It's even better to buy chests in the tower than in your example, because the true cost is 150 gems, given that you have a 50/50 chance of getting the item chest by only opening one chest compared to two.
@Charles: You forgot 2 important things: 1) You might get your items in 1 purchase in the tower, not 2. And also, if you do need to open 2 extra chests, you get 200k gold in addition to your items. So you'd need to also weigh that vs. the extra items you get from missions via purchasing energy.
That is a little shortsighted. If someone really has to decide: "Use I 400 Emeralds on Energy or do I split to 200 Emeralds for Energy and 200 Emerals for Tower?", than it is a very bad decision. Because when you make 400 Emeralds on Energy you get also the "1750 Guild-Point-Reward" rewarding you with enchantment Runes (worth 500 Emeralds). And the more Guild-Points you make, the easier your Guild gets the higher Guild-Rewards like the 45k-Reward, which gives you another 6 great enchantment Runes (worth 600 Emeralds). So if many members of an average Guild who gets the 45k-Reward, would really change from spending 400-600 Emeralds on Energy to spending more on Tower, they would loose a lot of rewards. (Not so say, that on special Events you get also rewards for spending Energy, which would than also decrease. And most events rewards you for spending Energy 🙂 First make sure you get your 1750 GP-Reward and your Guild gets enough Guildpoints for higher rewards, than make sure how many energy you want to spend for the actual special Event if you want to get this rewards. And when you than still have Emeralds left to spend, than this Emeralds are better spend for Tower..... But at this point you are already one of the Players who can say: "I don´t care how much emeralds I spend because I´m rich, bitch!" 🙂
And one additional point: You made your math with farming for only one equipment. But if you are smart, you always take a location where you can get at least 2 items you need. And then you get double reward. The item you actually need and the item you need later for that hero or another hero that you are working on.

Can you also do an analysis on whether to use emeralds on energy to farm or using rarity fair. I made some calculations but would like someone to confirm because it is against the some common belief that I heard. Thanks!
you allso only get 3-4 item for the lower cost chest so its about the same...
There are many items you should NEVER buy in the Tower because get them farming for other stuff anyway. But to blanket say you should not buy red items is not necessarily true - for 50 Emerald chest you get about the same value as the Rarity shop. Here is the summary of the research:
50 Emerald Chests:
*IF* you get gold for the free open *THEN* the expected value of paying to open the chest is just below the value the same emeralds you would get spending them at the Rarity Shop.
*IF* you get Tower Coins for the free open *THEN* the expected value of paying to open the chest is only about 65% of the same emerald value at the Rarity Shop - so spend at the emerald shop instead.
100 Emerald Chests:
It is *NEVER* a higher expected value in opening any chests - spending emeralds at the Rarity Shop always has a higher expected value.
The difference between the two is for 50 Emerald chests you get a 75% chance of 3 items and a 25% chance of 4 items, however, the payout is less for 100 Emerald chests since you have a 75% chance of getting 6 items and a 25% chance of getting only *7* items. Bottom line: take a chance if you like the item if you get gold on the free open on 50 Emerald chests.
Now, if you disregard my advice and pay to open a chest when the free open chest contains Tower Coins, and you then get gold in that chest, it is *ALWAYS* an above Rarity Shop expected value to pay to open the 3rd chest.
My expected values assume:
- A fragment has a 20 emerald value at the Rarity Shop (this is the most common value assessment)
- Tower coins have a value of 5 fragments * 20 emeralds/fragment / (820 Tower Coins/fragment) = 0.122 emerald/Tower Coin.
- Gold has no Emerald value
- If you get gold on the 2nd chest you open (that is, the 1st pay emeralds chest) then you will always pay to open the 3rd chest.
Also, you should always Raid 10 - Raid 10 gives a 100% chance of getting 1 of every potential loot item (and you may get even more.) Again from extensive testing, you get an average of 2.06 of every potential gold or red item per Raid 10. You should **never** do a raid other than raid 10. If raid is < 10 you may not get any item - the guarantee does not apply. On a raid > 10 you are guaranteed one (1) of each potential loot item - however you may actually get only 1 of those items if you have bad luck. While it is a drag to do Raid10's over and over this is the way to maximize your payout and over the long haul get your 2.06 items/per Raid10.
I can agree with your math, but spending emeralds at events gives you rewards and spending energy also gives you rewards at events. So if you want to maximize your outcome on events, using emeralds to purchase energy and then use that energy..... still a better spending.
You forget to say that it's better to raid 10x because you are guaranted to get the object at least one time.
I've gotten zero from 10x raids lol
some items have a very low rate of getting it.

I don't know about anyone else, but those drop rates on orange items are just straight awful for me. I buy items in the tower probably more than most, but IMO it is definitely worth it and least path to resistance trying to farm forever for them. Is it the most emerald efficient...I couldn't say, but it gives me peace of mind. LOL

As a side note the shops sell 10 yellow or 5 red items too
You can also get them from mysterious island, the big drops can take many moves to get but you can save up your moves and if it is close to another big ticket item then you're good.
Nice summary, Charlie. I only spend emeralds in the tower when I need a few more to reach a reward level for an event and have already spent my 2x50 on energy.
Lower chests don't have 7 fragments. It's higher up chests that do. Other factors are farming too much leads you to increase team level. That might suck as you need violet fragments and yet the tower switches to orange and red stuff before you are really ready. I'm farming violet stuff a lot and wish the tower still gave me violet crap.

I just realized I burned emeralds on tower every day for like 4 months. I spent 500 emeralds on tower per day so stupid. The idea is that you ain't farming the item you need. You're farming other items too, because spend energy offer you choices on multiple stages and one raid gives you other necessary items beside the one you need. Stop spending emeralds on tower now guys you burn emeralds for nothing!
I sometimes just spend the 2100 emeralds on the tower to get everything.
Ive been playing for a while and guys that spend and played on my side asked me what could help them speed the process and clear the tower is something that ive always said them to do. But u need to spend a lot on 4X sale only to be able to clear the tower every single day. Sadly the events no longer give you the "clear the tower" goal so i dont do that anymore since im not a heavy spender. So IMO... dont waste your emeralds on it unless you are a whale.
There're some flaws in your calculations (some people have already mentioned some earlier in the comments so I won't repeat those). First and foremost, do we actually know that it is a 20% drop rate when farming in the campaign? I've never seen the 20% rate you're using. Is that published somewhere or are you just using a random number for an example? (If so, then the calculations are completely useless.) Second, in the lower sections of the tower that cost 50 emeralds, all of the rewards there are half of the higher levels of the tower, including the items. Seven will not drop in the bottom half.
If it's event then Def worth it. But I agree on the orange items.

Drop rates are average sometime you get none
if you have VIP 5 or above and always spend x10 at a time you are always guaranteed at least 1 drop of each. If you are getting nothing, then you need to be patient and wait until you have 100 energy and use the x10 raid feature.
I have 37,000 energy since I am f2p
also the drop rate seems much lower most days and if you get lucky in the tower it is 100 instead of 200
