- Towards the end of the year an elephant family led by iconic matriarch
"Wonky Tusk" walks through the reception of Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia's
South Luangwa National Park to feed on the fruits of a massive Wild
Mango tree that grows in the lodge grounds. Normally spending up to an
hour feeding on the fruits that have fallen to the ground, they may
come back several times during day to catch the next harvest.
On this particular day last December they spent 4.5 hours around the
tree first hoovering up all the green fruits and pips left over by the
baboons and then, maybe worn out from all the activity, simply lay down
to sleep with Wonky and another female watching over them.

It is so clear that these wonderful animals feel completely safe at the. Lodge . Where else can they feel
so relaxed and safe from harm ? They have learned that not all humans are cruel . Wonderful .

I can't even describe the warmed going through my heart. Watching these girls fall sleep all together right in the middle of garden. What kind of monsters some humans to go there kill these beauties for their head, ivory, and for what. Isn't this much more satisfying and thrilling?
I want2 get there 2 picnic w/ them. They did recognize the building as being FRAGILE. I WANT TO GET there 1 day. I thought elephantDID NOT LAY down. I am impressed with the footage of this WONDERFUL video. It shows elephants overload. I was happy 2 c a baby suckel4OVER 2minutes near the end.
The mangoes look so tiny on the ground when the elephants stand next to them! They look like grapes. LOL. Beautiful and captivating!
they are so amzingly careful and dainty when taking on the steps and the slippery floors of the lodge...what wonderul animals.

They have realized it's the perfect protected boma for resting the young ones in the heat of the day.

The most interesting part is where they lay down to sleep. Outside the lodge they wouldn't dare to do that. It shows that the know they're completely safe.

I love watching this and the elephants seem to be very calm and trusting of the humans at the lodge. Have there been any altercations between the elephants with the guests or staff?

Yes she is alive and well and visited the lodge a few days ago - a little early for the wild mango fruits but maybe she was making a recce. We are leading a safari there next November specifically to see her and her family.

Next time when they are on a picnic please feed them a buffet lunch consisting of clean sugar cane,Jack fruit,water and whatever they like.
Did the hotel built around those existing fruit trees that the elephants accustomed to? Or the elephants found out about the fruit trees that the hotel planted?
The hotel was built over an ancient elephant path, and the elephants made it clear they weren't changing the path, so now whenever the trees start sprouting their fruit the elephant herd just walks through the reception to the trees like nothings happening.

They are, probably, fermented fruits, and they could be drunk from it. Lol! You should plant thousands of Marula trees, aroun your place. Please, do it!
