    Not just playing in time with the left hand while soloing out of time in the right, but talking about what he's doing as he does it. Mind blown.

    Thanks for reminding me that the R57 voicing can sound good in a jazz context. As a guitarist I often avoid intervals of a 5th in the bass because it just sounds too "rock and roll" to me. You made me rethink this.

      As musicians we always seem to push away the "simple" ideas and then inevitably come back to them when we're more advanced. I guess really, there's nothing wrong with a simple idea. A more developed musician knows the value in simplicity. It's a beautiful thing

    Hi Peter. Prof pianist (rock specially but also jazz and classical styles) here, and I'm normally, for good or ill, pretty snobby about other players. But you are just a SUPERB player and all I can do is learn from you. Believe me I pressed the pause button and tried out some of the lines and riffs. Couple of things:
    2. You are a very very lucky man being able to stretch left hand 10ths with ease. Of course there are alternatives with right hand open chords to make up the chord, but the fact is that some of these 10th voicings just sound better.
    2. Do you play rock styles? It shares much with jazz obviously but of course there are many distinctions and its a whole world of piano playing in itself.
    Also, I like your teaching style. Its not too basic like many of the clips on other TH-cam piano channels. Also you don't condescend to your audience.
    All thumbs up here.

    Hi Peter, I really do love this video. I showed it to my piano teacher, the great Kieran Quinn, Sligo, Rep of Ireland and together we worked out a four on the floor version of Cole Porter's "You do Something to Me" in the same style as Sinead O'Connor's version th-cam.com/video/PK9dtZSIj-U/w-d-xo.html Now I'm working on Richard Rogers "Have You Met Miss Jones?" and it all started with your 2 minutes of pure gold. Thank you very much indeed. Regards, Kevin Collins (Sligo)

    • @Alic4444
      @Alic4444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep! And EG had a lot of ways of playing around with the left, like rolling the chords, often just the bottom note anticipating the rest of the chord on the beat. And he REALLY loosened up the feel of the right hand once he had that 4 on the floor going in the left.

    Left hand hitting 10ths white key to white key, but at 0:33 the 10th from E flat to G is broken. I wonder what he would say about similar voicing options for solo piano for hands that cant reach that white-white 10th, or for hands that can't reach an octave.
