Perfect. His rivals at this time was an over the hill Del Monaco, and of course his only serious match in this part was Jon Vickers. I saw them both on stage, and can say that I appreciated Vickers' introspection (cracks and all) but I thrilled to McCracken's visceral voice and acting. A great singer, never to be forgotten.
Me too. More than anything I remember McCracken as a great man. Kind, decent, generous, down to earth, and 100 percent committed to the music. There were many things in his career that he had a right to be bitter and angry about- but in the end he let them go and lived with grace and dignity. AND he had a unique and powerful voice, and many fans, despite the critics especially in New York being on his case. Hardly ever a kind word. I really admired him.
@@luvatenor We know what you mean, and what Mr Shore means. It took A NUMBER of singers to fill in the hole left by Warren- Mac Neil, Colzani, Guarerra, and who ever else was around.
I completely agree with Jef Olson. Colzani was magnificent in the dramatic roles. Gerard in Chenier as well, Barnaba, a magnificent Iago, a surprisingly charming Falstaff, excellent as Amonasro, Tonio, Michonnet, a moving Boccanegra. And he was perhaps best known for Scarpia and, especially, Jack Rance.
The whole Gala was issued on a 3-disc pirate set on the MRF label. It was taped off the Old House’s speaker system. You can still find copies floating around on EBay. Even though the program has a few disappointments, there is much legendary singing, including a very exciting Manon Lescaut duet with Tebaldi and Corelli.

Agreed 110%! 🙌 JMcC Perf’d Otello over 560x & was Uniquely suited to ALL of its demands & requirements 🎶🎭
Both great singers. I sang with McCracken and I admired Colzani very much. He took over for Warren.
Sorry, but NO ONE ever took over for Warren, and NEVER will!

Awesome performance! I'd never heard of Colzani before! Very lovely!
Colzani didnt make many records but onstage he was great- very dramatic actor- as Scarpia and Jack Rance. Wow!

By 3-disc, I meant 3-LP. I’ve never seen it on CD.
@@richardholmesmusic2128 After 7 years since I made my comment I have found it 2 years ago complete!
And those poor chumps paying top dollar at the Met to hear today's third-raters.
Amen to that!
