean? Yeah, it was a real thing and people were worried about it, but programmers had been planning for years. It was fine.
+conanfan33 Y2K Was Never Gonna Happen
yeah people bought generators because they thought the power supply would crash and stuff like that, news magazines said to unplug all your electric devices containing computer chips during nye ....
+Marcel Zager Boy,What Dopes
And my parents worried about their microwave .-.
Does he still use old people's medicine for fuel?
it was really a MAN
It's Bender from Futurama!
And holy crap it's Toby from "The Office" during his time at conan.
No, that's Brian McCann, one of Conan's best writers
Boy that is an authentic non-fake laugh by Conan.. very rare
3:24 *smiling* "
please don't fire me"
no, hes actually conan's boss. (used to be, he retired a few years back)
exactly
At least this character wasn't as bad as the FedEx Pope. He was the worst.
I actually remember watching this all them years ago. I laughed as hard as Conan did. Fun times, fun times.
