I'm a tosser... my mum was born in England and I used to make a whole pile many a Sunday evening... Lemon & cinnamon sugar are my favourite. Thanks Steve. :-)
In Argentina we do them exactly as you've done them; very thing and we rolled them too, but the recipe is a little bit different. Of course we eat them with argentinian sweet of milk (dulce de leche) and it's DELICIOUS!!
My Aunt Chris (who is from England) used to make these for me on Sundays. Instead of fresh lemon though, she used fresh squeezed orange juice. Simply amazing. When we moved, it forced me to start making them myself, only I used a French crepe recipe. Still tasted great. :) I need to get myself a proper pan and start making them again.
I had been looking for this everywhere. Normally i would buy them american pancakes as they seemed to be the only ones i could find in the supermarkets. But now thanks to you i can make my own!
I have never had the first pancake work. I usually eat it myself because it looks so dodgy...but it tastes yummy. Sugar and fresh lemon juice are the best. Just like my mother used to make!
It's an unwritten rule, that first pancake, the ugly duckling but still tastes divine.. LOL, only mums would normally know that, another unwritten rule.. :o) Thanks for sharing.
I've just gotta say... Made these today. I'm 10 years old and I usually make a mess in the kitchen by trying stupid recipes on TH-cam that taste disgusting... But these pancakes are amazing. I made them alone without any help and I made my pancakes for my family and we all sat down and enjoyed a delicious pancake. My mum, dad and me loved it! Bravo!
Thank you very much, I moved over to america from Scunthorpe, And I was feeling homesick this made my day to have a great taste of Britain, I had golden treacle on mine it was absolutely fantastic
This brings back many a fun childhood memory and I can't believe I have never made these for my American hubby! (I am British) I am going to rectify that and see what he thinks compared to the American pancake! As an aside, I like your top. Very stylish. 😊
Our traditional pancakes are made exactly the same, but we sprinkle cinnamon sugar mix on the inside, roll them up and sprinkle on top as well. Yummy! PS, from SA.
Watching it made me go on youtube search quest to find what I always make. I'm from Poland. My mum always made something similar to French pancakes, my friend makes this one so I believe both exist to some degree in Poland. I ended with doing a mixture of both. I use milk, eggs, oil, salt and flour and have consistency between an English and a French one. I eat them with jam, marmalade, spinach with mushrooms or sausage, or curd cheese with sugar and an optional yolk. Lemon juice with sugar is something I definitely need to try. I find it fascinating how it differs between countries.
Also is there a reason to start with dry ingredients? I always whisk milk with eggs and salt, gradually add flour, then a little bit of oil. Does making it sort of in reverse order make any difference to how they are in the end?
Małgorzata Kubala When you add flour to wet, it tends to clump and makes it harder yo mix, make a paste at wet it down is always easier and smoother. Thanks for sharing your story by the way :o) Steve
Delicious and simple, something I love but haven't made for a very long time. Have to say, I will stick to turning to be on the safe side, the last time I tried tossing, I had more pancakes on the floor than on my plate (-: thanks again Steve, I now have a longing for the simple English Pancake, lemon and sugar, what can be better. Cheers and look forward to more great videos.
Sandy, Thanks for the great comment. I think tomorrow on Shrove Tuesday, I'm going to make these. They are my favorites and the lemons are in Season here. I can't wait. Like you I love the simplicity of Lemon Sugar and great English Pancakes. Hope you make them, have a great day Steve

I always cooked pancakes the American style. I'm going to try the English style. I subscribed. Impossible for me to toss them. I make the pancakes in a big electric grill. Thanks a lot
sha whit Purply is not a colour, it was Pinklish anyway or a pinkly purple. Thanks Sharon but Joseph got in the quickest. So glad you came in the show and sorry if the sound was messy, all my fault :o) Steve
My mother, and nowadays me, added a bit mineral water, it makes the pancakes a bit more fluffy. I never tried lemon juice, will have to try it next time. thx!
Fizzy mineral water? Yes that will but that can make it more like an American Pancake of MCD's Pancake. Thank you for your comment and a great tip. Steve
Hi steve I am from Britain and my dad loves vinegar and brown sugar on his pancakes (it sounds gross I know) but I tried it and It is actually quite nice, I recommend it. Also adding vanilla is always nice -ellie
It's actually my favourite type of pancake just like my mum used to make. I find the american style one to be a little sickly for my taste. plus I prefer with lemon and sugar
Even tho I am only 18 years old, I always made this instead of my mom. And I was always better tosser than turner.. At first I turned them, but they would mostly break.. So I tried tossing it once (I was scared before that) and I did it perfectly.. Now I consider myself a pro xD and also I think you explained this very nicely.. I always loved English pancakes more than American... I am from Serbia tho :)
thanks for the recipe! i tried one. but i dont have a spatula. and my pan turned out to be sticky (though it states non-stick pan) thus i cant flip it either. but the batter tastes amazingly great! i added 1tbsp of sugar anyway bcs i love something sweet.
The way I make pancakes was passed down to me from my Yorkshire mother and concurred with by my Liverpool mother-in-law. I make a thinner pancake by using more liquid (but just a pinch of salt), and cook with a tiny amount of lard rather than butter. When the fat is smoking hot I swirl it round to cover the pan and then add the mix with a slower but similar motion. It's thin, so I'm a turner! I eat mine hot out of the pan with syrup, without rolling.
Excellent video, thank you very much Steve! I'll be making these for my housemates this evening, and it'll be my first time making them myself, so I needed a bit of last minute swotting up. And of course, I'll be a tosser, it's the most fun way to do it!
Hey Popidge, Great! well I hope they are impressed by your efforts, we tossers are a rare bread ;o) I had these pancakes today and they still put a huge smile on my face. Have a great time. Steve
Sorry I didn't reply earlier I have been on a road trip :) You made me laugh because I often get those bent pancakes too. Your comment is so kind. Really thanks a lot :) Steve
I make a really awesome Christmas Cake. which I didn't get time to do last year. I will do it between now and Christmas, thanks for reminding me :o) Steve
Hey Nathan :) I am sure this would work just fine with a Canola Based Spread or a Dairy Free Flora or similar, give it a try and I hope they taste great for you :) Steve
you made my mouth water when you cut into the ready to eat pancake towards the end. . such a tease
I'm a tosser... my mum was born in England and I used to make a whole pile many a Sunday evening... Lemon & cinnamon sugar are my favourite. Thanks Steve. :-)
Thanks Philippa, I miss these pancakes, I can't wait for Shrove Tuesday :o)

Indeed so many memories, I used to do this in Bristol when I was on primary school, the same sugar lemon and roll!
Tsai Joy I am happy to have re kindled those memories, Cheers
Steve

Yes you do, but if you want those English Pancake memories, ditch the crepes.. LOL Cheers MArk
A friend from Birmingham taught me it was sugar and Lime Juice and I like butter with it as well.
Thanks to Steve I now know how to make a traditional English pancake! Absolutely delicious thanks Steve

Absolutely delicious they are too!
Thank you 😋
Great recipe, that’s how I make them but I use golden syrup, a thin layer spread all over then roll them….try it, delicious

Ohhh! Heavenly, I'm a Yorkshire descendant my self so I can appreciate the use of Lard, a much maligned ingredient. Thanks for the tip :o)
Steve
